Kiwi Farms user "Null" suffers complications from being an international fugitive

I can second Amex. They're pretty hands off unlike Mastercard and Discover who act like massive faggots.

They were the pioneers of the miles stuff for credit cards. My advice though is to not tell anyone what you pick because there will always be some faggot who will call a credit card company and whine to them, even if they are a pedophile furry troon.

oh wow I didn't know that, I was just about to cancel one of my long standing cards too
Fifteen percent of your score is based on length of credit history. If you have comparable long and good standing line items the effect would be minimal. But for some, especially young people with a limited history, it can have an adverse impact on your ability to even access credit.

If you're monied and/or exceptional enough to pay between $700-2000 for a cell phone, you could go with the Librem 5.

If you want to go the dedicated open-source privacy phone route, the PinePhone is a much better option than the Librem 5, at $150.

But both major privacy phones are in what is basically the alpha test phase right now, so idk if that would meet Dear Leader's needs. They will both likely require debugging and such fuckery to get them working properly, and with PinePhone you have to select and install the OS yourself. But once you get it set up, you get a phone with hardware switches for microphones and shit, if you're into that sort of thing.

For dual sim, try Xiaomi. I use Mi 9 SE specifically, but you may as well get the non-SE model.
Be advised that the Mi 9T(pro)/K20 is not fully capable of recieving US bands, works fine in the rest of the world except that the K20 misses a europeon band that the 9T does have. Removing the chink goop from it's software is a chore, not gonna lie. But the facecam is fold out so you know when NASA or Xi wanna have a look at you, and the camera isn't really bad with a cracked gcam from XDA on it.

Stick to Xiaomi for the phone, here is the phone to go because they recently for some reason opened a shop here and the phones are like samsung mid-high tier without the rape ass price so everyone is getting one

Credit card i dont know, here we barely use those (the max limit by law is less than 1 dollar lmao) but recently we are using other services like Zelle to pay for stuff, is mostly used by people outside the country to deposit money to their families here without being assraped by the government fees (you can send money by official ways but is to much red tape and a hassle that no one bothers)

Google Fi is accepted for 2FA stuff if you can convert your voice number to it.

Star Alliance is a good bet for accruing miles. Between Singapore, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines you'll have good coverage in Eurasia.

Wells Fargo does business with absolutely anyone and has a pretty expansive network. I'd check them out. It's all run thru Visa, idk if you're fine with them. Also, be cautious, their bankers can be scummy fucks and will try to get all they can from you. I worked for them years ago and saw some real shady shit.

It's not going to have a negligible impact. If someone currently has a 12 year old account and cancels it today in favor of a new account the average age of their accounts will go from 12 years to 0 years which will probably knock 50-100 points off their credit score. In 9 years their overall credit history will be 21 years. In 10 years their overall credit history will drop to 10 years because the closed account will drop off their report completely which will again probably knock 50-100 points off their score. Don't close accounts with no annual fees. When they bug you and say they're going to lower your limit or close your account due to inactivity go buy a candy bar and pay it off to make them go away for another 12 months or whatever.

I have been travel hacking for years. I checked with a few of my best performing sources on your credit card issue. It is unanimous that the best rewards card for the international traveller is the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It has an annual fee but no international fees for use abroad and the best bonus in the biz. Second place goes to the Capital One Venture rewards card. If there is an airline you use most of the time, you should investigate their particular offerings as you often get really great bonuses.

Keep in mind that credit gurus never recommend cancelling your longest standing card. It could have an immediate effect on your rating depending on the rest of your profile. It may, depending on you situation, behoove you to keep the Discover active and just not use it. I know that may seem to defeat the purpose of your need, but is worth considering if your rating is important to you.
Agreed, but I'd add that if he isn't accepted then BOA Travel rewards visa is pretty decent for travel as well (a backup option). I think he might be looking for airline specific though. I like to shop around for flights from different carriers, but that's mostly domestic. I know nothing about Eastern European flights.

Won't happen. Get a US sim from a GSM provider (like T-mobile) for short verification calls and messages, and a local one to actually use your phone with.

I second this. You'll need a unlocked GSM dual band (important, since euro GSM is a slightly shifted frequency) phone. Unlocked is important because a lot of phones sold by US carriers are locked to that carrier (yes, even if it uses a SIM). You'll want it to accept either SIM.

Dual tray vs. single tray depends on how often you need to switch. It might be worth it to see if the US carrier with the US sim can do call forwarding to a euro number when you're using your euro SIM. That would mean you might not need to switch as much if you're around to take calls.

Isn't Chase one of the banks involved in the whole financial end of cancel culture? Not sure about Cap One, but I specifically remember something about Chase.

I'm canceling my Discover because they fucked over Dick Masterson.

I imagine that Chase card has the same problem.

I lucked out with my credit card apps, I got a super lower interest one with a $20k line and a 0% 1yr APR for transfers so I'm moving all my debt onto that and telling Discover to eat my asshole. Another card gave me $2k with travel rewards so I'm going to use that for new purchases and just pay it off. I more than doubled my entire credit line in an hour just by asking lol. In my experience, if you do have a low credit limit or a balance you're just rolling, reach out and try to swing something because it's worth the effort. These companies desperately want a hand in your pocket. Go with credit unions too, btw.

I'm considering that done. Moving on to the phone issue. I'll get a Xiaomi because they're cheap as hell. This one on Amazon is a straight upgrade at $170.

No fucking clue what I'm going to do for a carrier, though.

The Librem 5 is dead in the water atm. It's nowhere near ready for consumer release according to reports from people who've received units from early batches

  1. He's sending the Birch Phone back and waiting for a later model.
  2. It doesn't work with his Verizon based MVNO. Hardly shocking given that Purism hasn't made any attempt to get the phone whitelisted with any of the Network Operators.
  3. Cameras, Bluetooth, Video Out don't work.
  4. Birch case is much nicer than the Aspen case.
  5. Birch switches are way nicer than Aspen switches.
  6. Battery life is terrible but he claims it lasts 2.5 to 3.0 hours which is much higher than the 1.0 hours we've been hearing about from others.
  7. Phone Charging seems to be REALLY hit and miss as TLG had severe problems with this and Purism preliminarily concluded it was a hardware issue of some sort. This happened after he plugged in a USB-C hub to the device and attempted to use it.
  8. Volume Up and Down buttons don't work.
  9. He also has to use the command line alsamixer to fix sound... *sigh*
  10. Device gets pretty warm in use.
  11. He was confused as to why the phone has both a removable back cover and a sim card tray.
  12. Lock screen functionality is hit and miss when it comes to detecting what buttons you hit. It has no backspace or delete functionality so once you miss a keystroke and move onto the next one, you have to fail the input purposefully in order to rekey it entirely.
  13. Lock screen can be pre-empted by other apps such as Gnome Keyring Prompts indicating that it is poorly designed as its not actually locking anything.
  14. Recent software updates have gone a long way to making the phone feel more usable and snappy.
  15. NextCloud syncing works great on the surface but some of the incomplete elements of the OS detract from its usefulness (e.g. WebDav and lack of Nautilus)
  16. Previous / Missed Notifications appear to be impossible to access after the fact.
  17. His favorite app is the usage app *sigh*
  18. Bunch of apps he tried don't really work (e.g. Cheese, Maps). Other apps worked fine (e.g. Lollipop but it only would play FLAC files) EDIT: FLAC only issue was resolved by installing some additional packages.
  19. "I wouldn't have been able to do a whole lot with this device if it wasn't for Purism's support team and Hackersgame"
  20. "Purism would not have been able to do this at scale if they sent this device out to like 10% more people than they did"
  21. "This device is not ready for prime time yet"
  22. He still believes they can hit their Evergreen targets despite the fact that progress is moving at a snails pace and time is short.
  23. After using the Birch device, he's thankful that Purism assigned him to the Evergreen batch (which is weird because he indicated he's getting a Chestnut next...???)

I like HSBC credit cards because they have branches in the countries I visit. The rewards are so so. Capital One I feel has the best rewards

For phones you may need to sim swap. As an alternative when dealing w clients I have some soft phones that work with various VPNs that allow MFA
