How do you fight depression? - Let's help each other

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Talking and spending time with other people, specifically people who I share a lot in common with. As lame as it sounds, I try to involve myself with as many groups/activities as possible. I try and volunteer wherever possible, which takes me out and away from my own concerns, and refocuses my energy towards helping other people. I also participate in a few MMA classes, and a simple group for men that goes for walks once a month or so with no real agenda in mind.

Listen and focus on other people, as much as you're able to. Depression is a selfish instinct, in the purist definition of the word, so you can change a lot by simply taking your focus away from your own life and towards that of supporting others. A rising tide lifts all ships, and all that.

I developed a new positive coping mechanism with the goal to make others smile, by drawing fanart; even the MENTAL IMAGE dissolves the depression. When drawing, I internally cackle and I feel happy during the drawing/coloring process.
I should add, it's more creatively fulfilling than hate art.
My Red Eared Sliders also make me happy; once I was depressed in front of my male Red Eared Slider and he was intensely staring at me: "Why are you depressed, when you have ME?!"
Talking to relatives; playing the keyboard (it also goes together when I play for relatives on FaceTime). I have to return to playing "Mr. McGill"
Character designs are a close one.

Ah, I found a YouTube short: After jotting down an affirmation: write your name under it and apply it.

do drugs.
Weed, LSD?
Does snorting mountains of coke help? This is for my morbid curiosity.

Fun facts: Avocadoes help against depression, no matter the species or where it comes from. Spinach, kale and leafy greens help with brain health. Apples help fight depression!

Recipe Smoothie:
Pineapple chunks
Ice Cubes
2 Cups of Almond milk
Chopped Avocadoes (I don't remember the proportions; but I highly recommend it for the mornings as Avocadoes/Pineapples Are heavy to your digestive systems)

tried all of this lol, but fr if you unironically want to do a drug that helps with it: mushrooms and LSD are the best
MDMA (molly) works too due to that afterglow , but thats more of a quick shorter lasting fix than a long term one
Do I twerk whilst taking Molly is in order to kill two birds with one stone? For optimal brain health, DJ Tiesto's "killing me inside" is recommended, or is it a step too far? (The lyrics are about a high guy, from my memory)
Other Electronic Subgenre I enjoy is Happy Hardcore.

ive dealt with depression for ten years. what i did to finally get it under control is to change my habits:
  • lifting weights. this helped me a lot. a session of weight lifting drastically uplifts my mood.
  • making sure to stay hydrated. avoiding most things which arnt just water.
  • taking my vitamins everyday. making sure to take plenty of the D, but also including zinc.
  • taking time to get away from computer and tv screens. doing something during the day which doesnt involve passively consuming media/vidya.
  • reducing porn and jerking off. if you watch a lot of porn you will be surprised at how much it really does affect your mood.
  • reducing consumption of junk food and processed sugars.
  • stopped drinking booze. a lot of depressed people fall into the trap of trying ot drink their depression away but from what ive seen it doesnt help and can make it worse.
im not saying my regiment is 100% super based in sicence, and maybe some of these steps are not 100% necessary, but this is the regiment that i took and it has so far helped me keep it under control.

All of these ARE scientifically recommended. I wish I could drown your post with the agree buttons. You've reminded me of the weights I have: a pair of baby 5 lb dumbbells, baby 5 lb kegel weight, a 10 lb dumbbells somewhere; the elastic bands. But sometimes I wanna mix it up with a large can for weights. 🏋️‍♂️

Another tangent: this is the positive coping mechanism drawing: Another fun fact: Creating helps your brain to be happy: 20230216_174539.jpg

With the strength of a thousand retards.

Seriously though, most of my life I kept shit bottled up...and paid for it down the road. Now I find it helpful to bitch and moan a bit... yeah, you might come off as a whiny faggot to others, but you'd be suprised what a well placed rant can do to improve your mental health.

Therapy is the only thing that really helped me. It ended up turning out that the depression was symptomatic of a larger issue that no one ever figured out so once we honed in on that, most of the bad stuff started fading away. Finding a good therapist is like navigating a mine field, but the right one makes all the difference.

As somebody that was in a very dark place for years, I'll tell you guys what worked for me.

Go sober, stop drinking and popping pills or whatever it is you do to find comfort. Its actually making you even more miserable. You aren't Ethan Ralph, put down the bottle and throw away whatever drugs you are taking.

Start taking vitamins. I personally take 1 a day mens and 5000 ius of vitamin D. I dont believe that mental illness is just a hormonal imbalance. But if you aren't giving your body what it needs, then its not going to function right and you are going to feel like shit.

Start working out. Even after going entirely sober and taking vitamins I am still a very paranoid person. I always have been. It runs in the family I think, There are several generations of people that have all been diagnosed with anxiety disorders. But when I work out I stop feeling anxious and paranoid. Its hard at first, but if you start off with easy short work outs and you do it consistently. Then before you know it, you'll be doing hour long weight lifting sessions and feeling genuinely happy afterwards.

If you feel like going to the gym would be a struggle because of insecurity or depression, buy a kettle bell and research what workouts to do with that. I fucking hate leaving my house and going to a gym full of a bunch of normies and annoying pop music, so I just work out in my back yard with the kettle bell.

You don't can't really escape it. Sometimes you can give yourself a moment of genuine happiness by gaslighting yourself into thinking things will be okay, by watching a funny shows, or escaping to a fictional world (tv/shows/vidya/etc). but in the end you step back in to reality and realize how hopeless and pointless everything is. "Touching grass" isn't as effective as people would like to believe. Hell, sometimes "touching grass" just reminds you of how bad things really are because now you are outside alone with your own thoughts with nothing to distract you and nowhere to escape.
