The beauty of Eichenwald are the ludicrous excuses he weaves from whole cloth for his actions. Situations where your average fellow would realize that the jig was up and that they should slink away and pray that everyone eventually forgets about the whole thing are merely opportunities for Eichenwald to craft the most ridiculous stories and present them with a straight face. So when confronted with questions over a dubious payment to somebody online, he claims that he has seizures that scramble his memory so he can't recall what that payment was for. When he claims that Trump was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown in 1990 and is asked to confirm or deny it, he brings up some crazy nonsense about CIA agents giving messages for him to give to Tucker Carlson and piles some more on the teetering Jenga tower of his lies by saying that he forgot to write it down, this very pressing information given to him by agents of the CIA. The whole hentai situation, he could've just admitted being curious, or that he was working on a story, or just ' This isn't about my viewing habits but about this flyer I'm trying to show!' all with varying levels of success. Instead Kurt shamed his whole family by making up some yarn about him and his sons going on a bold internet quest to prove to his wife that cartoon pictures with tentacles exist.

Now most recently it has been Vanity Fair; "Sure I'm a contributor, just you see! What, I'm not employed by Vanity Fair? It's news to me!" trying to play it off as if he had been employed there in the first place. I can now imagine young Kurt telling everyone he's dating the cutest girl in school and when she denies it he says "Oh, what a terrible way to find you have been dumped!"
