I hate this trend, I don't know what to call it other than grifting and pandering but I hate it.

it is a grift. This trend exists because people don't actually want to play Minecraft.
When I ask the people who claim the mods they play are "better than Minecraft" or "make Minecraft better," they almost always describe to me the gameplay of a game like Factorio, Terraria, or literally any other open-world game that isn't Minecraft.

I consider rlcraft to be infernally frustrating but rewarding hellgrind.

Apparently the creator of Skyblock is has been going through a legal battle with several companies over them trying to take "his trademark and intellectual property" and making money off of it. This is unsurprising since how many times content was stolen and uploaded in the marketplace with impunity. I don't really play "busywork" as you call it but I greatly approve of the autism that is Gregtech (especially Gregtech "this shit takes literal months to complete" New Horizons), and terrafirmacraft is hardly on the same level of autism. RLCraft is arguably more autistic than any of these mods, not to mention poorly made and brimming with faggot niggercattle who insist this is peak modded Minecraft and refuse to play anything else. They're what 5E is to Tabletop, a nuclear autism bomb that no matter how hard to try to keep out, the radiation will seep in and the mutants will burrow their way in and complain that your shelter is not like their wasteland and attempt to change it...this got retarded fast.

Gregtech

It's honestly not very well made and thus not very fun. The entire process is just:
X > Machine that makes X into Y > Y
But one may argue that that's how all technology mods work. Though that is the case for most mods, which is why they're also bad. Their entire gameplay cycle is repetitive and redundant. There is no difference between plate production and rod production, it's all just put thing in > get thing out. You don't see anything happening, it's just a magical black box which does stuff. This is commonly referred to as "black box" design. A black box design is all function and no form, it forsakes creativity for pure calculation, and thus has no option for beauty, no soul, and no identity.

It has the poor design of GT and adds boring bullshit tasks. Each update makes it more difficult to create a stargate. This isn't done by new or creative means, it's just adding more materials required. It is purely artificial difficulty and is thus garbage.

It's so poorly optimized that it needs so many mods just to run smoothly and maybe get a respectable render distance and graphics (Yeah, I know graphics don't technically matter but it's still total ass). Why do people even bother?

I feel ya, if you have a great PC you won't really need many of these mods. There's some magic people do that I don't understand, I've ran modpacks much bigger than mine that are barely config'd and they run far better than mine. I'd read a bunch of reasons so far but it has gone to the point that I've used borderline the same mods as these modpacks only for it to have ran like shit. Hell I even used the same configs where I could and had issues. When it works, it's pretty great, otherwise it's just a pain in the ass.

The worst thing about this is that modders will often account for performance mods they use and not others so you have to find the right combination of performance mods that doesn't break your other mods.

Had that happen before when testing. There's a (somewhat outdated) github that lists various performance and bugfixing mods for versions and mod loaders but it's pretty undocumented and barely tested with what works with what. Your best bet is to run the minimum which can be counterintuitive. Sadly a lot of this shit is just undocumented in general since apparently not a single fucking user knows how any of these mods work and how good they actually are other than "they work." If there are people, they don't bother documenting. MC modding is navigating a dark dungeon with candle flickers that can either help you or be completely useless or even detrimental.

Probably open source it, he had little interest in continuing game dev which is why he only recently got back into it despite getting $2.5 billion (even with that money he's still solo deving). It might be better, but given what the MC community is like right now with fucking modloaders and launchers there would be 100 forks of this game with pretty much only 1-3 of them being used enough to justify development. Better or worse, it would be more autistic.

He made enough money before Microshit offered that much money (IIRC in just 2013 Mojang made $300+ million in revenue alone), to sell your game for $2.5 billion when you and your family could (hopefully) live comfortably for the next for generations with how much money Minecraft was generating before being bought is fucking retarded. Hell it easily could've made well more than $2.5 billion the way it was going in just a few years. Again, he had little interest anymore which I understand, however he could have instead retired and still gotten royalties as he passed the torch either someone passionate enough to make Minecraft better and better without selling out to a bigger company, or made it open source while still raking in money regardless. He pulled a George Lucas, he made a retarded decision that he now regrets.

If my company made several hundred million dollars, and we were to continue to maintain and market our golden goose of a product enough that it would probably make even more money next year, and I can practically pay myself whatever I want since I complete own the company, in what universe would this not make me a rich man? What makes more money in the long run:
1) Massive 1 time payment
2) Several smaller but still massive amounts of revenue that could greatly surpass the 1 time payment over a longer period of time
