It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

The best part? The lone female member of the band, Doris Melton, is responsible for the anti-feminist comments.
maybe she needs to shut up and stay in the kitchen and let all the feminist men do all the talking

The great Sultan Erdogan has announced his latest plan to bring Turkey more in line with the teachings of the religion of peace.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to “chop off the heads” of traitors during a speech in Istanbul commemorating the victims of last year’s botched coup attempt and celebrating the government’s victory.
“First of all, we will chop off the heads of those traitors,” the Turkish leaders said, addressing tens of thousands of people in Istanbul on Saturday evening, as cited by AFP.

All suspects who are currently being tried for involvement in the 2016 failed coup should wear uniforms similar to those worn by prisoners in the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison, he said.

“I spoke to the prime minister and... when they appear in court, let’s make them appear in uniform suits like in Guantanamo,” Erdogan said.

His statement came after one of the detainees reportedly showed up to court wearing a T-shirt with ‘Hero’ written on it.

Speaking in front of the presidential palace in Ankara later on Sunday morning, Erdogan promised to sign any legislation passed by parliament to restore capital punishment in the country.

“We are a state governed by rule of law. If it comes to me after parliament, I will sign it,” he said.

Meanwhile, European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned Ankara against reintroducing the death penalty.

“One year after the attempted coup, Europe’s hand remains outstretched,” Juncker said in an interview to Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper. “If Turkey were to introduce the death penalty, the Turkish government would finally slam the door to EU membership.”

More than 240 people were killed and over 2,000 injured in the failed coup attempt in summer 2016, according to official data.
Following the failed coup, Ankara launched a massive crackdown on alleged coup supporters, as well as opposition figures and journalists. Over 50,000 people were arrested and more than 150,000 civil servants, police officers, and soldiers dismissed as a reult.

It is still unknown if Erdogan will be merciful to the treacherous democracy loving Gulenists and bring in an experienced headsman from the caliphate of the Islamic State.

The new Doctor is a woman: http://variety.com/2017/tv/global/bbc-doctor-who-1202496884/

Jodie Whittaker will be the 13th Doctor in “Doctor Who” and the first woman in the role after the BBCnamed her Sunday as the new time lord, one of the world’s most iconic sci-fi characters on television.

“Attack the Block” and “Broadchurch” star Whittaker will be seen on BBC One in the U.K. and on BBC America in the U.S., as well as globally, with the long-running sci-fi series still one of BBC Worldwide’s biggest-selling shows internationally.

“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey, with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet,” Whittaker said. “It’s more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”

The new Doctor was revealed in an interstitial after the climax of the Wimbledon men’s tennis finals on BBC One and on the official “Doctor Who” Twitter feed. The Doctor has taken female form before, as ‘Missy’ (Michelle Gomez), and was very briefly played by Joanna Lumley as part of a series of regenerations in a single episode, but Whittaker will be the first Doctor to be played by a woman for a whole series.

I used to watch the old episodes on PBS as a kid. But I could not get into the newer ones at all. I did get some mild amusement out of the newbs who got butthurt when the Doctors changed because they didn't know how the series worked in the first place. I didn't know Joanna Lumley played a regenerated doctor in a cameo role. I probably would have watched it for her. But I don't keep up with the show.

But this will be the first time the Doctor is played by a female as the title role for the season. I'm wondering if the fact that Jodie Whittaker is attractive, thin and white will draw some ire from the crazier members of one of the worst fandoms in existence. Plus this will just fuel the fire for more of that female Link nonsense by proxy.

I guess it's perfectly plausible for the Doctor to be male or female. I'm actually more surprised that they didn't go with black first since the BBC loves diversity so much.

apparently you can get a little plastic Deray now.

According to Business Insider, station KBOI posted a tweet (see below) on Friday night that used a photo McKesson during a July 2016 BLM protest in Baton Rouge.

The photo was accompanied by the headline: “Would-be robber arrives early at banks to find doors locked.”

Alerted to the picture by his followers, McKesson re-tweeted the story, with the disclaimer, “I haven’t been anywhere near a bank robbery. FYI.”

KBOI apologized in a tweet, wrting, “We messed up. We mistakenly tweeted a photo of @deray with an unrelated story link about a bank robbery. We at KBOI are very sorry.”

LONDON -- A British woman has been jailed for six and a half years for tricking her friend into believing she was a man and repeatedly sexually assaulting her with a prosthetic penis.

CBS News partner network BBC News reports that Gayle Newland, 27, was handed the sentence on Thursday by the Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of three counts of sexual assault in a retrial.

Newland was originally found guilty of the crimes in 2015 and sentenced to eight years in prison, but the ruling was thrown out as the court deemed the judge's remarks in summation to have been unfair and unbalanced.

In reading his sentence on Thursday, Judge David Stockdale remarked that, "truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction," and in this case in particular, "the whole truth here is as surprising as it is profoundly disturbing."

"It is difficult to conceive of a deceit so degrading or so damaging for the victim upon its discovery," the judge said, according to the BBC.

Newland was found guilty of using a fraudulent Facebook account that she had created using photos and videos of an American man to fool her the victim into believing she was a man with romantic interests.

The victim testified that she never suspected, during multiple encounters in 2013 with a person she believed to be a man named Kye Fortune, that she was actually engaged in sexual acts with another woman, because she always wore a mask.

She only learned the truth, she told the court, when she removed the mask during an encounter in 2013.

"There was no point until the day I took the blindfold off that I thought for one second that a woman was the person behind this," she told the court.

Throughout the trial, Newland denied hiding her real gender and identity, claiming both women were lesbians struggling to come to terms with their sexuality who agreed to meet for role-play.

With a face like this who can blame her for wanting her girlfriend to wear a blindfold.

The guys behind Game of Thrones had the bright idea to create a series called Confederate. The show is about a modern day alternate reality where the Confederacy successfully seceded and slavery still continues. As you can guess this is not going over well at all.

Twitter is none too pleased about HBO's next show from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Confederate will imagine slavery as a modern-day institution in America, exploring an "alternative timeline" if the South successfully seceded from the Union.

The story, said HBO, will follow "a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

The premise is akin to Amazon's Man in a High Castle, which reimagines the world if Hitler had won World War II.

But it's one Daily Beastwriter Ira Madison III called dangerous in a heated era of increased hate crimes. "This is white nonsense...we finally had an Oscars ceremony where a black film won Best Picture (Moonlight) without having slaves or servants in it," he wrote. "But I guess HBO’s eyes are still fixated on 12 Years a Slave."

"It is exhausting to think of how many people at HBO said yes to letting two white men envision modern day slavery. And offensive," tweeted Roxane Gay.

The premise actually seems rather dumb. Wasn't slavery pretty much in its death throws anyway due to the industrial revolution? Stopping secession was not about ending slavery. That was just a bonus side effect. But slavery would have ended anyway. I can see why people are upset over this. It's just that I feel censoring other people's creativity because "muh feelings" is wrong. If Benioff and Weiss want to make a stupid series let them.

I've got to wonder though, what kind of effect would modern day slavery have on working class jobs? The series will probably be too dumb to address this. I would imagine that slavery would just be taking jobs away from poor while folks and would increase unemployment.

And yes, POCs are appalled that POCs are involved in the creation of the show. I've heard a few of them have shut down their Twitters. It's very likely that the backlash is going to kill this show. But some of the criticism is actually being lobbed at the fact that this show is getting made before the Game of Thrones prequel.

Industrialization plus mass immigration of cheap Irish labor made slavery increasingly unprofitable for the small landholders to the point that only the big time planter aristocracy could turn a profit with slave labor due to sheer economies of scale.

During the final moments of the Roman Empire there is no evidence at all of slaves doing manual labor type jobs as they found out it was better to get some Germans to do it willingly. Most slaves were like accountants.

I assume something similar.
