Biology didn’t doom Lucas to the life of leering vagrancy, it merely allowed for the opportunity for it. His family life is what sealed the deal. You don’t get saddled with the kind of issues Lucas has coming of age in a quite middle class existence, there was some significant trauma somewhere during his development and just on statistical inference alone, it was most likely sexual.
My personal hypothesis is that an older male close to the family abused Lucas and when his mom realized it and/or suspected it, was overcome with guilt which then modified the way she treated Lucas. Developing brains can get seriously fucked just witnessing traumatic events, not to mention physically enduring them, and not addressing them in a timely fashion probably leads to the creation of more personality disorders than anything else.
Don’t get me wrong, none of this excuses Lucas for the awful person that he is. He has long since passed the threshold where being a product of his environment shouldered the burden of his behavior. The majority of people who are honest-to-God psychopaths are non-violent law abiding citizens, Narcissists tend to be well accomplished, women with Borderline Personality Disorder really learn to chill out once they cross 40 and respond well to therapy, and the list goes on.
Lucas could work, probably full time too if he had the right support in place. He’ll never earn a meaningful paycheck though, because he doesn’t view labor as a means of joining society and having a place in the world. Sadly, the virtue of being a mildly exceptional obese man with unchecked bi-polar paired nicely with a massive ego that throbs angrily because of an unsatisfied paraphilic disorder compels him to record teenagers making use of public transportation, isn’t exactly a recipe for the kind of person anyone (much less an employer) wants to keep around.
