James' latest AVGN episode felt like an April Fools' joke done 19 days too late, but considering how ridiculous some of the games he plays can get, is that even a bad thing anymore? The laughs (and, to be honest, the swearing) is what matters the most to me in AVGN, and this one definitely delivered.

I'm trying to imagine how this episode could have been during the golden era.

It's not the one horse game, the episode is about weird dating sim things like this in general. We get a little history lesson about the genre and how these weird animal parody versions became its own thing. James doesn't really play any of the games. He looks at the different characters and certain scenes. There is a little background story about how The Nerd is trying a new dating app. He ends up going on a date with a horse, then a bird, then other things from the games.

This episode would be better if lasted 10 or 5 minutes, or if it was a small part on a "weird shovelwares" episode. People are bashing this ep as one of the worst but I think James did a decent job on showing how this game is weird in many forms. Yeah, the gimmick of the vertical camera and a lot of the jokes didn't land, but I saw way worse.
4/10.

This episode is just terrible for how lazy it is and is the lowest hanging fruit possible. Granted, AVGN played very notable stinkers before, but at least they were games people paid money for.

My Horse Prince is a shitpost game, and it feels like a rare case where the game is more interesting than the review.

I really don't get why James doesn't just wear a hairpiece when he's playing the Nerd. He could definitely afford a high-quality one, it'd work better for the character than what he's doing now, and he could finally shave his head without worrying about jeopardizing the Nerd's image. It's funny to always see what it takes to have the dam break. Usually it's when the cow takes a hard right turn or they massively fuck up or even leaks of heinous shit (with receipts) get out there.
