Netflix's The Witcher series

I like it kind of but where's Triss?
Probably minimal appearances this season. I think they are only touching on a few of the sorceresses. Triss was really a background character in the books, which is what the series is based off of.

If the show focuses on Ciri AND Geralt and doesnt make her into a complete ditzy Mary Sue it'll have a shot at being pretty good. But that father/daughter relationship that the games really took hold of might be too difficult for Netflix to portray. That begrudging respect and reserved admiration after what they go through takes a long time to develop, and shows tend to rush into character development way too fast.

So many things would have already turned me off but I loved the games and the books helped me learn English. There's a special place in my heart for Witcher.

Trailer makes me want to hope and believe that the need to gain viewers will force them to stick to the lore. With the GoT finale crap, I hope a lot of adaptations will hug source material for deal life.

Geralt needs to start growing a beard asap, even if it's not totally lore friendly. HC has the jawline for the role, but the chin needs CGI or some shit. My first impression is that he definitely looks better than the test screening. The wig doesn't look as fake, the bit at the end where his eyes are red and blotchy was pretty cool. I just hope they don't make him too pretty. He needs to be a monster himself.

I mean, I have hopes. But the Elves, fucking lol.

Though, I will watch this solely for Cavil, he looks the fucking part. The scrotum armor is just fucking terrible, why would you intentionally make your show look lower budget, even if it is? Also 'Scrotum Armor' can only be leather and everyone else is wearing plate, they'd be fucking shredded.

Also I have a feeling all the Elves will be black because of a heavy handed 'oppressed by white people' narrative and the black people made civilization but whitey stole it. What's with no pointed ears? Are they that way in the books? If so fucking lame.

My real problem is anything with Cavil is amazing. The Yen choice, meh. Triss isn't a big deal in the books, so it doesn't really matter. If I recall, she's not a redhead in the books either. So #NotMyTriss and TrissBestGirl don't really matter.

However, the problem in general is going to be Game of Thrones comparisons. It CANNOT be like Game of Thrones. It needs to focus on the Witchery and less on the politics. It really needs to be a razor focus on Geralt, Ciri and Yen. Not like GoT where it had these tons of characters and switched around a lot. It needs to establish itself as its own thing. Otherwise everyone will have GoT PTSD flashbacks.

They are intentionally trying to ride the Game of Thrones craze and you are going to be majorly disappointed.

I agree very much on that. The political stuff from the Witcher (I'm speaking based only on playing The Witcher 3) is fine, but what I really liked about it was the missions where you have to investigate some monster, figure out how to kill it/deal with it, and then you go deal with it.

It lends itself to a literal monster-of-the-week format. I don't give a shit about fantasy politics. I just want to see a dragon get slain after 20 minutes of Geralt telling me everything he knows about dragons.

Wait I thought that was Yennifer?

Well shit
Wheres the red hair lmao

All the women except Ciri have dark hair. Disappointed. Also apparently Eva Green was busy doing fuck all to play Yennifer but ppl are mad that the actress is younger?

Triss doesn't have red hair in the books. Yennefer is the one with the overbite. All sorceresses transform themselves into more beautiful women, which is why its hilarious they chose an uggo for Triss.

Netflix’s First ‘The Witcher’ Trailer Is Here And It Looks Incredible

Comic Con seems like just about the best place possible to debut the trailer for the big-budget fantasy series adaptation you’re putting on your streaming service, and so we have our first trailer at long last for Netflix’s The Witcherseries.

Simply put, it looks absolutely stunning.

The Witcher has been the subject of much hesitation among fans, both those who read the books but mainly those who played the CD Projekt Red games, as everyone is worried that the series might not be done justice. Controversies have arisen from everything from casting to armor design but…

…it feels like it’s time to put most of those fears to bed.

The two minute spot is a “teaser,” but shows off a ton of footage that looks fantastic. Henry Cavill, a Witcher superfan, looks perfect as Geralt and he’s clearly kept his monstrous Superman physique, as seen above. One fun tidbit we learned from SDCC is that showrunner Lauren Hissirch met Cavill first, who was dying to play the part, told him they weren’t casting yet, saw 200 other potential Geralts and ultimately went back to him.

In the trailer we also see Witcher staples Yennefer, Ciri and I think even Triss had a brief cameo. The show briefly showed glimpses of a few of its monsters, but appears to be keeping most of them under wraps. Many fans of The Witchergames have openly complained about differences like Geralt not having a beard or carrying two swords, but those are almost always answered by pointing to the books (in the books Geralt hates beards, in the books Geralt keeps his second sword on Roach).

I see very little in this that book fans or game fans should be able to complain about. There have been some unfortunate annoying cries about this version of The Witcher being “social justice” focused, and while we can see that many characters of color have been added to the cast (the games especially feature almost an entirely white collection of NPCs), it seems like a perfectly normal addition to me.

I’ve watched this three times already and while it’s hard to judge too much from a trailer alone, it certainly has the vibe of “serious Game of Thrones competitor” written all over it, something Netflix has been desperate for and unable to replicate thus far, though that’s true of everyone who isn’t HBO (Amazon will try for its own high fantasy series with Lord of the Rings down the road).

This looks incredible, full stop. I cannot wait to see more. There’s no date yet, but this should be out before the end of the year.

Here's the teaser trailer in question.

And here are more articles about this hot mess.

Netflix's Witcher shows off a ripped Geralt

Or tldr: Dryads from Brooklyn not Brokilon, Triss is black, Fringilla's black, everyone's black. Yennefer's a meek gypsy. Geralt's way too buffed. There's 0 Slavic feel (or even soundtrack), and it really looks like a discount GOT.

Edit: I'd like to amend that I don't usually mind switching character's races or whatever when there's no representation, "because it's the current year". But in the Witcher universe, there is a region called Zerrikania that is implied to be populated by black people, or well the in-universe of Moors / Dothrakis whatever. They're supposed to be exotic and shit. And Zerrikanians do appear in the books that the show's adapting.
So why the fuck do they make everyone else black too?

Hmm. Going this hard into Yennefer's backstory this early is a strange call. Still, lol. The Virgin Game of Thrones: Purple contacts interfered too much with the performance so we didn't do them. The Chad Witcher: You have violet eyes and a bunch of fucked up hunchback prosthetics. Go nuts.

Overall the trailer gives me mixed impressions. Some stuff looks good. Some stuff looks ridiculous. Also

Triss is a minor character in the books. In the show she's minor AND black so you should probably abandon all hope of a big titty redhead gf.

So many things would have already turned me off but I loved the games and the books helped me learn English. There's a special place in my heart for Witcher.

What's your native language? The English translation is pretty hit or miss, their might be a better one available. Or I'm just a retard and you already looked into it.

Elves in the books had pointy ears, often very bright or oddly colored eyes, sharp and distinctive facial features, and smaller, sharper teeth than humans.

Cavil looks great and also like he could break boulders with his pecs. Yen doesn't look the part so it'll come down to acting. Ciri better be a damned good actress because the relationships with her are going to be crucial. Since they look like they aged her up I imagine the writers get this.

As to Triss being a redhead or not...well, that's a bit rough. Different languages think about colors differently. Apparently the original description roughly translates to "chestnut" hair, but even that doesn't narrow things down much. So just assume canonically she'sa brownish-red redhead, or a reddish-brown brunette, or somewhere in between. Also Triss is worst girl.

Yeah, the unlikely family thrown apart by cataclysmic bullshit thing damn well better be the focus here.

Is that her with the ballroom mask

Yeah that's probably from the ball at Thanedd. It's a great and hugely important sequence in the books where shit gets real. It's referenced in the games a decent amount.

I agree very much on that. The political stuff from the Witcher (I'm speaking based only on playing The Witcher 3) is fine, but what I really liked about it was the missions where you have to investigate some monster, figure out how to kill it/deal with it, and then you go deal with it.

Witcher stories are made up of four basic constituent elements. Politics, family relationship drama, monster hunting, and cynical parody of historical events/folklore. Of those, monster hunting gets the least focus in the books by a fairly wide margin.

Witcher 3 actually handled the politics pretty badly. If you want good Witcher politics, play Witcher 2.

Wait I thought that was Yennifer?

The actress does not look how I'd imagine Yennefer but her age isn't the problem. Sorceresses rarely look older than their early 20's. Because what woman would, if they could choose not to?

Finally, to conclude a long autistic post: WHY THE FUCK ISN'T PERCIVAL DOING THE SOUNDTRACK YOU IGNORANT FUCKS, THEY WILL WORK FOR VODKA.

I haven't played Witchers yet but I am familiar with a few pieces of its writing, and by them I'm bursting this hype bubble right now by noting that you're more likely to see California turn Republican than you are to see a fucking Netflix show stick to the style of The Witcher's writing.

Unfortunately we're in a period now where diversity and not a good story is what is important to the script writers.

I wish they could make it feel more like the actual Witcher universe, who knows the adaptation might be good, but again there is this poison that has infected the entertainment industry which is a form of the old white saviour complex.

Oh we'll just change the race of all of these characters to meet out representation quota. Instead of you know actually making a series that actually has strong black/brown characters in it? Instead of just subverting actual characters from well known franchises.

(RIP Triss, another victim of Hollywoods jihad on Gingers, the ultimate white person.)

Hopefully it will be good, despite the production team with their SJW bullshit injected in. I think the feel of the books, that Slavic mixture of pessimism and practicality won't be there, but one can hope it's not all just flashy sword fights, racial tokenism, monsters, and gratuitous sex.

I got into an argument with someone recently over a new British period drama set in British India, they had a real NPC moment, when they were going on about this show and how it was going to glorify colonialism in India and why is it that these sort of things get made.

I said it I hoped it would be brilliant because it takes a vast group of under represented talent pool in the industry and give them mainstream exposure in good roles where they're usually casts as stereotypical cab drivers or bank clerks. And considering 3/4 of the cast were Indian it was a great accomplishment for diverse castings and historical drama.

They didn't know what to say, for about 5 minutes they didn't know how to react.

I like what I've seen of the show runner to be honest even though she's a woke lefty feminist. No idea about the rest of the team.

I can easily see them play that scene with the foundation of the Lodge of Sorceresses straight instead of a completely unsubtle parody of radfems.

One example I saw dissected as a very clever piece of writing was Witcher 3's quest line that had themes around domestic violence. It took a very neutral stance on it, which is a good way to let the player think about how there's always two sides to every story and reflect on their own reaction to it.

I'll be snapping my spine in half to eat my own ass if that kind of writing is transformed onto screen any other way than "fuck men."
