Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus Trailer Released

It was pretty damn good. The only thing missing was a certain degree of heartless black humor and the aforementioned grit. I always liked the grittiness and dirt in the old series, it mirrored the creator's own drawing style and led into the show's aesthetic of run down amusement parks and fast food mascots really well. There was a ruthlessness to it all that I think is noticeably turned down in this new release, for obvious reasons (a whole lot less people dying, for one).

I think Johnen Vasquez's defining work before Zim is worth checking out, too - If you're into tracing the roots of subcultures, things like "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" are pretty much patient zero for certain scenes and later works.

Really liked it, loved how Gaz took more of a role than she did in a lot of the episodes and that her character was tweaked from more of a generic "angry spooky girl" into a more self aware, less embarrassing Dib.

Also Jhonen rankings

Squee > Zim > JTHM >I Feel Sick > I never read the rest of it, I do recall 'Everything can be beaten' being shitty though.

I really liked it a lot. It seems a tiny bit less cynical and a lot less nihilistic than I remember the show being, but by the end that was working for me, especially when they got down to what the story was really about. I hope Vasquez does more animated Zim in the future.

I enjoyed it as well and seeing Dib’s dad kick ass was great.

Vasquez has gotten older and I don’t think he’s married or has kids but he is an uncle and really close with his nieces. It was nice to see that his work retains all the weirdness from before but matured in some ways. I know some edgelords with Daddy issues feel some kind of way about it because the comics went in the same general thematic direction over the years. Those fans need therapy.

I could see it if nick had a more long term deal with netflix after this and static cling if they did well.
them doing a terrestrial cable revival might not be the best business move but I could see Zim doing gangbusters on a streaming service if they could work out a party between the Johna, Nick, and Netflix

FYI, the "darkness" in Zim is a damn meme. Fools act like the whole show was just episodes like Dark Harvest and ignore all the straight wackiness the show had.

I was wondering about that, figured that layer of sentiment in the story was coming from somewhere. How much of the movie came from the comics?

Vasquez intended his show to have SOME pathos. The Membranes in particular were meant to be a legit family for all their many many many flaws, this didn't really come off well in the show which made Dib's father and sister come off as neglectful and abusive respectively.

It was great... but it was surprisingly optimistic, uncharacteristically from what the show usually does. A classic good vs evil tale.

I mean Vaquez is a huge edgelord. Remember the bloody gir he hid? so I did expect it to be way darker. Instead, we got a very happy ending with the irken armada defeated even Membrane and Gaz acting way more loving and human than their cold uncaring counterparts from the show.

But, not a complain, it was fun nonetheless. Just not what I expected.

Was that the result of network interference, do we know?

Almost pure perfection in every respect and I enjoyed it infinitely more than Rocko's lackluster and preachy (but very well animated) revival. Its the kind of revival I appreciate and approve of as it serves as not just a continuation and a fun little experience but as a solid finale. Brings back the cast for one last go, adds more to the story, develops the characters and gives you a true sense of closure and accomplishment, and if you crave more there's always the comics which you can probably consider as taking place at some point in the middle of the film.

A shame the quality of the animation couldn't be more consistent but they were on a budget and there was probably a lot of drama involved, and the different animation styles at the end was gold. Still though, I wish we could've seen the original ending Vazquez intended (which involved Tak, Skoodge and The Resisty), but I'll take this.
9 out of 10 Pudding Cups.

True it was noticeably "brighter", but a few moments and the ending were satisfyingly dark enough for me I guess, especially with the Tallest in Puppet Hell. But yeah, it was definitely a lot less edgier than the original show. I was kind of expecting the clone Membrane to explode at the end, but I like how Membrane and Gaz actually felt more human. Its nice character development.
