Depends on what you mean by firmware. Putting a microcontroller inside both of those decreases parts counts and increases reliability from fewer connections between chips, is cheaper for us and with very few wires to make a keyboard detachable from the rest of the computer. Wikipedia goes into quite a bit of detail about what this gained the TRS-80 Model II. I never played around with that model, the original had in the usual style the keyboard integrated with the motherboard, also think of the original Apple II, Commodore Pet and so on with much bigger housings for both. The fact that firmware is needed on fucking keyboards and mice is an indictment.
I second this post. I love the idea of the k400 but the plus is shit.Their speakers were always pretty good, though my newest set is from like 2010 and I haven't tried any new ones because they all still work great
That's about it, though. Their keyboards and game controllers are laughing stocks, and have been for ages.
Also if anyone knows a good alternative to this, the K400, let me know:

Mine was fine until one key went out. Just kinda stopped working. Dismantling it didn't help at all, it's just a plastic membrane sheet inside that looks like it got slightly folded, somehow. So then I bought a K400 Plus:

and it's noticeably cheaper all around. Much much flimsier, the touchpad isn't as pleasant, the arrow keys now have Downs Syndrome, and the on/off switch is in a different place that's harder to reach while holding it. It's just overall worse and stupid.
The only good thing about the Logitech keyboard (I don't know if LGHub still does that) is the way it would only lit the keys used in a game. In Battlefield 1 (or was it EAfront 2?) the keyboard would start blinking orange if your health was low.But I need the firmware to control the RGB lighting on the keys! I have it set up for "Heavy Breathing", it's programmed to react to touch just like the girls in "My Tentacle Monster Little Sister Is Too Cute, Vol. 5".

Maybe you disagree on all of these. That's fine, but when you feel what it's like to scroll down a long-ass PDF with one of these bad boys you'll never go back to a mouse. Bind that little silver Back button to toggle scrolling and let it fucking rip!!!
- Indestructible
- Wired
- Moves effortlessly
- More accurate than a mouse in competitive FPS
I'm also partial to Logitech's "Unifying Receiver." They're just a tad larger than a USB-A plug and can be paired with a number of their products (mice, keyboards, touchpads, etc.) Also: unofficial Linux support. They're better than shitty Bluetooth adapters by a mile. The aforementioned K-400 keyboard + touchpad is a must-have for any HTPC/couch setup IMO, although the other poster is correct in that "Plus" model feels like a downgrade.
One thing I like about Linux is that there's almost never official software for controlling peripherals, so inevitably someone will come along and write software that works 100x better than the stock software on Windows, with the only downside being that it looks like total shit. It's really something.
nigga I’d get RGB teeth if I couldThis is God's revenge on you faggots for buying rainbow, light up, disco a go-go useless computer accessories. Form follows function!
The BLT is a disgusting sandwichIt's missing the BLT from the name. Where's the representation of sandwich fans?
