Multiple people shot, unexploded devices found at NYC train station

NEW YORK (AP) — Multiple people were shot Tuesday morning at a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, the city fire department said.

Fire personnel responding to reports of smoke at the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood found multiple people shot and undetonated devices, a New York City Fire Department spokesperson said.

According to a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation, preliminary information indicated a suspect was dressed in construction attire.

A photo from the scene showed people tending to bloodied passengers lying on the floor of the station.

Further details were not immediately available. New York City police said they were responding to reports of people wounded either by gunfire or an explosion.

Trains servicing that station were delayed during the morning rush hour.

Don't you always want to avoid them unless there's been something like a full amputation level injury?

Tourniquets are applied whenever direct pressure on the site of injury doesn't stop the bleeding. Amputations are the exception when you typically want to go to a tourniquet first, as they'll lose a critical amount of blood before any clots will start. You do want to avoid them when possible because a properly-applied tourniquet is fucking painful and often traumatic to the patient.

I was told that if you see a heartbeat in the bloodflow, it's probably past time for a tourniquet; but people rarely tighten them enough anyways.

So it's better to just stick a thumb in it.

When you see a heartbeat in the blood flow, it's an arterial bleed. It's more difficult to control with pressure and they're more likely to bleed out if not treated in time. That's one of the few times when direct pressure might not stop the bleeding and you might have to move to a tourniquet.
Also, I know it's just a figure of speech, but don't just stick a bare thumb into a bleed. Use a clean cloth or something if you don't have sterile gauze. Using a bare thumb risks infection (to yourself and the patient) and can disrupt clots when you remove it.
