War Hundreds of protesters, some carrying guns in the state Capitol, demonstrate against Michigan's emergency measures

Hundreds of Michigan residents protested outside the state Capitol building in Lansing on Thursday, with some pushing inside while the Legislature was debating an extension of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state of emergency in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Protesters held signs, waved American flags and even carried firearms while some chanted, “Let us in!” and “This is the people’s house, you cannot lock us out,” and others tried to get onto the House floor but were blocked by state police and sergeants-at-arms, according to WDIV-TV, an NBC affiliate in Detroit.

A state police spokesman told NBC News that it is legal in Michigan to carry firearms as long as it is done with lawful intent and the weapon is visible.

The protest, dubbed the "American Patriot Rally," was organized by Michigan United for Liberty to call for the reopening of businesses.

State lawmakers are expected to vote on the 28-day extension of the state of emergency before it expires at midnight.

Whitmer, a Democrat who has faced fierce backlash for her strict stay-at-home mandate, extended that order earlier this month until May 15, but eased some restrictions on public activities as the state's coronavirus cases stabilize. The state, however, still has more than 40,000 cases and is one of the hardest-hit states.

The emergency declaration allows Whitmer to use her emergency powers to use executive orders during a crisis; its extension is separate from the extension of the stay-at-home order.

As the protests moved indoors from the rainy steps of the Capitol, police took the temperatures of those entering the building using a forehead thermometer, according to WOOD-TV, an NBC affiliate in Grand Rapids.

Like the “Operation Gridlock” demonstration on April 15 over Whitmer’s stay-at-home order, many demonstrators appeared to be supporters of President Donald Trump, donning "Make American Great Again" campaign hats, and in one instance, putting on a dance routine by two girls wearing masks that appeared to be Trump and former President Barack Obama.

Republican lawmakers in Michigan, who control both chambers, have signaled that they would like to see the state safely reopen soon and have pushed back against Whitmer’s request for an extension of her emergency declaration.

True, but that doesn't mean they're anymore respectable. They're just the opposite side of the same stupid coin.
I have to keep telling a left leaning friend with anger issues to not actually do it if he gets infected. They're impulsive and scared and lashing out, but likely won't do it because they're not a complete fuckwit, just scared and misdirecting frustration.

Anyway Rem Lezar/Quxiotic Man is right (as usual, never not believe) and I'm hoping this ends peacefully or at least with not too much fanfare considering that even the rest of the michigan government thinks the governor's gone too far.

It would be hilarious if one of the protestors was someone with COVID in disguise who snuck into the group just to infect them all.

One can only pray.

I don't see any Confederate flags at this protest. Bit of an oversight that, if you're going to have angry white guys with guns you need the Confederate flag too.

It finally occurred to them that they live in a Northern state.

Yeah but they have their uses, I for one am glad they're not taking it sitting down. Call them whatever you will but I'd be pissed too if my governor was acting like this.

Don't worry, they'll shoop those in along with some swastika banners. Unite the Right Part II is only a Snapchat filter away!

I agree this is extreme protesting but damn if Governor Whitmer didnt push their buttons all the way down.

Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. I'm not keen on the method but at this point I'm not blaming them one bit.

But to give them credit, edgy numbnuts tried to use that as a threat.

It's funny, yes, there were allegations of certain groups looking to obtain the virus for similar uses. Wouldn't surprise me but even ISIS is avoiding Europe for the time being because of it. Oh the irony.

Come on, lefties aren't smart enough to come up with shit like that.
It's entirely likely some of these people got covid and will end up with cold or flu-like symptoms for a few days. Every new study coming out has been showing that this thing is much more widespread and therefore less deadly than previously thought. Yeah it kills the obese, terminally ill, and very old, but the chance it kills a healthy person is quite low. I think NY was at something like a .5% death rate based on their antibody studies with something like 1/5 having already caught it.

because asking for the government to stop telling your employer that you absolutely cannot come in is even comparable to any of the requests occupy wallstreeters were making.

"Say no to capitalism! Free stuff NOW"
-media praises these brave demonstrators for exercising their right to assembly

"Open things up we want our jobs back so the economy doesn't die and we can afford food!"
-media shits on them and smears them endlessly

Also, I have this theory that it's the political class (who are almost all over 65) punishing us because the virus poses a greater threat to them than anyone else. It is the Boomer Remover, after all.

That's not what I was referring to.

What I meant was that they're both protesting in really stupid ways. Yeah, these guys are protesting an actual problem, but that doesn't mean they don't look like absolute idiots in the way they're doing it.

I'm of the opinion that most protests look silly, so it might as well be something the people like to do. Quite frankly, normal people typically have something better to do. What you're protesting for, so long as you are peaceful, is what speaks to me. I don't think it's fair to compare militia larpers asking for reasonable things to communist larpers asking for unreasonable things.

This incident has made #whiteprivilege trend on Twitter, because of course it did.

They seem to be upset that the idiot larpers and the police didn't have a shoot out with each other.

Lol, when you search for images of the protest, the first suggestion Google gives you is "confederate flags":

When you click it, the only images that actually contain confederate flags are related to other stories and there don't appear to have even been any at this thing. There are news stories claiming there were some, but I haven't seen them yet, maybe I've missed them.

I did find this chick who can't draw a swastika right, though:

C'mon girl, you can do better than that.

I'm of the opinion that protests don't work as well as some people might think. Especially when people are trying to get to work and you have idiots blocking the streets and shit. "But dey wypipo who have gunz REEEE" is the going narrative and it detracts from the original point of the protests in the first place.

Nah, that's just the Finnish swastika, which has nothing to do with Nazism. Or it's a lefty plant trying to make the protesters look like clowns. Seatbelts on a sofa, people.

Besides, there's nothing that photoshop can't do, the difference is that people put Hitler mustaches on Bill de Fuhrer as a joke. Leftists don't understand the concept of humor, because jokes under communism aren't funny unless everybody gets them.

I don't get why people are so mad about that woman. Yeah it's extremely cringe to call all of your political enemies NAZIs but literally everyone in the mainstream is doing it all the time. Her pun is worth a chuckle, and it's obvious she's saying Witmer is like a NAZI and is therefore bad.

See above comment. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills or something here. Why don't people get this?

Well, I'm sorry but it's just not sexy enough without Confederate flags. Fake Vikings with plaited beards and weird incels in face masks don't do it for me. Completely lame.

I want angry southern men in white sheets shouting about Dixie.

True, they do have a much better goal than the Occupy Wall Street fuckheads had, and they do have the right to wear what they want, but that doesn't absolve them of criticism, nor mean that they're not acting stupid just like them.

I do agree with what these guys are protesting, but they're just ruining their own cause by acting like such speds. They're just giving more ammo to the people who want this lockdown to continue.
