How did you find out Phil in the first place?

I discovered Phil through KF and his fap video, it's been a wild and funny ride to watch since then.

Back when I first discovered LP's were a thing, I wasn't quite sure if I'd like Metal Gear Rising: Revengance. I found the "Super Best Friends Play" channel and they mentioned him twice, first calling him "that retarded guy who can't play video games and he's a let's player", and a second time mocking him during the fight with Monsoon ("Don't make fun of DSP, it's not his fault." "Who's fault is it then?" "His...parents'?")

Someone had linked to EvilAJ's TIHYDP MGS2 in the comments section. Since I had beat the game when I was but a wee child, I didn't figure it could be that bad, since I didn't think anyone could be that inept.

Boy, was I wrong.

TIHYDP dark souls 2. after that i watched all the TIHYDP for the other 2 souls, borne and all their dlcs. then i started going deeper as to why hes like this, u know the constant blaming/excuses/ and just all out childish tantrum, and boi did i hit the mother load. his whole life is a big fkin meme and a pathetic joke, i decided this is one of the most "entertaining" individuals out there, and ill spend my time laughing at his life.

ahh laughter, the most beautiful thing in the world.

i found phil when i realized you could look up people playing vidya on youtube. He was one of the first results and i was really into left 4 dead at the time (didnt have a pc or an xbox to play it back when it was new 2007-2008. i thought he was pretty funny and i kept watching his content up until late 2016- early 2017 (yeah roughly 10 YEARS). near the end of like 2015 i was starting to watch those dang dirty detractors and realized he was a scumbag. the thing that really pushed me over was the whole "ill never do what those other twitch streamers do" and then he proceeded to do shoutouts and have pop ups during gameplay (jose quervo 527 anyone?) at that point i lost all the little respect that i had left and never looked back. then the tax situation happened and it was glorious. it took awhile but snort, tevin, goldentriangle, etc, finally broke the conditioning.

funny enough i only ever gave him money 1 time, a twitch subscription, and it was because i had prime. all other times i had adblahk on because he would have like 4 ads for a 10 min video, it was obnoxious.

I was looking up bad let's plays because I was thinking of getting into streaming/youtube and wanted to see bad let's plays so I wouldn't make the same mistake.

I found Tevin's Let's Endure Metal Gear Solid 2. I then started following Dave through Tevin and branched out into the other detractors before becoming one myself.

This is part of what always got me - how many times DSP would burn a bridge or act like a holier than thou asshole with 'I wouldn't do X unlike those losers!' and then some point in the future he breaks that principle, usually for $$$. Cheers launched in June 2016, shits all over them, 'get a hooker etc.' - happily accepting them within 6 months, reliant on them as serious income within a year. 'I'm not a clown' yet the cringy clowning went into overdrive since Sonic 06's marathon and especially as a 'full time streamer' in March 2017 with near constant facecam. Shitting on Twitch, going as far as ranting for over 10 minutes over the trick2g fake SWATing unban and writing 'good riddance, Twitch' in the description (Hate Live 35, August 6 2015) yet reliant on a detractor to explain OBS Studio to him on his forums when YouTube stream attendance is terrible by November 2016 so he can run back.

On adblocking, considering how many daily videos DSP puts out I would not be surprised if DSP has one of the worst monetized view rates on YouTube. You've got 'detractors' who don't want DSP making money off their views so they run adblockers, and you've got fans who've sat through hundreds, perhaps thousands of 10+ minute videos and eventually had enough, installing an adblocker so they can watch without constant adverts.

As for my own discovery of DSP, I was a regular watcher of retsupurae so I saw their MGS2 video during Retsublitz in February 2013, the later Day in the Life of DSP and even the couple times he was covered on their Retsutalk podcasts. An online friend pointed out TIHYDPs around summer 2013 so I binge watched those starting with Jak 1 as I knew that game. Eventually the YT recommendations linked to other videos like magnew's Bugged X Mechanics clips and 'detractor' DSP Tries It, some point in late 2013 one of these detractor videos of DSP vlogging and being an asshole clicked to me 'Wow, DSP's not just an asshole gamer, he's an asshole in real life' and I fell deeper down the rabbit hole.
Random aside, in late 2012 I read a Polygon article named Phil TV which talked about a Let's Player using a camcorder for new games as a career... as a retsupurae fan I agreed with the SA LP standards of not covering brand new games, only LPing games you knew well & could show off OR games so bad they could be mocked plus expecting direct capture even back in 2008 (a composite USB capture like a Dazzle was dirt cheap even back then) meant I felt this guy was pathetic to earn a living this way... imagine my amusement when years later I realise this is the DSP I'd fallen down the rabbit hole on.

One of the SoK "let's endures" got on my recommended list one day and I watched it wondering what the hell it was. I had never gotten into the "let's play" scene apart from some Dwarf Fortress AARs back in the day, so I was pretty ignorant. Was moderately entertaining seeing Phil fail so I went looking for more kahntent. Eventually realized the juicy laughs came from Phil being a jackass and the laughs from him just being shitty at video games couldn't compare.

Some detractor content is pretty great, though. I do watch Tevin stream from time to time. Pretty chill. I can only watch unedited DSP content with detractor commentary. It's too painful otherwise.

The first place was a video of OnlyAfro about Dark Souls...he used a sample of Phill screaming, i didn't knew about him at this time, after that, i saw some samples of the "This is how you dont play MGS2" in some video, i can't remember the name now...

After that, i found the "Down the Rabbit hole series" knew the summary about our friend Dave, and then Almighty Tevin series... down the hill from there.

I think he got mentioned in a Retsupurae video? I've had a kind of morbid curiosity ever since.

I discovered the whole parkourdude91/DeagleNation thing quite late. I spent a few weeks reading up on him binging a large number of videos trying to figure out if he was fake or not. The 25 push-up video sold me on him being legitimate. I couldn’t fathom someone pissing themselves for the lols. A few weeks later it was revealed it was all a big act after the car accident on his way to streetrace Brianna Wu.

Afterwards, I began to ponder that with all the Let’s Players out there, there had to be one that was the worst. So out of curiousity I looked up “worst let’s player” and lo and behold, I was presented with a number of “Good Idea/Bad Idea” videos. For those who aren’t familiar with the format (and I highly recommend you look for them if they are still available), the video starts with the “Good Idea”, a 30 second clip of a certain section of a game being played correctly. That is followed by the “Bad Idea”, a 30 minute train wreck of Phil fumbling his way around the same segment.

Satisfied with my discovery, I moved on. Later after finding Mister Metokur (then The Internet Aristocrat), I saw the stream where he watches the clip of Phil saying his girlfriend has been in bed sick all day and he has to wake her up to make him dinner. I realized then how much of piece of shit he was. Soon after, I discovered the SoK’s Let’s Endures and watched nearly all of them. The one that got me hooked was the Friend Request Ridicule. It seemed to me that this person did not deserve the success he has had. I also discovered these forums about that time and began lurking for about a year before finally joining. Now I’m just here to sit back and laugh at this garbage fire personified until he finally burns himself out.

I'll go ahead and say Geoff The Hero. He mocked DSP quite a bit back in the day, but AFAIK Phillup never really hated him.

For a long time I had no idea who he was talking about, but eventually I gave in to my curiosity and looked him up. I still regret doing that, even though the Pigroach has (unwillingly) provided me with countless hours of entertainment.

Retsupurae did a video on him years ago, but i didn't make the connection until the This is how you DON'T play videos

I think i first found him through ItsaGundam when he made a Video About Phil loosing the ability to make Money on Youtube after he got fired by Curse. And from there I got curious

I knew about DSP in name from the FGC but the first time I ever watched content related to him was Down The Rabbit Hole's video on him.

After I came to the farms for CWC I saw Pigroach's thread and became interested.

Lurking here. His obvious gambling problem is like a dead parent of mine so detracting is fairly easy for me
Like most people, cwc is what finds the farms.

Long story... I was watching AVGN over a decade ago. Back when he was first getting big. Then there was the "feud" with the Nostalgia Critic. Started watching THWTG stuff. Got into Lordkat. Kept seeing DSP stuff mentioned randomly but never looked into it. Eventually someone on a LK video mentions Metokur. Look into him. See some of his stuff. Watch Metokur and the SOK. Watch some SOK stuff. And then I was interested in Phil.

It's only been about 4 years, but it seems like a lifetime.

In some places, all roads lead to Rome (Italy) . In others... You inevitably wind up at dsp. Somehow, you stumble across this fuckwad in some way shape or form.

It's only when your puzzle pieces connect that you dig deeper and wind up here. One of us. Gooble gobble, one of us.
