To my limited understanding, bail is when you pay it yourself. Bond is when a company pays it for you. Typically you pay the company 10% of the bail amount and they accept the risk of you leaving jail. If you don't come back for your court date, the company owes the court the full amount of the bail. When you pay bail, you get it back at the end of your case. If you hire a bondsman, they get to keep the 10% you paid them. That's how they make their profit.

All that is beside the point, however, as Chris was being held without the option of bailing or bonding out. This is extremely rare, as bail is a Constitutional right.
