Modern Web Woes - I'm mad at the internet

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
It seems inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it does this shit:

I was searching for a minor cow I'd been introduced to. Google decided it knew better than me.
My issue I'm having is even if the revert option is there it still shows the results for the one it decided were better instead of the fucking actual thing you're looking for. Shit makes me ANGRY man!

You want verbatim mode. Tools -> All results -> Verbatim. It won't try to change your query as much (it's exact word search), but it also won't find one hundredth of the things old, non-gimped search would. Google has been useless for a long time.

Yeah wouldn't bring it up if it wasn't fucked on all ends for me lmao but thank you for the sentiment. I'm 100% certain this enshittification is a double edged thing of negligence and also quasi intentional shit to farm 'engagement" like clickbait fuckers do but now bleeding into site functionality.

Unfortunately I can't see a campaign like anybrowser succeeding in the current day... Maybe because the devs nowadays don't even have the decency to inform you their shit only works with JS, webGL and chrome specifically, far too often I just get a blank page and no info on what specific setup the dev expects everyone on planet earth to have.

I think the worst part is when they get the definitions wrong either due to being half assed trend chasers or intentionally thanks to having some weird political bias they want topush at the given moment like how they had "goblin mode" codified as some shit about "beauty standards"and not "someone acting like a literal god damn goblin".

I'm not going to double quote but I finally got to reading the fucking blurbs in the images sent by @Golly Bo-Bolly and holy fuck this is somehow even worse than Knowyourmeme in terms of wrong/shit "origins" for terms.

Sayng "bet" in response to something literally means "bet". You already have a fucking definition for betting on something, even if it's a sarcastic kind of betting. You do not need a fucking "new word!" for fucking BET.

Skibidi is a scat term completely unrelated to skibidi toilet that's been used in memes involving music for 2 whole fucking decades now. Yeah let's just completely glaze over fucking SCATMAN JOHN AND THE SONG THE SKIBIDI LYRICS IN SKIBIDI TOILET USES THAT IT'S USAGE IN SKIBIDI TOLET WAS A BRANCH OFF OF.
Also noticed if they just don't want to even try getting the meaning of a word they sometimes pair it with "internet gibberish" alongside the definition.

The corpo ass images and handlings of these words and phrases in a way that selectively omits actual definition fucking infuriates me. They know this shit will be treated as gospel by the uninformed and "intellectual" class which is why they do it. Shit like meme terms being retroactively tied to lgbt shit and then treated like that was always the definition or more severely treating it like enshittificationis solely tied to internet website layouts being changed for corporate profit because capitalism guys! woah haha but no not us we'd never profit from your misery! FUCK.

Also anything that's a multi word phrase should never be a fucking word. Canon event literally is just canon and event's definition. It's a spiderman 2099 meme though and they want clout so they need to remove spiderman because disney/sony owns him and replace him with a stock image of a heckin wholesorino pogging out badly imitating the fish eye lens guy disbelief guy edited into miles.

Also why the fuck did they misspell boujie? HOW THE FUCK did they misspell boujie? There's like 50 other "also how" type situations entering my mind with every one of these entries I'm fucking screaming at the walls mentally right now.

Good for all you Brave users, for me it's a constant disabling of my add-ons because "it violates chrome store policy" or some such shit.
Back in the '00s, the browser I really didn't like using was Internet Explorer ("Internet Exploder"), because it was malware friendly, advertiser friendly (no way to disable popup advertisements until too late), one couldn't disable caching in it (IIRC), it was hard to disable JavaScript (there was like 2 settings to do that), and it was pushed by a major corrupt corporation. Also, web developers would develop mainly for IE (though at least then there was usually still cross-browser compatibility).

Looks like Google Chrome has become the Internet Explorer of Current Year, and has all the BS of IE and more. Like extensions not working because they "violate Community Guidelines" or some such BS. And unlike before Current Year, more and more websites are going increasingly non-functional because they're optimized for Chrome. Like I can't use an official government website in anything but Chrome or on "smartphone" because it's nonfunctional in the latest competing desktop browser. The monopoly needs to end.

I'm going to burn the next edition of Webster's dictionary.
FFS Clown World is hell.

I recently regained access to an old Imgur account from my high school days. It was a total shock to the system to see Adblock Plus in Firefox; I can't even remember when I made the switch from ABP to uBlock Origin, either. That got me thinking... what the fuck is it like to use ABP in $current_year? It was the first ad blocker I ever used, and I apparently stuck with it well into my time in community college.

I made a new Firefox profile, then went over to the ABP website to grab the extension. My findings were... disappointing, to phrase it mildly. For starters, they apparently use tracking cookies nowadays. Red flag #1

Out of sheer curiosity, I clicked on the "learn more" button and found out that they're now charging premium membership for Adblock Plus. For $40 a year (or $4 a month), you can block annoyances on websites that ABP should've already been more than capable of handling for the last decade... previously for free. (Red Flag #2)

Enough getting sidetracked. I wanted to install ABP, not gawk at eyeo GmbH's horrific monetisation. Red flag #3: it's no longer a "recommended" extension on the Mozilla add-on page. That's another shock to the system I wasn't expecting. Even more jarring, the user count is below 5 million people! What the shit? I mean, 3.5 million users on Firefox isn't anything to scoff at, but I could've sworn the numbers were way higher in the past. Okay, okay, I keep getting sidetracked. Let's actually install the damn extension.

1738736051705.png

Red flag #4: we have a mandatory post-install splash page, complete with tracking cookie consent banner, URL with referrer information (below), and nauseating marketing guff (namely shilling for acceptable ads and ABP premium). Also, I love how the mock-up GIF demonstrating how to pin ABP shows Chromium, even though I'm on Firefox and the referrer information shows as much.

Code:
https://welcome.adblockplus.org/en/installed?an=adblockplusfirefox&ap=firefox&apv=134&av=4.12.0&p=gecko&pv=134

1738736434307.png

Red flag #5. Pin the extension to my browser to have easier access, the fucking menu is shilling ABP Premium right in my fucking face. Thankfully, acceptable ads is still a toggle away. The extension settings also look much worse than I remember them being ~10 years ago.

I've been bitching long enough about this, so I'll try to wrap things up quickly. "Acceptable ads" are, thankfully, still opt-out (but for how long?). Unfortunately, the intrusiveness won't fucking stop because now you get a fucking survey pop-up asking you why you disabled their shekel generator. Oh, how I'd love to be a fly on the wall and read the survey results for everyone who ever ticked acceptable ads off. I'm sure they'd be scathing. That makes red flag #6

There is one thing I find hilarious... in a cosmic sense, anyway: uBlock Origin already has comparable features to ABP Premium... for free... using the same (or maybe similar) EasyList filters! :story: :story: :story:

1738737275519.png

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if ABP is also breaking source code publicity requirements under the GPLv3 and no one gives a shit about it because anyone who would sound the alarms is either being paid handsomely by eyeo GmbH or they're apathetic since uBlock Origin is infinitely superior. Regardless, I'm too lazy to check.

What the fuck is this shit

"What's that? You don't want to update? Fuck you, we're shutting your browser down!"
This is why I don't take Mozilla sisters seriously. I am not updating, one of the updates introduces a nasty backdoor which sends advertisers your information and I am not going to even entertain such a thought.
How do I unplug this piece of shit browser so it doesn't keep asking me for updates or disables itself after a month?

Is it going to keep pestering me with updates or can I turn that shit off?

I'd hate to break it to ya, but Chromium browsers do this shit too. I have an older Intel Mac that I downgraded to Mojave a few months back, and no Chromium build would work on it: not Edge, not Brave, not even Ungoogled Chromium even if I tried to compile it via Homebrew. Not only that, but I had to upgrade to Catalina for v128 ESR to install, and even then, the clock's ticking on Catalina support too. The modern internet does not like old operating systems, and they will be left in the dust, unfortunately. Apple is far worse in this regard than other companies, but it is what it is.

As to your Firefox dilemma, it's specifically related to the root certificate that comes in older builds prior to v115.13 (ESR). Rebuilds of Firefox like Librewolf and Waterfox are hardly distinct from upstream, so they'll most likely be affected too. I presume you're still holding out on migrating from Windows 7/8.1, since that's what this root certificate change will impact the most. I'd suggest migrating to Linux or something, but Linux distros just don't hit the same as classic Windows 7.
