Minecraft

Does anyone else find it annoying how cute and smooth the aesthetic is getting? I've kinda categorized the vibe of each versions of the game.

Minecraft until b.1.7.3, the classical vibe. generally a quaint, cozy, nostalgic, frontierist feeling. Weird dungeons with chests? Zombies? Where there people here before? Who cares! live your life and build.

b1.8 - 1.6 The medieval post apocalypse vibe. Underground strongholds, villages and abandoned mineshafts, you are an armored knight with enchanted armor on his way to defeat a dragon. There is a center continent with rolling blue-green hills surrounded by an endless ocean. Quite an interesting vibe. It felt distinctly European.

1.7 - 1.12 I'm not sure what to name this. Modern? Fantasy? New Classical? But a vibe shift happened with the new biomes being added. This was also the era where to popularity and respect for minecraft was a downturn. Nobody really thought about this game. Personally I kinda missed when nobody talked about this game.

1.13 - Present. With new textures we have the cute vibe of minecraft. Everything is much smoother and professionally done.

I don't know. I kinda miss the older look.
Old textures were made by programmers that gave zero fucks about art and just tried to make effective & easily understandable textures.
New ones are drawn by Jappa, who tries to follow some design principles which results in textures being overcomplicated.
A perfect example of this is Totem of Undying.

Webp is a tool of the devil.

Jappa's texture work is bad. He ignores any semblance of limited colour palette that the old textures used to mostly adhere to and instead does super shading on everything resulting in every pixel being a different colour. His obsession with shading is also kind of stupid when its a 3d game where textures get shaded in world, so sticking a bunch of gradients and random dithering on everything doesn't even do anything other than just make the texture hard to parse from a quick glance because it has no sharp defined edges. I think the fact that there are now 'professional' pixel artists who don't even follow pixel art rules like limited colours or clear visuals is a sign of the end times.

He textures like hes doing non pixel art, but is still working at the same resolution as the old textures, so it just makes everything look blurry and blobby. Then he goes on Twitter and shit talks the old textures like they are an affront to God and that he is the saviour for 'fixing' it. All the Mojang employees need an Ego check, badly.

Minecraft Wiki lists them as ".png"s. Who the fuck benefits from disguising webp and png?
Texture #1
Texture #2
Oh, You hadn't noticed?
Wikia and Wordpress and tons of other CMS codebases decided to randomly reconvert all their images into webp for no reason and keep the original filenames.
I adore how giant swathes of information can be randomly degraded with zero fanfare and with most people not even knowing. I love the future.

I hate having to defend nu-Mojang but I'd like to contest a few points here.
Minecraft *does* have a palette. This came up in one of the segments at a previous Minecraft Live event where they were blowing smoke up Jappa's ass. It's just that - like a lot of strange internal Mojang rules - it's never been publicly released.
As for the "shinyness": That's just kind-of a euro pixel art thing. If you've ever seen an Amiga game or a Nitrome game or the Truckers Delight music video you'll understand.

Devil's advocate. WebP is a better format than PNG for web images as you can keep the same quality at a lower filesize which is why so much shit uses it.

However it may be fine for displaying images on a website, but most software, be it forums, image browsers or image editors, lack in good support for it despite it being an open format.

And to add to how absurd this incompatibility is, WebM is a sister format of WebP yet XenForo has zero issues with it.

Then again JFIF is as old as JPEG, it's basically JPEG with extra metadata, and modern software still has issues with it.

Developers are retarded, therefore user experience degrades. A tale as old as time.

"Lower filesize" this isn't a filesize issue. This is a convenience one, on my old 16gb Samsung S5 I had more than 3000 memes saved on it.

No one gives a shit about your outdated Samsung phone, no one gives a shit that you like saving memes, no one gives a shit that you don't like WebP, and no one gives a shit that forum software doesn't support WebP user uploads.

Web hosts only care about minimizing space usage and increasing site load times for better SEO results. As far as they're concerned, you're a fringe minority and what you want means shit, and what they're doing with WebP is beneficial to them.

It's almost as if we're being off-topic in a thread where this exact issue has been talked about time and time again and yet no one has learned the lesson that corporations don't care about what you want, and whenever they do something that you want, it's an accident.

By the way, someone mentioned how the GregTech New Horizons team is backporting a lot of good mods back into 1.7.10. Any idea if those mods can be obtained/used standalone so that I could make my own modpack that's not bullshit hard like every GregTech based modpack? It sounds like an interesting experience.
There’s a whole group around legacy modding and retroforgegradle. I think some of the GTNH mods are explicitly designed to work outside the pack like NEI and they apparently try to keep compatibility when possible (or when someone wants to use them). 1.7.10 is alive for sure. And it’s nice having a solid foundation, no matter how janky it might actually be.

Now someone explain how mojang hasn’t don’t any of the improvements optifine and friends do … in the last ten fucking years?

What would happen if Mojang announced a Minecraft 2?
It will take five decades to complete due to thirty-minute work days. It will also have only a quarter of the promised features, said features will be slowly added over the course of thirty updates which will also fail to deliver most of their promised features. Also what the major addition that'll be the selling point will be is decided by a twitter poll

That was one of their April Fools jokes from years ago. Though a bunch of the things in that joke update were eventually added to the main game, so who knows...
TBF Mojang used 2.0 to show some features planned for 1.6 and 1.7.
Still, I won't be surprised if MS decides to kill Java Edition and its modding community with "Minecraft 2".
