Depending, it's about 90-120 credits for a PhD. Roughly 30-40 classes.
Lucas is getting 0 credits right now due to his classes being intros/remedial.

There are more classes remedial Lucas needs before getting ONE math credit, I am unaware if he took any english placement. Pretending he passes these classes, and then needs the same amount of back log for English, he's 2 years in before he gets one college credit.

According to his school at MIN they need 45 credits to transfer/AA you. So let's say 2 years before one, and he's at max going to get 12 a year. So figure the entire road of 8-10 years for a PhD is double.

Many people don't finish "on time" esp in science fields this doesn't make them failures or dumb it's nature of science based PhD's.

I dug a bit around SCC, their site is very nice and for a CC it's very well equipped, it's a shame Lucas will be there to tard and stink the place up, assuming he doesn't do what he normally does, shit himself and do nothing.
