I thought there'd be more comments about the truly ambiguous ones like Jade and maybe Raiden.Aha!
So it wasn't a case of the Mandela effect that she looked black in MK4. That's nice to know.
With Raiden it's like, I wouldn't be fazed if they made him white, but he's a Chinese rice farmer? Is it that surprising they made him Chinese? I mean he's keeping the damn hat. Why would a Japanese god that possessed the body of Billy Bob from Tennessee or Gunther from Bavaria be wearing a Chinese rice farmer hat?
It just feels so weird that they're going this hard for "realism" in appearance for a game like Mortal Kombat. It makes this:What is not nice is her face or her body proportions when you consider the concept art that made her look really amazing.
seem very hypocritical.
Sorry I should've said creative teams instead of Studios. I imagine NR, Namco and Capcom have multiple IPs they can milk to eternity. The specific teams responsible for the big 3 fighting games though seem like they're just trying to justify their existence at this point. Making part 7 of anything is not a good sign, and unless you're legitimately changing the world, you really shouldn't spend 30+ years on the same project. The issue, at least for me, is that they actually have a lot of IPs, including ones people would love to see again but they just refuse to do fuck all with.
I don't mind the game having a story by itself. I myself enjoy reading the wikis of old games I like, just to see the incredible amount of detail some autists managed to glean from a few paragraphs of text at the end of 90s games.I was admittingly one of those autists who are about fighting games stories but I appreciate the ones that are just retarded silly fun. Mortal Kombat was certainly very corny and not taking itself too seriously but all that changed with X and went balls to the walls in 11.
They are keeping it full throttle in 12 but I wish the series would have fun with itself again aside from random quips between the characters.
I just think going full on cinematic was dumb. Obviously you want an improvement from "a few paragraphs on a single card after beating arcade mode", but releasing a mini-series with occasional fights in-between scenes is just a waste of time and money. I think Tekken 5 struck a good balance. A couple cards with narration before the fight, do the fight, watch a cutscene after arcade is done. Simple, and leaves more time to work on the actual product: The Fighters.
I also think the story has gotten very dumb, even for Mortal Kombat standards, so it's not even time well-spent.
