Duckstation dev (made his emulator non-free a while back because he was angry at Retroarch) has decided to add an if statement to break Arch builds because he got angry at Arch users for reporting bugs from aur packages, and is apparently intending to stop developing any Linux builds because Wayland sucks.

Shit like this makes me always uneasy about switching back to Linux one day. If these nerds could only contain their autism for once.

Just avoid software that can't be forked. You see it with x11/xlibre. The x11 people were hellbent on killing x11 off, pushed things too far so somebody ended up forking it and I have the feeling that fork will live for a long time and eventually replace the original x11 for all intents and purposes. Would x11 be proprietary or run under a no-derivative license you'd be left with no options and would be completely exposed to the whims and moods of the developers. This is bad and something free (as in freedom) software avoids.

In this case the makers of x11 would very much like to force the linux community to adopt a broken-by-design protocol which again, would drive you to a display server environment that realistically can only be maintained by fewer, bigger setups. It might not be closed software in name, as e.g. firefox isn't, but in practice it makes it harder and harder to free you from the people behind it. So people rebelled, forked and they could easily, because of x11's MIT license. All they could do was mald, ban the dude's accounts and call him a nazi chud facist hitler. If the license would have been less permissive, they would have done a lot more than that.

Companies like Red Hat/IBM/Microsoft/etc. are trying to give you the impression that this is "fragmentation" and bad. It is not. Why would you want want a few people to hold all the power? What could for you, as end-user, possibly be good about it? It goes wrong for you everywhere else this happens.

We are actually living in very good times re: free software. It used to be that you pretty much were completely dependent on proprietary software if you wanted to use your computer in any serious manner. These times are long over. Things could be better but the truth of the matter is that you've never been this free.

You might want to check out NoAuthority dot Social. It was originally NoAgendaSocial and associated with the podcast, but one of the show runners became a born again evangelical and didn't like all the memes and people noticing the Zionists. They had a huge falling out/hissy-fit and now its independent. Still runs Mastodon and has a character limit though.

What might be appropriate for this thread is freesoftwareextremist.com. They are a bit on the extreme side (no proprietary blobs, coreboot, etc.) but I don't think they have any trannys or big anime posters .. although their instance is down at the moment.

Stenzek has thrown huge hissy fits in the past. Basically taking his own labor hostage because of some spurious reasons. I sit here, building duckstation off the AUR and I have no issues. I have no idea what Stenzek is talking about. I can't stop people from submitting bug reports. I can't even tell stenzek is "lol calm down" because he'll just freak out even more. I think what confuses me the most about this whole thing is the fact that, up until that commit, he did go as far as to include his own PKGBUILD in the repo for Duckstation, but he continued to get complaints from people using "broken AUR packages" to this day instead of his own. Okay... why the fuck were people still using broken packages instead of his then? Did he just not make it clear enough to people that his own package was meant to work?

And then I checked the duckstation-git (a) package on the AUR and noticed this latest comment.



So up until now, Stenzek never even had so much as a fucking account on the AUR through which to actually put up his own package or request ownership of the broken package's slug or anything? All this time, he made zero effort to indicate that his own package was even a thing, and now he's surprised that the packages that were there front-and-centre were still being used and still leading a bunch of spergs to come complain to him?

So this is step one. Next step will be removing Linux support entirely,because I'm sick of the headaches and hacks for an operating system thatonly compromises 2% of the userbase, and I don't even use myself.

This is just a fucking baffling lack of foresight here. It would be one thing if you said from the start "I don't use Linux, I don't know how it works and I frankly don't care, I can't support it". There is no way he could possibly know what the demographics of his userbase are, except that they are about 90% male and 10% male (but identify as women), and the number he chose doesn't even seem to be derived from anything other than the Jewish population of the USA (what did he mean by this). Linux marketshare is about 5%, and there is a greater proportion of the Linux userbase that uses their computers for anything other than web browsing and document writing. Linux users are generally less known for gaming than Windows, but surely there must be some reason why nearly every emulator is available for Linux. Also, the Steam numbers are of course completely meaningless for this, since people who play Steam and people who play retro games are not generally the same people.

The BSD license is great just for the fact that Stallman abhors the clause that requires acknowledging the original creator of a piece of BSD-licensed software in all forks.

Casting wide nets on all license users would be very disingenuous of me. The intents and philosophies behind why X project is licensed with Y depend on many factors. Most of the time, though, they're done out of spite for the other party - for example, a component being relicensed to AGPL to specifically thwart proprietary commercial use by someone the owner didn't like and doesn't want using it, ironically causing said component to be unusable by other people who want to stick to permissive licenses like MIT.
