US Vice-President JD Vance has launched a scalding attack on European democracies, saying the greatest threat facing the continent was not from Russia and China, but "from within".

It had been expected that Vance would use his speech at the Munich Security Conference to address possible talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Instead, he spent the majority accusing European governments - including the UK's - of retreating from their values, and ignoring voter concerns on migration and free speech.

The address was met by silence in the hall, and later denounced by several politicians at the conference. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said it was "not acceptable".

Vance repeated the Trump administration's line that Europe must "step up in a big way to provide for its own defence".

The Ukraine war was mentioned, with Vance saying he hoped a "reasonable settlement" could be reached, after US President Donald Trump's surprise announcement earlier this week that he and Russia's Vladimir Putin had agreed to begin peace talks.

But Vance's address otherwise focused on culture-war issues and key themes of Trump's campaign for the US presidency - a departure from the usual security and defence discussions at the annual conference.

He alleged European Union "commissars" were suppressing free speech, blamed the continent for mass migration, and accused its leaders of retreating from "some of its most fundamental values".

The EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, characterised Vance as "trying to pick a fight" with Europe, home to some of the US's closest allies.
Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia, told Politico Vance's remarks were "insulting" and "just empirically not true".
Vance used his 20-minute speech to single out several European nations, including the UK.

He raised a legal case in which an army veteran who silently prayed outside an abortion clinic was convicted of breaching an 150-metre safe zone around the centre.

The safe zone, introduced in October 2022, bans activity in favour or against abortion services, including protests, harassment and vigils.

But Vance argued that the "basic liberties of religious Britons, in particular" were under threat.

Vance went on to criticise the use of laws enforcing buffer zones, saying that free speech was in retreat and alleging that the Scottish government had warned people against private prayer within their own homes.

In response, the Scottish government said Vance's claim was "incorrect" and the law was "carefully drafted to capture only intentional or reckless behaviour close to a small number of premises providing abortion services".

Nine days before a tense national election in Germany, he touched on a heated debate in the country around mainstream political parties maintaining a so-called "firewall" of non-cooperation with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In the decades since democracy was restored in Germany after the defeat of the Nazis, there has been a consensus among its main political parties not to work with far-right parties.

"Democracy rests on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters," Vance said. "There's no room for firewalls. You either uphold the principle or you don't."

The AfD's candidate for chancellor, Alice Weidel, later shared parts of his speech on X, praising it as "excellent". The two reportedly met afterwards, according to German public broadcaster ZDF.

In his own speech, Pistorius directly addressed Vance, saying: "Democracy was called into question by the US vice-president for the whole of Europe.

"He speaks of the annihilation of democracy," Pistorius continued. "And if I have understood him correctly, he is comparing conditions in parts of Europe with those in authoritarian regimes... that is not acceptable."

Vance also made reference to the presidential election in Romania, which was annulled in December after declassified documents suggested it had been targeted by Russian state interference.

Vance told the conference: "If your democracy can be destroyed with a few $100,000 of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn't very strong to begin with."

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said his country remains "a defender of the democratic values that Europe shares with the USA".

"All RO [Romanian] authorities are committed to organising free and fair elections by empowering citizens and guaranteeing the freedom to vote," he wrote on X.

Vance later met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the conference, which has otherwise mainly focussed on Russia's full-scale invasion.

Zelensky said during the meeting that more work was needed on planning to end the fighting, while Vance said the pair shared a "fruitful" conversation.

Trump had said US, Russian and Ukrainian officials would meet in Munich, but Moscow has said it is not sending a delegation to the summit.

I think I am a little more qualified then the average American to speak on European issues. I have been to Europe (Germany,Austria,Poeland,Czech republic and Romania) and have family who live there.

Europeans have this weird like faux nationalism that is much like Canada's "we're not America ethos". They talk about independence and European exceptionalism but have nothing backing it as they have discarded all of Europe's cultural substance seeing it as racist or fascist.

They talk about how much they hate America and Russia for meddling in their elections but still support immigration which blatantly undermines European sovereignty. Russia and Belarus support immigration to Europe and have flown migrants to Belarus to cross into Poland. Other countries sue their diasporas who are more loyal to them then whatever EU country they live in. Countries like Saudi Arabia,Iran and especially Turkey fund mosque, imams and in the case of Turkey just tell them how to vote. Why doesn't this bother you ?

Being a puppet of America or Russia would be better, at least Russia is European and Christian so you can find common ground there, America is populated by your diaspora who are attached on a personal level. These migrants and the regimes they serve hate you.

I remember a couple of these stories popping up here. It got goofy since the deal was they did laws there saying you couldn't pray within that zone around the abortion clinics, so people tried making use of the legal gray area of doing "silent prayers" so they could protest there against the rules. Main way any police could really do anything to them is if they asked "hey are you doing [thing against the rules]?" and had them answer in the affirmative.

Had this "I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you." vibe.

New sheriff's in town, and just like last time he has you Euros' number. So get with the program.

JD's doing well, by 28 he should be quite ready to run for President. Would say he was doing better than Harris, but I have shit things that would have done better than Harris.

I look to Brussels, where EU Commission commissars warned citizens that they intend to shut down social media during times of civil unrest: the moment they spot what they’ve judged to be ‘hateful content’. Or to this very country where police have carried out raids against citizens suspected of posting anti-feminist comments online as part of ‘combating misogyny’ on the internet.

I look to Sweden, where two weeks ago, the government convicted a Christian activist for participating in Quran burnings that resulted in his friend’s murder. And as the judge in his case chillingly noted, Sweden’s laws to supposedly protect free expression do not, in fact, grant – and I’m quoting – a ‘free pass’ to do or say anything without risking offending the group that holds that belief.

And perhaps most concerningly, I look to our very dear friends, the United Kingdom, where the backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons in particular in the crosshairs. A little over two years ago, the British government charged Adam Smith Conner, a 51-year-old physiotherapist and an Army veteran, with the heinous crime of standing 50 meters from an abortion clinic and silently praying for three minutes, not obstructing anyone, not interacting with anyone, just silently praying on his own. After British law enforcement spotted him and demanded to know what he was praying for, Adam replied simply, it was on behalf of his unborn son.

He and his former girlfriend had aborted years before. Now the officers were not moved. Adam was found guilty of breaking the government’s new Buffer Zones Law, which criminalizes silent prayer and other actions that could influence a person’s decision within 200 meters of an abortion facility. He was sentenced to pay thousands of pounds in legal costs to the prosecution.

Now, I wish I could say that this was a fluke, a one-off, crazy example of a badly written law being enacted against a single person. But no. This last October, just a few months ago, the Scottish government began distributing letters to citizens whose houses lay within so-called safe access zones, warning them that even private prayer within their own homes may amount to breaking the law. Naturally, the government urged readers to report any fellow citizens suspected guilty of thought crime in Britain and across Europe.
And all I hear in response to this is, "Ukraine! Democracy! Fascism! Hitler!" Keeping the heinous attacks rapefugees inflict on Europeans in mind really puts these points into perspective. The trucks of peace, the grooming gangs, the rapes and murders, combined with all the government abuse of native Europeans- none of it benefits Europeans in any way. Not rapefugees, not elites, Europeans. All these people do is throw buzzwords around to skirt by the issue, because no one in his right mind would defend this shit, and they know it.

Can't they just shut him down over any pretension of ethno-nationalist ethos by pointing at his wife? It's hard to take him serious when he's tainting his own bloodline with the brahmin.
They could shut him down by pointing out his complete silence on his own party instituting anti-Holocaust denial laws/anti-anti-Semitism laws in several states like Florida and ND but alas, the hand of the Merchant is upon their necks, too.

“I understand what you are defending yourselves from, but what are you actually defending?”

Hit so fucking hard after bringing up Adam Smith Connor (who was arrested for silently praying) and the Munich migrant attacks.

Can't they just shut him down over any pretension of ethno-nationalist ethos by pointing at his wife?
JD Vance having sex with a Brown person is at least consensual, unlike the child victims of grooming gangs.
The survival of the next generation isn’t a political stance, it’s the basic requirement of civilization.

There's now a Wikipedia article about the speech (archive).
Several media outlets regarded the speech as a turning point in European–United States relations in tandem with United States President Donald Trump's telephone conversation with President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Some described it as a declaration of "ideological war" and "culture war" against the United States' European allies, and a "wrecking ball" to the decades-long status quo of transatlantic relations.

Reactions

CNN noted that most conference attendees who listened to Vance's speech "sat stony-faced," interrupting the vice president's speech with sparse and modest applause. Vance only briefly mentioned the Russia-Ukraine conflict, disappointing attendees who had hoped to learn more about the second Trump administration's plans for peace negotiations.

An unnamed Eastern European representative said that Vance's speech was the only topic other officials were discussing during the summit. Several United States and European diplomats and officials expressed dismay as the speech occurred, with one claiming that it led to "a room full of people with their mouth open". A former House Democratic member accused Vance of victim blaming Europe for its response to election interference by Russia, and claiming that Vance was also interfering with European elections.

John Cornyn, Republican Senator for Texas, expressed hope that the speech caused Europeans to realize that "their free ride on the coattails of America" had ended. An unnamed former senior United States diplomat described the speech as a "wake-up call" to Europe that it was not dealing with the same United States it was used to for decades.

Commenting on JD Vance's speech, German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius said that Vance's comparison of parts of Europe to authoritarian regimes was "not acceptable". The head of European Union diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said that she had the feeling that the United States was "trying to pick a fight with us."

Foreign Minister of Sweden Maria Malmer Stenergard declined to directly comment about Vance's mention of the Quran burning convictions. Former Prime Minister of Sweden Carl Bildt called Vance's speech "significantly worse than expected", and accused Vance of "blatant interference in the [German] election campaign in favor of far-right AfD." Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre said that while Vance could address whatever points he wished to at the summit, he disagreed that the "presumed" erosion of freedom of speech in Europe was more important than the ongoing security issues regarding Ukraine, Russia, and China.

Le Monde referred to Vance's speech as a declaration of "ideological war" against Europe. Politico described the speech as a "wrecking ball" to the summit,[3] and having brought culture war to Europe.[23] Writers in The Guardian fact checked elements of the speech and reported some inaccuracies and misrepresentations.

In response to Vance's remarks about the Scottish Government's Safe Access Zones Act which was enacted in Scotland in September 2024, a spokesperson for the Scottish Government denounced Vance's claims, stating that "no letters had been sent out saying people couldn't pray in their homes", and that only "intentional or reckless behaviour" was covered by the Safe Access Zones Act. Member of the Scottish Parliament, Gillian Mackay, who was responsible for drafting the law, claimed that Vance's remarks were "nonsense", and suggested that he was either "very badly informed" or "knowingly misrepresenting it".

Makes me think of Trump, too. From now on this is going to be my OrangeMan song.

"But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees..."

Haha, holy shit what I wouldn't give to see Andy Partridge's reaction to you making this comparison. I guess music truly does bring together people of all backgrounds and ideologies.

Europeans have this weird like faux nationalism that is much like Canada's "we're not America ethos". They talk about independence and European exceptionalism but have nothing backing it as they have discarded all of Europe's cultural substance seeing it as racist or fascist.

I'll entertain you from an European perspective. I'll admit, it's kinda eerie for an Euro to see the position "the Euros needs to pay for their own military and stop receiving gibs from the US". I think most Americans do not appreciate fully what their government did there. Sure, Europe nowadays is technologically stagnant, demographically a disaster and economically in full retreat, but the utter and complete domination of the European military and foreign policy by the US wasn't a small advantage in exchange for military protection. A bit more when Europe was relevant, but....

Most European countries do not have a foreign policy. Their politicians and representatives will gladly sink their entire economy and industry to obey commands from Washington and Bruxelles. For some Euro countries this means that for thirty years they haven't done anything that can be considered as "foreign policy". The Americans ask you to be good little colonial troops and send thousands in some Middle Eastern sand shithole that holds no advantage to you? That will be done, and hell be damned if those completely useless expeditions used the already limited defense budget. The Americans (and the UK) ask you to sink your own economy to own Russia? That needs to be done at once, who cares if this causes energy price spikes and we're to the point that 0,1% yearly growth is a "positive sign". Do you need black sites for weirdo operations? At once. What about your military bases? Build more, please, and remember that you can't arrest American military personnel when they go on a raping spree, they're your betters, peon.

Euros still live in the delusion that their "social state" makes them better than the Americans. Most Euros do not understand how poor they are compared to the US: sure, Spain is better off that fucking Namibia, but most Euro economies are stuck in the 90ies and it's only getting worse.

But I'll repeat, it's eerie finding the Americans exploding with glee at the Euros being humiliated. Reducing Europe to a continent that is essentially incapable of autonomous action, with their armies completely incapable of doing anything without US support, with their satrapies ready to die for any order from Washington, always felt like the endgame for the US government. And the poor Ukrops are discovering it in real time!

You know, I wasn't sure about Vance at first, being married to a street shitress and all. But I'm starting to like this guy.
Who cares about his wife's ethnicity? She's hot and she looks at him like she's actually proud of him. Is anyone seriously suggesting that this woman:

doesn't bring better DNA to America than this one:

Race mixing isn't civilization but rather the exact opposite of it. This isn't even a white supremacist thing, literally every society discovered that who you can and cannot reproduce with is serious business. That's why historically most race mixing was rape or encouraged by people who are rapists in spirit like when globalists encourage race mixing. By this logic you might as well say that a Paki grooming gang knocking up a teenage girl who otherwise would go on to have 0 children is a benefit.

I live in the United States, not India. The only Indians I want here are the feather kind, because they're actually native to this place so are kinda grandfathered in. Even if this Pajeeta is superior to the average Pajeet woman by virtue of her high caste lineage, JD Vance's wife needs to go back, especially since she's just her husband's beard for when he goes cruising for gay sex. Probably with men who look like his old boss, pedophile WEF transhumanist Peter Thiel.
