My nerdlore is rusty, but didn't he buy a new house around this time?
There is some rumor where he used some of the fundraising money to buy a new house, and the old house was sold in 2015:

I think its because they believe the room has gotten a little smaller I guess?

On one hand, I don't know who would ever dare to recreate the room in its entirety with the exact same ceiling, floor tiles, organization of games, etc., regardless of how loyal James' friends might be. On the other hand, it's always been just a section of his basement, not the entirety of it.

I'm comparing how James stands up straight in the room between this older video and the linked video.

It doesn't look too different, apart from some stuff rearranged for the room's modernization.

In the incredibly rare event this was true, this would make James and friends incredible set designers to have redone that entire room from nothing and have it look 100% like the old one. Sounds like the "Why is he CGIing himself in the basement instead of going down there?" thing from years ago and expanded on.

The spergs at cinemassacretruth are annoying but they got a point.

James got insanely lazy, it's abysmal the difference from the AVGN eras. And yes, all the pics below are from different episodes.
I'd say they cherrypicked certain episodes for this meme. The "camerawork then" stills are from episodes way back when James still lived in his other homes, and those particular episodes have more cinematic elements to them than most later episodes. Not that there have been any episodes since that had heavy, if not brief cinematic elements (e.g. Star Wars, Crazy Castle...), but if you look at a very standard episode even back when James put more effort into the show (e.g. Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, Action 52/Cheetahmen...), they had the same "sitting in front of a couch" shots that are just as present as now.

Speaking of cherry-picking, all of those "vs. now" stills are all episodes from 2020 (going by the shirt he started to wear), which was obviously the peak of the dry spell of his creativity, compared to this year where he seems to be a little more open to adding more cinematic elements to episodes (to varying degrees of success, see Fear and Loathing in Vegas Stakes, half of it is very gimmicky and not good, and Darkman, which had that little homage to the film it was based on, and that was great).

I honestly don't see what's wrong with him just reviewing games even with someone else writing the episodes; As he said in this video, he preferred to make less episodes that were "minimovies" and more episodes that were just simply reviews.

Absolutely. And it starts from the premise that a show about video games necessarily must always have elaborate skits in the first place. But if you want newer eps which aren't just James on a couch, there's the Las Vegas one, the Halloween one that was all one continuous shot, the Sega Activator one, and the Polybius one. You can cherry-pick in the other direction too.

I think the problem based on the image is more towards how the recent AVGN episodes usually just star him sitting on a couch and that's it, which do give the impression that the production is really lazy if you consider the fact that Screenwave does the work for him (playing and recording the game, writing the script for him, and all James needs to do is voice the lines and record himself in front of the camera without changing anything, and giving feedback for the script), even then it's kind of a dumb nitpick. My problems with recent AVGN episodes have nothing to do with the camerawork, but rather the charm. For instance, the Shrek episode and Las Vegas one which are received rather poorly do involve him away from the couch but the episodes themselves mostly involve stupid skits and less reviews. It's really a lose-lose situation.

Oh yeah and TheCinemassacreTruth subreddit is sperging real hard on this:

Someone on the Reddit dug up this blog post from Cinemassacre from 2005. I don't know if this is serious or not...

Not too surprised to see James simping for VHS even around the time they were going out of style. He always seemed to believe VHS was vastly superior to DVD.

Once again, that subreddit proves itself to be full of A-logs. It's a fun, silly post about a nostalgic media format. Who cares? What is there to chug Haterade about? For fuck's sake.

Another episode.
On one hand, its good to hear him discuss some obscure promo material for video games that he watched as a kid. On the other hand, this should have been done by anyone that isn't the AVGN; there's just not much the VHS tapes could do to make him angry.

At least it's not Sega Activator, Black Tiger...

UPDATE: Oh god dang, I wrote all that up without seeing the last minute or so of the video... dear god.

It's hard not to be nostalgic to vhs. Especially as they allowed a far easier way to record content as contrast to today's landscape of corporations being hellbent in making you not own anything and be happy.

For my generation, random VHS tapes were really exciting when discovering them in the house, since if they didn't have labels or cases it was a thrill to watch them to see what was on them. Being pre-teens we hoped we stumbled upon a porn tape from one of our older siblings, but it could very well may have been an obscure B horror movie. About 90% of the time it was just my parents recording football games or shitty Steven Seagal movies off HBO...but still, the mystery was always fun.

The youtube channel brutalmoose has a video type of watching vhs tapes bought on the dollar store (at least once in a half year he uploads shit). Buying those tapes seems like a good way to be arrestedby the feds.

Overall a decent episode, but definitely could have been better. The housekeeping scene did make me choke on my drink and laugh, that one caught me off guard. The "B-Dubs" joke was way overdone though, wasn't even funny the first time.

I sort of forgot all the cringe VHS stuff that came out during that time, seeing this reminds me of all the good times and bad times with those old cassette tapes.
