How did you find out Phil in the first place?

I was browsing the "Horrible Let's Plays" section of TV Tropes. Saw that some dumbass called the King of Hate had his own section. Saw that there were videos of him being obnoxious and stupid all over Persona 4, a game I had recently enjoyed and beaten myself. I clicked the TIHYDP link...and the rest is history.
(For some real fun, look up "this is how you don't play Pokemon Moon" on YT. This is a game intended for children, and he fails at it so badly...)

It was a few years ago. I was watching cringe videos with my friends and someone linked a DSP video. Then we did a bit of research and he was playing through GTA IV. Laughed at videos that were 1 second long and forgot about him until years later.

I can't remember where I first heard about him, there wasn't one incident I can point to, but DSP was always kind of a bottom benchmark for gaming and content creation in general. He was always used as a counterpoint in discussions - "Spoony's latest video was lame, but not exactly DSP tier yet", that sort of thing. So I've had a general awareness of DSP as a phenomenon for many years now. DSP was only ever mentioned in discussions about the absolute worst of the burgeoning Youtube culture at the time. I never really thought anything more of him than that, and I never had any desire to search him out as frankly the concept of Let's Playing bores me to tears, so the idea of someone doing something I already hated abnormally badly wasn't something I fancied.

Then I saw THAT unboxing video. You know the one I mean. And it was, and still is, one of the most perfect comedy videos I'd ever seen on Youtube. I'd always just kind of dismissed DSP as someone who was simply dumb, and there's no shortage of dumb people on Youtube, but this was something else. The fucking idea of someone unboxing a vanilla standard edition of a mediocre game is kinda funny on its own, then you add in the fact that he never unboxes the game anyway because he's too busy BITCHING ABOUT THE FAULTY FIRE ALARM THAT IS GOING OFF IN THE BACKGROUND FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE VIDEO, and you have comedy gold, son. I still crease up to this day just thinking about it. It's a perfect storm of greed, colossal stupidity and an utter lack of any kind of standards that I'd never seen before. It's just too fucking funny. Then when I look into the guy properly for the first time, and I see he styles himself as an honest, down-to-earth, serious gamer and a pioneer, I was fucking sold.

Hold on I never saw this. Is that unboxing video still up ?

Ok that was so insanely funny for a video. So he spent 15 minutes discussing his fire alarm and never opened the game up. That is pure comedy.

I remember playing the original Darksiders on ps3 just after release.
I got stuck on something and went to YouTube for solutions.
Let's just say I didn't find them over at dear 'ol Philliam, but I found his complete ineptitude at the game fascinating.
Nothing that kept me watching, but still fascinating.
Flash forward a couple of years and I hear about TIHYDP and look it up, and recognized my old buddy!

Friend told me about him while we were slacking off on an English Project we were supposed to be working on

Early in 2010 when I was looking for Arkham Asylum gameplay I found his playthrough (back when YouTube had good search algorithms *SNORT*).

At the time I found him appealing and entertaining enough to subscribe. I have been following his antics ever since. Early on he had done some good playthroughs, I was a big fan of Rambo, anything with him was always good. Their co-ops videos were always great and I really liked Smark Guys. You could tell in DSP's first few years he did genuinely enjoy what he was doing.

I did always know he was a bit of a dumbass (see any of his playthroughs) and an asshole (see Friend Request Ridicule) but he hadn't yet become the insufferable, greedy, salty, scamming prick he is today. I think the moment I fully turned on him was when he lied and scammed people out of the return of Project 7 after enough money had been donated to make it happen.

Today I still find him entertaining to follow, but just because of the absolute train-wreck he has become. He's totally a shell of himself, he's miserable, delusional, stubborn, a liar, a scammer and a loner who's ruined his relationship with his friends and family when he moved across the country.

He's just insanely fascinating to me, for all the wrong reasons.

I actually managed to avoid knowing about Phil up until the past few months. I would always see mentions of him here and there, especially on Encyclopedia Dramatica. But I never actually looked into him to see why he was such a notorious lolcow.

Then one day someone pointed me to that excellent "Down the Rabbit Hole" video that was done on him. From there on I just started watching the parody "DSP Tries It" videos and the "This is how you don't play" videos.

One holiday I accidentally left my laptop at my mom's house and when I came back I found out my little brother had been using it. I was looking through the history and sprinkled among the links to really autistic porn drawings and MLP spergery, I found a bunch of clicked videos and message boards relating to DSP/"The King of Hate", whom I had then never heard of. The first link I clicked was to a diatribe he typed up about how watching his videos or visiting his website with adblock turned on made you a literal thief that he would ban forever when he found you.

If I'm not mistaken, a very well known TIHYDP of Metal Gear Solid 3 catched my attention. And then the next TIHYDP. And the next. This rollercoaster will never stop. This was years ago and Phil never managed to give me the impression he is something else than he is portrayed by his "detractors".
And I'm a fair and honest person - I really am, okay? *snort* So I tried to watch some of his videos and it was mostly impossible. Plain and simple boring garbage (even a blind chicken finds a corn, so yes, there are extremely rare instances where he is funny).

I have no problem when someone plays terrible, but a really big problem if this person plays terrible AND has a horrible personality. Phil is, with every fiber of his mind, the exact opposite of a guy who should be an entertainer. And a splendid example for any good entertainer: Never ever be a Phil, only villains do that.

This was kinda important for me because I was a "Lets Player" myself and I love to learn from other peoples mistakes. So I watched some detractor content from time to time and I must honestly say: It sorta helped me to get a real job. People like MrLewdacris, Tevin and White Tevin Theo spoke some really hard truth: This can't be the rest of your life.

The crazy part is that I watch MUCH more detractor videos since then. I read Phil's lolcow-forum every single day (you make my day, guys and gurls). I think because I was in a slightly similar position like Phil and see his problems without pink glasses even better. So much what he does makes so much more sense, even so it's not an excuse for him.

Anyone who ever did that, I would turn on AdBlock even if I didn't already have it on because fuck that guy.

I think my first DSP video was the Black Mesa playthrough where he spent nearly a half hour being too stupid to figure out how to crouch-jump even though he had previously played the original Half-Life and it's an integral mechanic.

I was looking up speed runs of MGS 2 at the time & a vid of TIHYDP of MGS2 popped up. Unsure what the title meant, i clicked it. From then on i was subjected to the snorts, ineptitude, lack of basic skills & comprehension & i sat there shocked at what i was seeing.

I ended up searching more TIHYDP's & i followed the yellow brick road to here

I heard about him from someone who mentioned the DSP wank stream (No, I didn't watch it, but I did laugh my ass off at what I was told).

For some stupid reason I bought the Thor movie video game. I got stuck on one part and searched YouTube for a walkthrough and found Phil's playthrough of the game.

I have a recollection of seeing a clipreel of him bumbling through GTA and being transfixed. I forgot about it but it stuck with me and a few years down the line I had the thought to poke into a fleeting memory of a fat baby yelling at a CRT television on a poorly rigged webcam and discovering that the same guy accidentally jerked off on a livestream and had a fake escort catfish and now has a hostage girlfriend or something. The golden lolcows seem to really make a lasting impression.
