The cube stuff is probably based on some weird idea that I saw once where most buildings for space colonization would have to be 3d printed on world using materials on the planet, and that it's easier to do blocky/round shapes than it is to do elaborate architecture when you're trying to build a colony quickly.

Like even a lot of our current space probes and stations are very blocky for some reason

NASA also just likes using Hexagons for some reason, this was some concept art for a moon base.

Good point, the pessimist in me just feels like Bunghole is trying to steal the roblox audience and is using familiar design language to pull that audience in considering they are stealing from Tarkov

Tarkov is a poor comparison because it's run by five drunken Russians with a budget of $500. They can afford to have a relatively small playerbase because it costs basically nothing.

Marathon cost 300+ mill and 50k reoccurring is not going to be sufficient to keep the servers running let alone pay off the development costs.
I meant more in "games copying extraction shooters" besides Nikita sends half his paycheck to putin to fund the ukraine war

Their tools are hot garbage, and since they keep reusing the same engine they're stuck with them.
bungo has admitted that they could rewrite the tools but that would be too costly and shieet way back after they got rid of actilizzard, it was one of the questions i think regarding how new content would work out for the players now that they had no publisher pressure anymore.

Yeah so looking at some of the environments in the game a lot of them look like they were just dropped on the planet from a ship. They're very rounded cubes that don't look too out of place in some futuristic settings.

The guns also don't look too bad if you think of them as made primarily for function not form.

I think the main problem, design-wise, honestly, is the Characters. Some of them don't look too out of place as colony/military shells used by the UESC/Civilains to do shit on Tau Ceti.

While others look just bad or out of place.

The cube stuff was just them manifesting their inner easily amused nigger years before the Shape Store became a thing.

Well, now they have Overlords again, and Sony is going to shove their ASS up their ass.

>your life is already over Marathon child, enjoy studio closing Bungie

I think it looks really damn good. That stuff combined with the lighting and weather effects just works for me, love the contrast. Skyboxes are amazing too, of course.

Yes, they probably stole most things and a couple of characters look like trannies, but at least it's going for something and committing to a look. Too many games just look like whatever UE5 variants, regardless of what engine they use. I look at something like Crimson Desert and I just can't feel anything.
Oh yeah, the design aesthetic fucks in my opinion. The game isn't even really TRYING to come off as realistic and it's leaning into some surrealism angles that gives it a unique look.

I unironically would have considered picking it up had Bungie not left such a bad taste in my mouth with where D2 went that I swore off anything they made.

The amount of cubes I saw in the art design makes me genuinely wonder if they are trying to channel Roblox and bring in some of the brainrot Roblox audience tbh considering all of Valve's $10b empire is apparently only a quarter of the total roblox population
If they wanted Roblox audience then they would have developed some nonsense 'make your own mini-games' simulator, like what Genshin Impact did with the whole 'Wonderland' thing that is SHAMELESSLY more or less the same thing but with Genshin's own props.

No, as I said before, the aesthetic choices with Marathon are entirely aiming for an in-your-face artificial look. Everything has to be day-glo neon, weird writing everywhere that has some meaning you can't possibly decipher, and nothing you really interact with is natural as the local fauna itself has been warped by hard industrialization.

Probably copying beehives because hexagons are structurally efficient.

LoL these weapon frame, for one that is clearly the medium barrel length pump action frame from D2, while you might not instantly think that shotgun, and this gun are the same, under the trimmings, they are, anyone who has played D2 can tell right away.

the other one is the long barrel pulse rifle frame. resize.webp

Oh yes, I know that. I'm mainly talking about the bulkyness and blockyness of them, not the overall fact that the game straight-up asset-stole from D2; we've already talked about that, ad nauseam.

One of the bosses has the same run and attack animations as a Fallen Captain, and a lot of the AI in the game act like a weird mix of the Fallen and the Vex

As a 360 Bungie era Halo Boomer, I totally skipped Density and hate 343i more than anything so I haven't paid attention to Bunghole literally since Halo Reach but holy fuck do they think we are stupid and algorithmbrained if they can't even put in a campaign or firefight or forge mode because the majority of idiots lack the attention span to make custom maps or even realize games like Doom 2016 or Prodeus have map editors. If THAT is what they are advertising at, people are brainrotted. The fact Marathon will lack split screen for IRL couch co op is also super insulting imo.
I despise what this company has become.

Seeing them in their weapons page made it even more apparent. The actual models are different but the geometry, from the components to the angles and curves is identical, obviously to facilitate the reuse of D2 animations, but you'd think they'd change something, oh I don't know maybe not making all pulse rifles bullpups or something :|.
I see these things and I know exactly how they'll handle.

eta: the shotgun is more like the old trials shotty, not the saint 14 rapid fire

the best part is they handle the same, didn't even change anything, its so funny to me, the gall to just completely asset drop the guns and all they are into their other game, guns mind you, many people have thousands of hours using, so they'd know immediately, is fucking hilarious.

This game is sucking the fucking exhaust of Deadlock, a game in alpha that requires someone send you an invite.
Yeah but deadlock is free and extremely easy to get an invite for. Its not June 2024 where valve still reviews the invites for people, while Marathon costs 40 bucks which is A LOT for a game that was supposedly gonna have a free battlepass.

Extremely fucking pissed about that, Bungie said all of the content coming out would be free even battlepasses, and I bought the game for 40 bucks and launched to see a store with 20 dollar skins and a fucking 10 dollar battlepass. I nearly refunded out of anger but I've been waiting for this game since 2023 and have enjoyed every playtest so I said fuck it and stuck with it.
