I feel kind of bad ripping on his autobiography but there's a time and a place...

Confirms that he grew up with autism. It all makes sense in hindsight but it's amazing how long he hid it while on camera.

It is weird to have your wife write the foreword for your autobiography. Typically speaking, the writer would have a prestigious alumni or mentor write a foreword. Or maybe you play your celebrity friend card to get more eyes on the book. You don't use your wife because it pays to have someone who has no sense of bias and gives their unique take on the subject. Also, they misspelled "foreword" which -to be fair- it's a very easy spelling mistake to make but a good editor would have caught that. I'm starting to believe that there was no editor involved

Edit: I'm grabbing bits and pieces from the Reddit so pardon me as I edit as I go.

avgn 7.png

Another part of the foreword. The wife cannot write for shit and it feels like James wrote this bit or encouraged her. It's also wayyyyyy too pompous. This man has directed one feature. That is it. He directed a couple of shorts that played a handful of festivals but he hasn't won an Oscar, or a Golden Globe or even a People's Choice award. I can think of many other scrappy filmmakers that actually made features, got them sold and distributed to an international audience and the vast majority of those guys don't have an ego (excluding the likes of Tommy Wiseau but that's to be expected).

We can see where his free time goes. It's pretty adorable, NGL.

More power to him for writing this but the level of the writing is very 4th grade level. Understandable but over-simplified. But I have to question the timing and the purpose of this. Is this a self-exorcism kind of thing or is it pure hubris? I.E. all the big shots write their autobiography so I have to make one. That kind of thing. But I don't think he truly understands how exposed you are when you write something like this. It's one thing to do this when you're a beloved public figure or you're trying to clear the air over something perhaps related to trauma. It's another when you do it out of hubris and make a buck off people. It leaves yourself open to ridicule.

Edit: dudes are posting pages left and right. James gives his reasoning for filming in L.A. for the AVGN Movie:

avgn 5.png

It always rains on East Coast? Snow during Halloween one time makes it a bad idea to film? Were you planning on shooting around Halloween time? There's nothing resembling a desert ANYWHERE in Jersey? Yeah... If you read between the lines it seems like the co-director made the decision for him to film in L.A. either that or his wife.

It's funny how many asspats the wife gets. I get the impression his wife April must have been the first and only woman he's ever had sex with.

Another thing: the formatting is bad. When writing you want to format like this:

AVGN 6.JPG

You get the idea.

2nd edit: MORE grammatical errors:

AVGN 8.JPG

I thought this was a joke. I thought a dude was shit posting. But no. This is from the book. So many god damn errors and it's so awkwardly constructed. Misspelling "foreword" is one thing but this is just dog shit. There was no editor involved with this and if there was an editor then I hope to god he didn't pay for it. If he did he got ripped off.

Yeah that's bewildering to have the wife write the forward. I have no doubt Doug Walker would have happily written a couple pages for James.

There's more:

avgn 9.png

This is regarding the AVGN Movie and he doesn't understand how licensed games work. You'd think he'd figure it out when he's looking at the Wii shop or whatever current year Nintendo online store is called and realizes that there's no licensed games on these shops. No NES Batman or Gremlins 2 for you.

avgn 10.jpg

Yeah man, you're totally like Rob Zombie...

Another chestnut regarding the AVGN Movie:

avgn 11.jpg

WUT? I wonder if this angle was more his co-director's idea or perhaps his wife? Who knows?

Edit: lets look at the book cover:

avgn cover.JPG

It's fine for the most part. Kind of weird that it's mostly in black and white. The bottom row of photos are fine but the top row... I'm really not trying to be mean to this man but those top row photos are deeply unflattering. It looks like he's got Downs. They look filtered and/or drawn in almost caricature style. And he really couldn't use any photos of himself without the horrible moustache that makes him look like a lost Polonia brother?

There have been user reviews complaining about formatting on Kindle devices:

avgn book review.JPG

I can only think of a glitch like this happening if you didn't use Kindle Create to format the book. That would happen if you're just dumping the raw Word file (or in James' case, whatever Apple equivalent to Word) and hope for the best. Typically what you do, or what anyone would do, is upload the shit, check it very thoroughly before making it available. You can upload whatever to Amazon and get it printed (because this is a print on demand book) and do some final proof reading. This is why you have an inner circle that looks at whatever you're putting out there to catch any potential issues.

If he had an editor at all I would bet it was his wife.

You know? You might be onto something because his wife is a teacher. Granted, she's an art teacher but there's a decent chance he let her handle it and/or she insisted because of her degrees. You can have an English degree but that doesn't automatically make you a good editor. A good editor understands the context and is not afraid of hurting your feelings when they bring out the red pen and find all the errors. That's what makes them good.

This book

Is one of the worst books I've ever seen in my life. It's fucking atrocious. The spelling, grammar and formatting all look like it was done by a fucking 10 year old using word who just discovered that you can change fonts and text sizes. I have never seen a published book formatted so horribly. Like I'm talking using multiple fonts, in multiple sizes in the same fucking sentence bad. I assumed the dude just didn't have an editor at all but nope...his wife was the editor.

Point being, never use your wife, family or friends as an editor unless they're a professional editor and you're willing to shut the fuck up and take and use their advice and criticism and actually rewrite your shit accordingly.

dumping on his bio aside.

The only smart youtube channel in this sphere that makes since was RLM.

They didnt stick to plinket. The did Half in the bag, Best of the worse, and Review.

The problem with james attempt to ape RLM is the Screen wave people had no charisma. Nether does james. He videos need to ether be scripted or like james and mike mondays very heavily edited.

It worked out for Anne Rice. Her husband was a professor and a poet/writer in addition. There have been claims he was a ghost writer on her work and when he died there was a notable decline in her writing.

Damn reading all this really does put everything into perspective. I remember reading a 4chan post years ago by someone who was apparently affiliated with James who wrote about how James was clearly autistic and had weird idiosyncrasies. In a lot of ways I'm proud that James was able to overcome all that and make something of himself on the internet for a while. This book however is not doing him any favors and I actually feel really bad for him since he seems to unknowingly be opening himself up to further ridicule.

With that said I find it really heart warming reading about how much he loves his family. That's definitely not a negative trait. I do however wonder if his autism or whatever had anything to do with pushing his older friends away. Regardless, some interesting information that probably shouldn't have been made public.

Someone shitposting a bunch of r/thecinemassacretruth memes on the book's Amazon page:

This book genuinely makes me wonder what life would of been like for James had it not been for AVGN and its success as a whole.
I think what would have happened is he would eventually have made a low budget comedy horror film and it probably wouldn't have gone anywhere. He'd end up doing corporate editing work which is good pay. Whether or not he would still end up with April is a big question.
