Neil Breen - a thread about a rather infamous Filmmaker

I remember reading an article where they interviewed some of the people who Breen hired for his movies, and they seemed to find him weird and kind of unpleasant. In the interview with one of the actresses playing his wife in that movie where he is walking around with a bandaged head, she said she felt very uncomfortable around him and got some bad vibe from the whole experience of the movie shoot. She specifically mentioned the shower scene as being especially unsettling.

I'd love to read that if you still have the source/link

I believe it's this article. The formatting is totally broken for my web browser, so I copy the relevant text here:
To find actors, he used standard online casting calls and paid fair rates for non-union work, but his eccentricities are still apparent in these exchanges. Klara Landrat, who plays Dylan’s pill-addicted wife in Fateful Findings, informed me via email that he never gave the actors a full script, asking them to learn only their own scenes. Landrat, who has yet to see Fateful Findings, has no complaints about working with Breen. She says, “I think he might seem aloof to others, but I don’t consider that odd, especially since this industry is saturated with ‘odd’ or ‘off’ people. Personally, I found him very nice: kind and polite with a cool edge.” As for some of the more notable Breenisms of the movie, including his penchant for having characters repeat lines of dialogue for seemingly no reason, she says, “I found the repetitiveness curious, though I kept in mind that Pinter and Meisner used it avidly,” an explanation that sounds, at the very least, highly generous to Breen.

I also asked Landrat about Breen’s penchant for appearing naked in his own films. Breen’s ass, like Wiseau’s ass before it, makes extended onscreen cameos. In both Double Down and Fateful Findings, Breen is naked and wrapped around a barely dressed woman. In Fateful Findings, that woman is Landrat. Not quite naked in a wet night slip, she awkwardly showers with a nude Breen, whose face is bandaged and leaking fake blood. “The fact that the director wanted to have things done in a certain way is not ‘off,’” she says, but the footage itself tells a different story. Landrat gamely tries to play the part of a loving wife, but the shot is so bizarre that it’s impossible to blame her for looking uncomfortable. It’s both a totally egregious excuse for Breen to do some naked cuddling with an attractive woman and a moment that epitomizes the strange appeal of Fateful Findings. Why is he in the shower with those bandages on? How has he not passed out from blood loss? Why is this woman getting her night slip wet? Do we really have to see his ass?

Actress Tommie Vegas, who appeared in I Am Here…. Now, has a less-favorable perception of the auteur. “He pretty much lives up to his strange reputation,” she told me, “He has a very set idea of how he wanted it to look and how he wanted everything to appear. Sometimes you would think maybe he was about to go off the deep end.” While Vegas never canoodled with a naked Breen, she felt uncomfortable when he asked her to unbutton her shirt beyond the point where it could safely conceal her cleavage. As she puts it, “Even just the way that the camera’s angled when you watch it, [it’s] like the whole purpose of that was hopefully the wind is going to blow open my shirt and you see my boobs.” When she finally saw the film—after Breen made her buy her own copy—she was so unimpressed that she turned it off after 30 minutes.

“It’s just not exactly my cup of tea,” she says, “and I personally would probably never work with him again.” She then adds, “But props to him for continuing to do it and having these followers. He’s doing something right, I guess.”
The thing about refusing to give his main actors a complimentary copy of the movie after all he put them through just strikes me as stingy and kind of impolite. Maybe he's just an autist who doesn't understand basic social niceties.

Since it's so impossible to buy them on DVD, I went ahead and just downloaded them and burned them to a single DVD each.

I started a trek this year to watch all of them with a friend, but we only got through Double Down (IE, the first one) before this quarantine started. We both agreed it was the most nightmarish movie we'd ever seen. I'm only glad I didn't watch it alone, as I would've assumed I went insane. But nope, he collaborated the story, so it really happened.

I had to watch the next two solo, I AM HERE.... NOW and Fateful Findings, and while I greatly enjoyed "Now", the same couldn't be said for FF. Despite all the hype Fateful Findings got, I gotta say, I legit hated it. I think I even reviewed it as "The most boring story ever commissioned to film", and I stand by that.

I am looking forward to his latter two though. Just haven't gotten to them. FF just zapped my strength.

Gee, Neil. Maybe if it wasn't so difficult to get them legally this wouldn't be happening.

Breen's distribution setup is a little bizarre. Apparently he can't update his website to handle new inventory. I can't think of anyone else who has this problem.

I'm not sure why he doesn't just sell his stuff on some third part site, like EBay or Amazon.

Yeah, I mentioned his website and the shit way he has purchasing set up. If memory serves, Breen had a few "fans" actually offer to help (or tried telling him how to fix that part of his site).
Apparently when he became aware of it, he went on his facebook and acted like "Oh yeah...you gotta do this, and this, and this..." instead of, you know, FIXING the site.

IDK why this is such a difficult concept. The man has FANS! For a Century21 realtor, he sure sucks at business.

Breen is very much making these films for himself. He really, honestly doesn't give a shit if other people see them. Its why he doesn't fix his site or give actors copies of his movies. He charges $30 because its a pain in the ass for him to do.

Though he is just greedy enough to not want people to pirate it. He wants it both ways, but all his films are very much just for him. Its why he's naked all the time and why all the movies are basically just his power fantasy. I give the guy props though. However it might just be cheaper to write fan fiction. Just saying.

I definitely respect that he's doing what he wants to do but he could treat his fans a lot better. If he was a nice, professional guy he'd probably have a lot more fans and not be a laughing stock

I honestly don't think he cares he has fans. I mean his movies are literally for him. They're so expensive because he doesn't want to give them away for free but at the same time he doesn't want to bother, so he makes you pay for the privilege. Its very difficult to admit to yourself something is just a pure vanity product, but Breen comes the closest.

I mean, good on him that he's doing what he wants and doesn't give a shit what people think. Could he be more popular and make more money? Absolutely. But I just don't think he cares. He's narcissus in that he is too busy just staring at himself in the mirror, he could barely give a shit what is going on around him.

Breen is the only one of the holy trinity who I think continues to not be self aware ... If I read it correctly, he thinks people laugh and meme because he's not quite "there" yet, and the next movie (... and then the next one ... and then the next one...) will be legitimately good.

Like a modern day Ed Wood.

Has his Breenliness come out in support of BLM yet?
