as likely as a good historical title. they will probably shit out a few more dlcs and then make total war: middle earth or some other fantasy game.
I wouldn't put it past CA to make a TW game set in the Rings of Power period. I'd like to know just how much crossover there is between TW fans and Rings of Power "fans".

Its not too much of a gap. all they would have to do is just copy paste total war warhammer gameplay. (single unit cancer and all) slap a LOTR skin on it. and it would make a good penny. More then how much TW Pharaoh would make.

The only big game studio that I pay attention to now is FromSoftware. Because at least with them I am guaranteed quality for what I pay for. Otherwise I get dead trends, bad consumer practices and globo homo politics on my vidya games from other big game studios or publishers.
Larian is good, CdProjeck too, if you pretend 'release' is the start of early access.
Cannot emphasise how CA are basically kings of this very particular type of niche RTS historical/fantasy game that almost no one else produces with a loyal fanbase, and instead fuck that, let's make the most generic shooter and strike after the iron has gone cold.
100%! They are killing their golden goose. The doubled the price of their latest DLC and very few people bought it. How much would it cost them to actually assign more than a skeleton crew to keep their one cashcow working.

like one shop I contracted for was using a failed Java competitor from the 90s
Modula-3?
Can we stop this "Sonic 06 le bad" meme? The game was UNFINISHED, not bad at it's foundations.
Nah it was really bad, abysmal, the setting itself with the human girlfriend was concentrated cringe.

Perhaps there is a chance either a LOTR game or something based off of a Dungeons & Dragons setting is in the cards.

You'd be fucking disappointed. It's top level rich people who don't give a shit about video games talking business strategy and what's hot, then probably a fruitcake or two with marketing slides.

Then once the fruitcake shows overwatch and apex legends numbers to people who have never picked up a controller in their lives, the suits nod, the fruitcake goes back to the studio, and then the faggots at the studio dilate together.

That's how it always goes. Enter board room, show slides of popular thing's success, suits see big number good, retard walks out with approval. World of Warcraft's success is probably responsible for literally billions of burned dollars at this point.
I think it would still work with proper laugh track.

MFs really defending a game where they confirmed sonic has sex with human women. Not only is that bestiality, it’s extremely alienating from his core audience of gigaautists

They picked the title because hyenas look goofy and "quirky", not because of the way they fuck. The average person doesn't know or care how hyenas reproduce. (And judging from how often you post in Animal Control, you don't seem like the average person.)
They picked "Hyenas" based on the assumption that they're scavenging animals, which fits the game's premise of a bunch of retards scavenging the Earth's remains for funko pops.

However, that is incorrect, because hyenas are not fucking scavenging animals.

Also "Join the pack" is retarded because a group of hyenas is called a crackle, or clan.

I guess the one thing they got right about Hyenas is that those clans are lead by females with pseudo penises. If anything the tranny fits right in.

I hadn't been tracking Hyenas in the first place, but after seeing that cast of playable characters it isn't any surprise that it imploded. Who the hell is that game for?

You wouldn't believe the amount of critical infrastructure that's running on 60's tech that barely anyone still alive knows how to maintain let alone build again. This stuff is ancient but its reliable, almost bulletproof, and it was a huge investment which means it would take a similar if not bigger investment to replace with a more modern but unproven version so its left alone, "not broken, don't fix it".

One particular case I know is of a major industrial facility (wont powerlevel) that needed to fix systems that were written in FORTRAN which is even older than COBOL. The only guy still alive who had the knowledge to fix that had been retired for nearly 30 years, they sent company reps to find him camping near a lake only for him to tell them "I'm done with that", I shit you not its like something out of an action movie when they go looking for the hero except the guy was a literal pocket protector-wearing square glasses nerd from the space age.
US medical industry is close to this. Lots of initiatives to try to get it modernized but migrations can be difficult depending on the setup.

Modern payments processors and databases storing sensitive info is often held together with duct tape too, with many parts in the chain that often break, delaying charges. Its crazy how many critical systems are like this today.

Some of it is companies not wanting to cross train or spend money on updating, but a lot of it is just is it worth the lift to move to new tech? That new tech isn't time tested like old infrastructure is. Lots might be abstracted out so its simpler but that doesn't always translate to being more reliable. Even AWS with its uptime claims has massive outages a few times a year, doing their best to obfuscate and hide the scope of issues to keep their promised SLA's. Modern infrastructure is built on the idea that failure is inevitable and everything should be built to be ephemeral and fail/be replaced quick. Works for web apps and game servers but doesn't translate well in other areas unless you put the effort in.

As much as modern muhcloud/app autists seethe COBOL is still better because that ancient tech its practically bulletproof, why? because it was made at a time when you couldn't make mistake, when coders had to program on fucking pen&paper because computers cost more than your life, then carefully move that to punch card or tape and fucking pray that it would compile because there was a long line to use the time-share mainframe and you didn't get to redo, back to end of the line you go.

So basically shit had-to-work, there were no IDEs holding your hand let alone modern AI-assisted coding that basically wipes your ass for you. That's why these systems are so reliable, why COBOL is so reliable, why all these companies keep these dinosaurs going because its better to virtualize a mainframe and scale it with modern servers than its to move 60 years worth of code and design to a new language that might not even be supported for long because ADHD codemonkeys jump into whatever new language+framework that shows up.

like one shop I contracted for was using a failed Java competitor from the 90s for their revenue management.
Modula-3?
I'm going to hazard a guess here. Was it some horrible dialect of COBOL? A sub-SAP abomination? Changed names multiple times to try and stay relevant? Made tons of fake articles to try and shit on Java?
Is it OpenEdge?

How bad does a game need to do in closed beta to get the plug pulled?

Like, I thought playable betas were just marketing stunts now a days where the game was 99% done already.

Even Lawbreakers/Avengers/that one with the jetpacks/etc got released. It seems almost cheaper to just release the bad game when you already have it done. Is it a tax write off like the Batgirl movie?

Sure it was gonna fail but they could have made at least a FEW sales, surely.

It's not about money necessarily, mass layoffs will recoup losses. It's a matter of reputations and concern for the stability of sales of future products.
Maybe even some of the narrow-eyed overlords got their eyes widened by WHAT was created for this time and this money.
