It was pretty damn good. The only thing missing was a certain degree of heartless black humor and the aforementioned grit. I always liked the grittiness and dirt in the old series, it mirrored the creator's own drawing style and led into the show's aesthetic of run down amusement parks and fast food mascots really well. There was a ruthlessness to it all that I think is noticeably turned down in this new release, for obvious reasons (a whole lot less people dying, for one).
I think Johnen Vasquez's defining work before Zim is worth checking out, too - If you're into tracing the roots of subcultures, things like "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" are pretty much patient zero for certain scenes and later works.
