Same problem here as is happening across the board.
- Fiction producing company is in financial shit due to the fact that their product line no longer appeals to a generation that can find cheaper, better, funner, more interactive, and more social alternatives in games/free internet stuff
- Desperate to open up "new markets" and despising the fact that "ONLY ICKY UNCOOL NURDS LIKE THIS STUFF!" they latch on to "woke marketing"
- This is basically just trying to pander to all the hip kewl kids on social media by going full Tumblr SJW in the most shallow and blatant manner possible regarding storytelling, characters, writing, tone, etc
- The assumption is both that pandering to the most identity obsessed social media screechers will equate to the billions of people they claim to represent becoming potential customers, and that "woke politics is big in media and social media, so this obviously makes it irresistible to the ordinary money spending 99.99999% of the population out there in the real world" which motivates them to ape the "wokest" figures they can find.
- Adding to this you have the various celeb/journo friends of company writers and creators going full SJW for much the same reasons, giving them social imperative to join the circle jerk
- The most tempting way of doing this AND ridding the fandom of all the disgusting inferior unfashionable fans is to go all out in actively discriminating against their most common demographic. white straight men. Obviously the company will be far more successful without them once they get all those wonderful new fans
- In order to make the millions of women/non whites/LGBT people who are TOTALLY gonna come bursting through the door any minute now feel "more comfortable" (and operating under the assumption that EVERYONE who is not straight/white/male utterly despises straight white males enough to actively fear being in the same room) draconian policies are instituted allowing for any man who has the wrong politics or who pisses off the wrong person to be permabanned, and any dissent is treated as harassment for various reasons.
- Adding to this, you have hilariously untalented and untrained female/minority creators hired on to replace people the board thinks are inconsequential
- Furthermore any open dissent or criticism of this new direction or these new policies or new works are framed by the company as being entirely motivated by bigotry and general evilness, both in order to silence and disgrace any potential threat to marketing, and to loudly proclaim "WE ARE SO WOKE DEAR MINORITIES AND WOMEN! PLEASE BUY OUR STUFF!" to the internet
- Having gloriously chased the icky nurdbros out, the company patiently awaits for them to be replaced a thousand times over by all the grateful women and minorities who will surely arrive any second now

- company is now in even deeper financial shit. we are now witnessing the "OH FUCK BACKPEDAL!" or the "ANY SECOND NOW I PROMISE! JUST DOUBLE DOWN AND IT WILL ALL BE OK!" phase of things in many companies.
Even companies that are doing ok have tried to superficially adopt some of the above measures in the hopes of snatching up new audiences. But companies that go full fucktard with them are pretty much doomed in the long term since new audiences will never appear in great enough numbers to replace the old one they turfed out

I wonder if it would be possible for a startup company to waltz right in and snatch the old audience by not pandering to the SJWs/Woke crowd. They could brand themselves as "Classic X" and make a (legally distinct) clone of the game. For magic it would be "Classic Trading Card Game: Mana the Hording. Name the company something like uhhh... I don't know "Mages of the Most! Maybe even going so far as to pick up a few people fired for speaking out against the hive mind they've got going.

WotC has been more than willing to sue over things as small as turning cards sideways. Everyone knows they're overzealous about it.
It's a major reason that the only big competitors to it, card-game wise, have had nothing to do with it, with games like Legend of Five Rings, Doomtown, and Yu-Gi-Oh (Pokemon doesn't count here, being made by WotC).

Cardfight Vanguard and Force of Will both do it too, but it's not "tapping" it's placing the card in vanguard or action phases. Different wording, same fucking thing.
Speaking of Force of Will, it was made in Japan as their version of MTG, complete with weeb waifus. Jeremy stated on Warski that he might be down to shift to FoW if there was enough support for it.

The point in the article is that they (Wizards of the Coast) treated Hambly (who made the rape joke) worse than
a) a person who threatened to rape a WotC employee and was banned and went on to say "I don't care about the ban, I'm coming to the event" (who was unbanned a year later).
and
b) an actual convicted rapist (who raped an unconscious girl in a bathroom vaginally and anally). When the reports came out (by a player trying to remove him from top 8, allegedly) it took them roughly 2 months do decide on the ban, where as for Hambly it was much faster.
Additionally the article goes on to describe that Hambly is an huge attention-seeking asshole but if being a huge attention-seeking asshole is bannable from the MTG community they should go ahead and basically ban every MTG youtuber, which is correct.
