It is probably the most superfluous gimmick Mario Kart's ever done. Fun, but easily replaceable.
It's not even a gimmick it's just an animation for your wheels. If you removed it, the game would still play the same.

The vehicle doesn't even behave or act differently like in Diddy Kong Racing where you could pick a hovercraft or an airplane.

Smash Brothers had more popularity than Double Dash. So it must've been something with DD in particular.
Smash had a competitive scene that elevated it above Kart. With Double Dash, most of its fans were the same ones that shout GC #1. Melee had broader appeal that left the Nintendo sperging circle as it was an underdog making its way into tournaments and fighting Nintendo’s censorship.

Some levels such as the Toad town made use of it for some cool shortcuts, but most of gimmick was purely visual.

Uh... there's two unique boost mechanics when you are in hover mode and your vehicle's handling changes. And it also opened up the level design options.

I fucking love Mario Kart. The first game I played as a kid was the one on the Wii and I actually got quite good at it. At one point the local library held a tournament and I made it to the finals even though I was pretty little (I can't remember if I won or not). I haven't played it in a while because my Wii died. :heart-empty:

I also have Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the one on the Switch), and while I haven't played them in a while (partly because I started playing other games and partly because I can't play Mario Kart 8 online since I'm not subscribed to Nintendo's online services), I recently started playing them again and they were still a lot of fun.

People still play Mario Kart 7 online, which is kind of a surprise. There are quite a few hackers though; about a week ago I played a couple of races in two different rooms and both of them had a hacker.
The first hacker just made it impossible to choose any other racetrack except for the one he wanted. I tried to choose Random but it would register like I chose the track he wanted. In the actual game, he raped people nonstop with bombs and lightning bolts. It was funny for a couple minutes because of the lag and the spammed sound effects, but eventually it became a pain in the ass. The tipping point was when everyone left the match and it became a 1v1 with me against the hacker (I obviously could barely move).
The second hacker just sat at the starting line and made bananas and shells useless, which was nice since it made the game even more focused on pure racing. Since the hacker always placed last, everyone got tons of VR points since he hacked his VR to be at ~900,000 (the maximum is 99,999)

Disagree only because Super Circuit on GBA. It's borderline unplayable.

Though SNES aged poorly and really isn't worth much more than its nostalgia value
The multiplayer could probably still pass as fun if it was the only Mario Kart you had, but it really is just running on nostalgic value.

I've been playing Mario Kart since 64, and i find it to be a really fun time-waster.

Latest one I play is 8 on the WiiU (I don't own a switch). I love the kart customization and the fact the princesses change clothes depending on what they are riding. My main is Rosalina. Other characters I play is Wario, Dry Bowser, and Bowser. I know the Switch version has King Boo, and I would totally use him too.

I used to have 7 as well before my 3DS crapped out on me. Bowser was my #1 in that game due to the fact that you can ride his clown car and give it big red wheels

also NEO BOWSER CITY FTW!!!
Sega's take on Mario Kart, save Sonic R,..
I don't get what everyone's issue is with Sonic R.

Is it unbalanced? Yes, considering half the cast is slow garbage and Super Sonic beats everyone. Also not the first time they've fucked up balancing in their racing game (Sonic Drift 2: Pick Sonic/Metal as a CPU, have fun getting 2nd place FOREVER)
Is it short? Yes, considering there's only 5 tracks, so most of your play time is condensed in grabbing the emeralds and unlocking the rest of the cast.

But other than that, it's an OK game. It makes sense that sonic and the gang run on their own instead of using cars, not to mention ever since Sonic Rush, his games have been nothing more than "Sonic The Race Car".

Mario Kart for the Wii was, to me, one of the best technical games I had to play. For days, I had to question if my handedness with both the mini analog stick controller and Wii Remote Control had anything to do with my driving ability.

Left-handed remote playing > Right-handed remote playing

In certain cases with certain race tracks, of course

In hindsight, the Wii really delivered on a lot of games. The Wii U's library was decent but nothing compared to Galaxy, MKWii, Wii Sports+Resort, Donkey Kong Country Returns etc.
I will stand by the fact that the Wii was above pretty much all of Nintendo's other consoles. The only one that might one up it for me is the Switch thanks to the stellar first year and 2019 titles.

The Wii had so many great games:
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Wii Sports Resort
  • Kirby's Return to Dream Land
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Endless Ocean
  • Endless Ocean Blue World
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Mario Super Sluggers
  • Super Paper Mario
The list could just keep going. Switch and Wii are the consoles I go to for the best of many franchises. The Wii U shat the bed in comparison to the Wii since there were less titles and amongst those titles, many of them had less content and ambition than their Wii counterpart.

I unfortunately never got to play Double Dash. I loved the Wii version and 64 is pure nostalgia for me. I do enjoy Mario Kart 8 and will most likely get the DLC, again for nostalgia reasons.

Hey, I appreciate Nintendo with continuing to support Mario Kart 8. Even IF it's recycled content.
Honestly same. I never expected it to be honest. I didn't expect a new game outright either, I thought they were just going to let it sit until the next Nintendo console comes out, whenever that may be.

With the pandemic and chip shortages, this is the next best thing. At least Nintendo was upfront with this approach. More life with your game at a price. I HOPE it's a fair price.
