So this year marks the twentieth anniversary of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. A PS1 2.5d Platformer game starring a young... cat boy and his little blue friend who lives in a magical ring who can grab and inflate enemies and use them as stepping stones to solve platforming challenges.

Klonoa never did reach the heights and popularity of say Mario or Sonic, but he did have a few good games under his belt. The first game in particular has a pretty special place in my heart. The colors that just POP on screen, the beautiful music, and the simple but engaging platforming that actually has a decent difficulty curve.

While the story was never too complex or deep, it did have a lot of heart and the ending kinda stuck with me for a long time.

Fast forward several years and I finally got to play Klonoa 2, a game that I felt was just as good and even better in a lot of ways. The themes and message kinda surprised me and I liked a couple of the new additions to the platforming.

I haven't played the other games, I heard the GBA titles were good, there was something for the Wonderswan and the Wii remake had a terrible English dub.

Beyond that, the series kinda disappeared off the face of the earth for a good while. There was this web comic Namco had running for a while, but it hasn't been updated in years.

Last year however, Henshin inc. announced that they were developing a Klonoa anime film.

Details are sparce, but supposedly it's a brand new story taking place in the same universe as the games.

A piece of concept art for the movie:

As far as I can tell, there is no current release date, and frankly I'm not even sure if this movie will ever see the light of day. But hey, it's nice to dream. :coster:

So, anyone here's who's played it, let's reminisce. If you haven't played the games, I highly suggest you try them.

I guess the movie's to drum up excitement for a new game or to get more people interested in the series. I can't see it working out though unless it's really good and word gets spread through the furry community or other niche groups.

I do miss the Klonoa series. All the games I managed to play were just feel good adventures that felt satisfying to play. I doubt they'd be able to survive in today's gaming climate, but if Bubsy of all characters can come back, Klonoa can.

I remember getting one of the games. I just remembered how cool klonoa looked and thought the game was pretty alright.

Shame it never had such a high popularity.

Although I wouldnt be surprised if klonoa is popular amonsgt the furries .

One of my favorite songs from the games:

I have glanced at a couple of... interesting pieces of fan art. Kinda made me die a little inside.

Also, a lot of people really like to ship Klonoa with Guntz from the GBA games, because why not?

Makes me happy to see a Klonoa thread even if their are only like 10 posts. It's a shame Klonoa was never a profitable franchise because I do like it a lot. Yeah the games are fairly straightforward, but the world is charming and surprisingly dark at points. The ending even choked me up a little when I first played it as a kid when it was released

Been a while since I played the gba games, but I remember those being more puzzlebased platformers.

Also we might be seeing some a new Klonoa remake in the future so that's something to look out for.
Bandai Namco trademarks Mr. Driller Encore, Klonoa Encore, and other ‘Encore’ titles in Japan
Plus "Rise of New Champions" with Shueisha.

Bandai Namco Entertainment filed trademarks for various new “Encore” titles in Japan on September 4. One of the trademarks—Mr. Driller Encore—also includes a logo.
Mr. Driller Encore

“Encore” is the subtitle Bandai Namco has given to two recent remasters. Katamari Damacy remaster Katamari Damacy Reroll, which launched for Switch and PC in December 2018, is titled Katamari Damacy Encore in Japan. And the recently announced Kotoba no Puzzle: Moji Pittan Encore for Switch, which is due out in spring 2020 in Japan, is based on the Wii title Kotoba no Puzzle: Moji Pittan Wii Deluxe.

Unrelated to the “Encore” trademarks, a trademark for “Rise of New Champions” was also filed by applicant Shueisha and representative Bandai Namco Entertainment, suggesting it might be the subtitle of an upcoming Jump property video game.

Makes me happy to (hopefully) see Klonoa given another chance. Especially since the movie got canned months back.

EDIT:

Might as well throw in this cover from one of the songs in Klonoa 2. Freaking beautiful.

Lately it seems like obscure titles or dead franchises are 'in'. I wouldn't be surprised if enough people yelling and yahooing about it might get Klonoa a reboot, too.

Also, thank this thread for finally reminding me just who this character was, someone I know has a discord PfP from it and I was about to tear my hair out wondering where it was from.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Klonoa Encore, but I accept that it's not a popular franchise. But who know's, this could be the lucky shot in the arm the little cabbit needed.

Also posting one of my favorite songs from the first game.

Bringing this thread back from the dead since it looks like Bandai Namco are testing the waters for interest in Klonoa again. I'm tentatively hopeful that something comes from this even if it's probably just another remake at best.

I just hope they release it on another platform besides the PS3's PSN. That's basically the only place anyone can legally get it now without having to drop a mortgage, and we almost lost that when Sony threatened to shut the store down.

That and Klonoa 2. That game just turned twenty and has yet to get a digital release in any form.
