Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

So, I guess this is really real, then? *sigh* Illumination's movies are so mediocre or miss, and it's mainly miss. I'm not a fan of their art style either. The backgrounds and lightning can be nice, but their character designs are pretty bad, with those long, skinny limbs, and mouths that look pasted on instead of part of the rest of the character. But even if Nintendo is very strict about the character designs I have a lot of concerns about the story.

Their Dr. Seuss adaptations were dogshit. If they couldn't adapt Dr. Seuss books I doubt they could do better at making a story for a Mario movie.

Yeah I felt generous saying "mediocre or miss", but I didn't hate the non-Minion scenes of the first Despicable Me (on TV, on a day when my boyfriend and I didn't have a lot mental energy and didn't feel like changing the channel). Unfortunately Nintendo has that deal with Universal for Nintendo World, and given that Illumination is Universal's current in-house animation studio this was absolutely part of the deal for getting that Nintendo World park section built.

The set design was really imaginative tbh. Even though it wasn't what people would think of when they think of Super Mario Bros., the underground seedy city was pretty neat.

Plus fungus transformation is legitimately horrifying

I think 1993 super mario bros movie was pretty kewl, but then again I was like 8 when I watched it
I just watched it again last night. I'll defend it again, it's a great 90s time capsule and I would have seen it in theater if it didn't skip over my market quickly.

I was like 6 or 7 when I watched it and while I never thought it was a great movie I still liked it pretty good.
You can't go wrong if Samantha Mathis is in something being cute. You can even tolerate Christian Slater as a lead.

She is cute and the massive sets of Dinohattan are impressive.

I just kind of "got it" as a kid, this is Mario in the "real world" hence why everything is dark and gritty, James Rolfe hit the nail on the head when he compared it to the TMNT movie versus the cartoon.

Yes it's a bizarre take on the franchise but that doesn't make it bad, I really don't think it's a terrible movie.

Honestly, the 1993 Mario movie is a guilty pleasure. Even more so after watching the Cinemassacre video on it which shows that at least some heart when into it, even if it was WAY too different from the game. At the very least, it's a better video game movie than the Max Payne film which retold the first game in the worst, most boring way possible.

Watching the Nintendo Direct and they just announced the release date for the movie as Holiday 2022. The main cast has also been announced.

Chris Pratt: Mario
Anya Taylor Joy: Peach
Charlie Day: Luigi
Jack Black: Bowser
Keegan Michael Key: Toad
Seth Rogen: Donkey Kong
Kevin Michael Richardson: Kamek
Fred Armisen: Crankey Kong
Sebastian Maniscalco: Spike

Charles Martinet will also provide his voice to the movie for a cameo type role.

TOADS A NIGGER LMAO
When I saw that announcement in the Direct, I literally though, "You're just asking for people to think you're racist." I'm fully prepared for the angry mob of anti-racists ready to attack Illumination for casting the black actors as A) a subservient footstool, and B) one of the villains.

Also, Jack Black as Bowser.
