As annoying as they are, they're pretty much required in order to make it so you can reasonably catch up to first place once they get a lead. As annoying as getting hit by one is, the alternative is driving completely unopposed with no issues for the entire race (since almost every other item that could hit you can be blocked with a single banana), which would get boring after a while.

I still wish they'd handle Blue Shells in the same way that SRB2Kart (a Kart Racer built on the engine of a Sonic fangame, which was itself built off of a modified version of DOOM) handles their equivalent "fuck first place" item. Where if you're able to drive perfectly at max speed (no slowing down, no getting hit, drifting perfectly, cutting corners wherever possible, etc), you can potentially complete the entire race with one chasing you. It's difficult enough to the point where even the best players can't avoid it consistently, but feels a lot more fair that getting unavoidably blue-shelled because the item box RNG hates you.
Most seem to point to SEGA All-Stars Transformed as the best example of a blue shell type item. In that game, you can get a swarm sent to first place which covers the track in wasps. The item gives first place players trouble, but they can take a path that avoids the trap with a little bit of effort, plus it can also affect the other places, though the current blue shell barreling down the middle does that as well.

Cope the game.

Waluigi Pinball, Mario Circuit 3 and New York Minute introduce some very tight turns that are not seen in any of the other tracks. Very nice.

I am really starting to dislike Ice Cream Land or whatever. Feels like the mid-air segment is fucked up, too. I'll be pulling up slightly, or leveling off or trying to fly fast and still barely miss the landing and fall off the map. Dunno what's up with that portion. It seems to work fine with lighter characters but when I run heavy it is dicey.

tbh SNES tracks usually suck and Mario Kart Circuit 3 was the weakest of the Turnip Cup, should have been Mario Kart Circuit 2 instead because of that jump.
Funny thing is that MKC2 was in 7. They could have easily copy/pasted that shit into 8, but it seems like Nintendo is trying to shove Tour in people's faces since that's what MKC3 is based off of.

It’s kinda scummy when you realize this whole set of DLC is just a means to recycle content from Tour. Even the “brand-new track” was officially revealed for Tour a day after it was added to 8 Deluxe.

What's the consensus on the best and worst tracks from the first two waves? Ninja Hideaway and Sydney Sprint are pretty near the top for me and I liked Sky High Sundae a fair bit too.

For me, it’s
Shroom Ridge good
Sky Garden bad (why is it a different layout)
Kalimari Desert good
Sky-High Sundae bad

I keep seeing people ranting about the fucking graphics on the new tracks, do people really care about that on fucking Mario kart? as long as they look ok and are fun to play who the fuck should care?
I guess some people really suck at the game and move so slowly around the track that they have time to notice this shit.

This is about right. I think the SNES track is especially good, too.
