Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

This is what Copilot had to say when I copy and pasted your post into it: -
Thanks for trying but that's not the guy. I think Copilot just threw the prompt back at you, slightly reworded, without accurately describing the YouTuber. I got an almost identical response but with a different guy:
I think the YouTuber you're referring to might be Dany (Daniel Williams). He was known for his irreverent comedy and humorous takes on video games1. Dany's channel, DWS Games, was quite popular, but he stopped posting videos in January 2022 and hasn't returned since. His disappearance was part of a story arc where his character "died," and fans initially thought it was a joke1.

Does that sound like the YouTuber you were thinking of?
Other AIs are even less useful, with Gemini just listing random e-celebs like Markiplier.

If it helps, the guy disappeared a very long time ago, close to 10 years by now, I think. He enjoyed some minor popularity on /v/, and I vaguely recall him having done a particularly funny Let's Play of Dear Esther.

Pre-emptive edit:
Remembering him having played Dear Esther helped me find him. I was thinking of Fitzthistlewits.

Thanks again.

I can't watch any YouTube video without thinking to myself "What am I doing?" and clicking off. Every video is edited to keep the attention of a goldfish or has some guy talking into his mic for an hour about something that doesn't matter.

Imagine your content and industry being so shit that they actually make you be like "Wtf am I doing? I should go and do something productive, read a book, talk to someone, work on school/career for fuck's sake".

The gaming industry is making me feel the same.

The next thing YouTube will do is add those shitty AI verification puzzles before videos.
Don't give them ideas.

I swear I'd seen screenshots of hour long unskippable ads years ago.
A few years ago, I was hit with an entire concert clocking at 1:30! Thankfully it was skippable, but it was part of a series of incidents that made me seek alts. This recent development wasn't exactly a surprise to me.

YT search got a little worse.
This reminds me of something I forgot to add in my previous post, once I read somewhere (VigilantCitizen if I'm not wrong) that if you search for certain string of symbols, you'd get shown the most horrifying videos, like self-cutting, that yt usually hides. I shrugged it off as yet another one of those creepypasta crap that were popular at the time, but once I accidentally did it (keyboard was set to another language) and found that it was true. I don't know if that still works.

If there was ever a chromium based browser i'll shill for, its definetely brave, between them supporting Ublock directly and always being quick to update their ad blockers its probably my favorite browser, especially for youtube. Add in Ad nauseum to help make youtube actively lose money, all the better.
Good for all you Brave users, for me it's a constant disabling of my add-ons because "it violates chrome store policy" or some such shit.

I'll never understand how people watch anything without adblock, let alone videoslop on youtube. I haven't seen a video advertisement in over 10 years (IPTV and ubo user here). I visited a friend in his home and he had cable TV running in the background. I was horrified at the commercials I saw and had this existential feeling of dread as I saw all the clownworld memes materialize right before my eyes. Mixed race coupes, revolting trannys, degeneracy targeted at children, everything was there. I asked my friend to shut the TV off and he was reluctant, as if he couldn't concentrate without his programming. From what I've read in this thread about the ads on youtube and how billions of people willingly watch that shit, my faith in humanity is reaching an all time low.

What addons are you using? You can always switch on developer mode and install addons manually. Hell you could do that with google chrome to a certain extent its just that you have to update them manually

Most ads on YT now is some Chinese anime porn game (against their TOS), a get rich quick scheme (against their TOS), or a straight up scam (against their TOS.)

They deserve to die.
It makes it even more insulting to think back to the Adpocalypse. I'm supposed to believe that the kind of people that make an AI dedicated to generating feet pics (yes that's a real ad I got) are too high and dignified to want to advertise on a PewDiePie video because he made a 10 sec WW2 joke.

Ah yes, that "video essay" ... likely better off as a text article.

IIRC there was one on the grass being green in SM64 that was 1 hr+.
That one I think you're referring to was deliberately stupid to make fun of all the video essayists. There needs to be more people making fun of them, It's the CS autismo programmer version of clickbait for these people, the same people who would swear up and down they hate clickbait and would never fall for it. Fuck 'em all, I say.

Oh it doesn't remove them, just disables them.

I've just noticed that Youtube is not showing every video from the channels I'm subbed to. Is that a new thing?
Depends on what type of video you're watching. Vevo's been hiding their music videos from certain regions and ips for quite some time now. More recently, I've seen a few channels posting different content types on different tabs (like "Releases").

I follow normal content creators. I was watching a review of a game, then when I opened the YT subscription page, the video didn't show up on the list anymore. I still managed to watch the rest of it via the YT history page.

YouTube has changed the 'landing' page to be a mix of videos from any one creator. So you might see videos from their entire catalog mixed in, but you can go to the 'videos' tab and it should show them in chronological order. Seems like just another nothing change. If videos are invisible completely fuck knows.

We REALLY fucking need some competition for this dog shit website.
It'll take millions and millions of dollars of money just to have even the slightest chance of succeeding. Unless you serve a market that Youtube doesn't serve (like Rumble for the right-wingers) why would they ever walk away from the all-you-can-eat buffet that is YouTube? The answer is, they won't. Vimeo and Dailymotion also existed, you know. Why do you think no one talks about them anymore? One stop shops with the most to offer always win. Always. Win.

That's the kicker isn't it? And also isn't there a law against companies holding monopolies like youtube has for years?

Youtube used to have competitors and the few that rose up got fucked by google intentionally. I remember there was one years ago that's payment processors just got rug pulled due to weird google shit.

"oh but it doesn't count as a monopoly because they're probably gonna be forced into selling chrome!" Madness. Fucking madness.

How do you stop people from all choosing to use the same service because everything they want to watch is already there? YouTube is a monopoly, and so is Steam. So is Google Maps. Xitter would probably count too if it wasn't for the lefties and righties shouting in their hugboxes. You could also potentially make cases for Twitch, Reddit, and Discord. There are some kinds of services where people will just naturally graviate to one singular place, and if it wasn't YouTube, it would've been someone else. We will never go back to the era of people hosting their own things on their own place, even if it might be better for mental or societal health. Maximum convenience, minimum taps, minimum amounts of places to check.

They are now introducing webgl to the player, if you don't support it, get fucked.
