Saunders is more common in the South East - i.e. a fully Norman occupied area, his family where essentially brought along to keep the other Norman imports going - Saunders literally means "Son of Alexander" In Norman Franc, and later became a peasant name, some later generations moved north to regain influence to Scotland as they fell out of favour with the English Crown but didn't really amount to much, and got merged with or absorbed with other clans in Scotland with the name being given to lesser sons of 3rd tier houses.
