the MWI URR (and a few others) have a sail that engages the charging handle journal, yes, this prevents rotation. the BEV block has a similar "nub" that isn't as substantial that also prevents rotation as well as the entire "block" portion that sits vertically in the BCG path. if you want, you can remove the bolt and install the BCG as well as the BEV block and it will not rotate.

i think you are overplaying how much rotatable moment is going on here as well as not understanding that when you engage with the barrel extension, you are transmitting force from the wrench, through the barrel nut, through the upper, which is free to rotate slightly but kept from doing so by a sail or nub as the case may be. the clamping force exerted by the nut is immediately relieved during removal, and when installing, that clamping force is not intended to be significant. 35-80 ft-lb about arm's strength. this is not the shear failure or plastic deformation point of 7075 aluminum, it is well below it.

if you are applying enough torque to go well beyond this, that is a problem of the person using the breaker bar or whatever trying to goon the nut on the upper (which you should not do), and during removal if there is excessive force needed to remove, there are methods that can make it easier such as penetrating oil, heat, cut off wheels, et c. i can dig around for a junk upper and see what exactly it would take to actually break it through ineffective rotation stopping power. i guarantee you it will be far in excess of any human's arm strength.

you do you though, if you sleep easier with using an MWI URR and then i think you're all the better for it vs bubba using a piece of carpet, some cardboard, and a couple whacks on the vise's arm.
I am in agreement that under normal circumstances the MWI URR isn’t necessary. I was recommending it to the poster who said he couldn’t get a barrel nut loose without adding more leverage to a breaker bar. I have seen broken receivers and index pins, but I have not had it happen to me.

I don’t even currently own a MWI URR, but it’s still what I would recommend to people to reduce the chance of breaking something.

Their AR lowers got a unique aesthetic going.
That reminded me of this pic I got off Operatorchan forever ago. I don't remember everything the OP said about it (he was a gunsmith and this wandered into his shop) but IIRC the lower is a cast Ruger lower from the 80s. The handguard is off of an XM148 and I have no clue what the muzzle device came from. Also note the Fiberlite stock and an A1 pistol grip that has been modified to have a hump akin to an A2 grip.

Thank God for....

Cheap and effective Magpul accessories and furniture.

i might be retarded. the MFI rail i got for my MP5 is listed for an MP5K but on the MFI website they're saying i can do whatever. there isn't a real difference, is there? i could have just slapped the rail on the whole time? i haven't opened the packaging up since i've found out how anal HKparts is with returns
The K vs normal MP5 differences only matter for handguards and stocks/braces. The K and fullsize MP5 patterns use different buttplate geometry. There are a few MP5K clone manufacturers like POF (the Pakistanis) that make a mullet gun, short in the front, full size in the rear.

Usually people go the other way with that.
Based on the parts involved I think it was put together in the 1980s when the A2 was the new hotness and owners were more amenable to its grip over the A1. The A2 had so much interest that Colt's early SP2s were basically just SP1s with A2 furniture and A2 profile barrels, with the same upper and lower as the SP1, until they updated the forgings.

IIRC Pauls M16 was one of those SP1's w/ A2 furniture.

A little Ruger history:

Military contracts and Ruger are not often mentioned in the same sentence. But Ruger did receive several contracts with various nations such as: The United states, The united kingdom, France, Germany, Iraq and Rhodesia (by proxy) to name a few.

I'll only high light a US contract in this post:

In 1977, the DOD put out a tender for a new revolver to replace worn out S&W model 10 revolvers of WW2 vintage. I can't find a history of all the bidders but Ruger ended up winning. and the DOD placed an initial order for 6,500 police service-six revolvers in .38 special with 4 inch barrels and designated these the M108. Further orders were placed for 2 1/2 inch barreled variants of the M108 and another variant of the serivice-six was purchased chambered in 9x19 NATO in the mid 1980s and was designated the M109 revolver. Information on the M109 is very scarce. I can't even find a NSN on it. As far as i know these are the last revolvers the US military purchased for general issue.
See the 4 inch variants here:

As far as i know the DOD still retains these guns. The paper trail can be followed to October 2022 in the US Navy and april 2023 in the US army. the trail runs cold in the USMC in 1989.

There are some of these guns out in the civilian world. It's assumed they are contract overruns.

So I'm a few months into a project, trying to build a Ruger 10/22 with my sister as a birthday present.

Jesus Christ I hate the legal bullshit, especially in Maryland.

So I was careful to buy a 10/22 receiver that had a rifle gun identity (like a gender identity for guns), not a pistol, so it should've been considered a rifle coming in. Except no, receivers are treated basically as pistols so I had to go through the whole background check nonsense and the 7 day waiting period anyway.

(Which frankly makes more sense than having identical receivers treated differently depending on what you intend to build it into. But still, that was a surprise from what I thought the law was. I think it might actually be that way for ARs, but ARs get funny here in all kinds of ways in their own right.)

Anyway, got my transfer of the receiver done. Got all the parts. I spilled the beans to my sister about what her birthday present was going to be, I'm terrible at keeping secrets.

I think we're going to finally sit down and build it together sometime this week. Should be really fun!

Ahead of that, I'm just looking at what the paperwork to transfer it to her would look like. Yes, apparently I do have to do paperwork to gift a long gun here. Or maybe it's that it's a receiver again. Idk I didn't follow the logic when my FFL explained it to me.

But that transfer shouldn't be too difficult. I hope. If I understand it correctly, I should be able to just fill out a form with her IRL and we don't need to visit the state police or anything.

1729974684045.png

So the wording of this is making me sweat. Why the fuck are they suddenly using past tense with the gift option?

"I received the firearm as a gift." The fuck? If you received it, and that apparently wasn't a crime, then why the hell do you need to fill out this form?

I really try to be educated on the insane labyrinthine legal landscape to guns. I generally do my research. But no matter how hard I try, there's always new ways to be surprised.

I'm sure this is nothing and I'm just sweating about nothing. Still gay and nerve wracking.

And ultimately (and the reason I'm writing this bitchy post) is that: none of this shit moves the needle on gun crime. Not one fucking bit.

There's no fucking Tyrone in Baltimore or Cletus in Brooklyn, MD (gotta be inclusive :tomgirl: ) who pauses before committing a murder or robbery and goes "oh no... but my cousin didn't fill out the paperwork properly before handing me this gun I'm using to fucking murder someone"

That's never fucking happened.

There's ~300 murders a year in Baltimore and these faggots are busy worrying about my stupid 3d printed receivers. They're all frauds and I hope they fucking choke.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Man, i had to go into Maryland a few times during my time in D.C and the smell of oppressively retarded politics hung in the air almost as much as it does inside the beltway.

not a fan.
It's my home state and I love it, but I'm definitely aware it's deeply flawed. And none of that love extends to its government.

The government is incredibly retarded.

Gun-wise, as retarded as some of Maryland's laws are, most of them are really poorly thought up and implemented. (In a good way sometimes.)

Like for example, we have a mag limit. Except it only covers purchases or transfers. I legit just go down to that gun show near DC every so often to stock up on all the 25 round magazines and literally walk them over the border legally.

Or their attempt at banning the AR was completely retarded. Owning a 5.56 AR is supposed to be banned here, unless you have a "heavy barrel", which is not defined in statute. You pretty much just buy a barrel advertised as HBAR, keep the receipt, and you're good to go.

MD wants to larp as some of the more maliciously anti-gun places like CA and NY, but they never quite pull it off.

Most of my bitching about our gun laws is how much of a pain in the ass they are, even though ultimately there are loopholes you can drive a truck through.

I'm lucky i was on the Virginia side so i didn't have to worry about any of that shit.

don't know what's going on here, It's a Val, being held by Konstantin Lazarev, but it doesn't have the associated (and very poorly designed) suppressor. Val modified to act as an SR-3? Super short "Moderator", BFA? (I've never even heard of such a thing)

Honestly kind of amazed about two things
1. Flamethrowers haven't been banned by a 435/100-0 margin to score easy political points
2. Footage hasn't come out of a hoodrat literally " lighting up the opps"
Eventually some psycho is going to get ahold of one and do a flaming family annihilation or burn down his cul-de-sac

There's a guy on Arfcom making his own beloved upper to cope with the death of his father. Thread is full of concepts for custom lengthened receivers shops other stuff
He says he has manufacturers willing to work with him

The thread also altered me to the existence of a Company called Cryostructure and their belt fed project which they claim will be out by the end of this year

They already offer beltfed specific lowers in both single and dual feed (that is, accepting both SAW Drums and mags) in both Firearm and 80% configurations

In his latest video, at 13:05, Max Popneker showcases the gas system of the STM-415 5.45 AR Style rifle (which is the piston version of the DI STM-545)
Strange as it has a short length of gas tube that funnels gas to the piston

A guy who kind of looks like Ivan Loomis of kit Badger if he was the co-owner of a niche holster company wants to sell you a side folding stockk for your SKS

Am I the only one who thinks the MP7 looks like shit? So many guns can do a better job in that role, and dont look like garbage. FA not withstanding.
I think it looks cool, but that's probably because it reminds me of an UZI. The caliber itself is a bit goofy though, and a product of its time. Modern 9mm hollow points perform well enough for PDW purposes. Of course, .300 BLK shorties offer much better terminal ballistics, at the cost of extra weight. A Sig Rattler with a full 30 round magazine is almost double the weight of an MP7 with a full 40 round magazine.

2. Footage hasn't come out of a hoodrat literally " lighting up the opps"
This reminds me of a story about a rapper who ended up getting a charge for “firing a missile into an occupied dwelling” or something like that that was used to boost his street cred and made everyone think he was a badass firing RPGs to blow up his opp’s houses. Turns out that the charge (think it was in Florida) used the very literal definition of a “missile” simply meaning a projectile, and he actually got the charge just because he threw a rock at someone’s house.
