It's not even bad in a cringy way (like the second halves of the Shrek and Vegas episodes, Sega Activator, Life of Black Tiger...), it's just boring bad.
I would try my best to refute that, but I think I'd have to agree. The videos where he focuses on video game magazines, while not playing a game or game console, does show he's given more to work with because he clearly has more nostalgia for those things.

Oh, this was bad. The premise is okay, not really AVGN material, more of just a regular James video. Cringed at the Gambit/Foghorn Leghorn comparison.
Like I said, it should've been that. Would it be much to just take a month off and see if anyone can come up with a better episode? Why not another game based on a horror movie James likes? That Darkman episode was good, do something else like that!

I remember always laughing whenever I saw it at gas stations or restaurants when I was a teenager. I felt cool when I was 21 and finally bought some Rolling Rock (begged my friends to buy other things when I was underage) and then when I drank it I realized it's like a slightly better Budweiser or Miller or Coors. Now, Rolling Rock actually is from Pennsylvania where AVGN lives. He also drinks Yeungling in some episodes which a cool college professor I had from Pennsylvania told me is a landmark of Pennsylvania culture (their history BTW is fascinating with their resistance to Prohibition). So they were afraid of kids seeing advertisements for beer while hearing James swear like a sailor in every single AVGN episode?
It's lawsuit-related thanks to controversies over alcohol advertising or similar shit like Joe Camel. Can't pay a guy to drink your beer and swear at games meant for kids, because someone decades later might sue you, if some anti-alcohol advertising group doesn't first. I guess you're only allowed to advertise for football and other sports, where clearly no one under 21 will be watching since the young people don't care about sports or something.
Another thing to consider too is that early AVGN was never meant to be shown to a broad audience, and it was just a one-off character he created for a video series for his friends. In fact he was called Angry Nintendo Nerd, and he made a small handful of episodes with the sole purpose of putting on his old website and showing his friends at college. Eventually it got really big from there and he just ran with the character.
He said something to that effect at one point, that Rolling Rock was just whatever beer he had around, so he decided to make it a thing. He eventually got a Rolling Rock clock that he's shown a few times, too.
