I have a great level of respect for Miyamoto but he's not infallible. You have instances of him rebranding Dinosaur Planet as Starfox Adventures (not that big of a deal for me though since I actually like Adventures) as well as his meddling with the Paper Mario series (though in this case I'm more frustrated with IS not having the backbone to defend their own vision for the game).

Another paper mario game, another one step forward two steps to the side improvement from Sticker Star. The development team's constant avoidance of a tried-and-tested winning formula is bordering on spite by this point. I really don't get why they feel the need to reinvent the wheel in every game.

That’s my gripe with Modern-day Nintendo in general. It always seems to value quantity over quality. How much aesthetically pleasing and “innovative” stuff they can squeeze into the game over actual substance. They’re basically the hipsters of the game producing world. They want to stand out for its own sake.

I’m talking specifically about the Paper Mario games, not other RPGs.

Edit: Oh shit, I’m a dumbfuck:

The partners will just be watered down is all.
Does this mean foldered up bowser is going to be a partner. Hmmm.

I wonder if that shyguy flying the clown car will be one. I always wanted a shyguy partner.

Edit: Also it wont be watered down, it just be Tear-able.

They were already watered down in Super Paper Mario, because Pixls just gave the use of an ability or item, and there was very little difference between Mario and friends. And the game wanted you to play as Mario constantly anyways because only Mario could flip into 3D for some dumb reason.

Anyways don't forget, the early Sticker Star material showed off partners, and possibly normal battle mechanics. Both of which were thrown out a year+ later when the final version was showed off ahead of launch.

Call me a pessimist but I don't have very high hopes for this one. I can't really put it into words, but there's been a weird stylistic change that happened around sticker start that I think really changed the series for the worse. Characters got these chunky white outlines, bosses are basically doors that you need a specific key to get past or you just die, shrinking the roster of mario characters down to the most generic ones. There's also this weird sense of ironic eye-rolling almost borderlands tier smugness that seems to have crept into the overall dialogue since even SPM which I got sick of real quick. I get the feeling that these guys dont even want to make these games anymore, which makes me wonder why they just dont give the keys to someone who friggin does.
SPM had the funny though...

That is true, but this game is being released in a few months from now. But then again what do I know? They may make some last minute changes to the designs or something.

I am actually very excited for this game after seeing the trailer. I just really hope that whatever motion controls they implement in game are optional or at very least minimal. Nintendo does have a tendency of going overboard with the gimmicks.

Please understand, Intelligence systems is a smol indie dev.....
but for real keep in mind these are the same guys that wont bring back the wars series because they have no idea how to add waifus to it

Super Paper Mario has the best overarching story in the series. However that comes at the cost of the indvidual chapters being not as good and all the companions with the exception of Tippi being forgettable. Converting the classic mario gameplay into an action RPG format was an interesting idea but didnt quite work out.

Never said it was bad then, it even still had its more serious moments with Bleck and stuff, its just that all good things come in moderation and if your entire cast consists of toads saying 'Oh wow another locked door I guess we better go find the key, I bet its around here somewhere these game devs are sooo lazy' you start to wonder why you even bother wasting your time saving these little assholes.

Also, im sick of Mario getting leashed to a floaty pixie like creature that does all the talking for him.

It's weird, logically speaking I feel like it should be a good thing that they didn't stick to the old formula forever cause I know in my case I found the pokemon formula getting super stale after all these years. However, the way Paper mario has been going I'd also rather have the old formula again.

God damn it. This is a bit of a sperg, but I'm sick of the whole paper aesthetic thing already. The original Paper Mario on the N64 had 2D sprites because of graphical limitations and budget if I'm not mistaken - and in Japan it was actually called Mario Story. There was some stuff like the folding into a paper plane bit of TTYD and the 3D aspect of Super, but otherwise it wasn't so blatant that the characters and world were straight up paper. Ever since Sticker Star they just won't let the paper thing go - I hate the white outlines around the characters and the cardboard/glue/whatever stuff in the environment. I'm not really sure I like the origami thing this time around, either.

But honestly, I can get over the graphical choices and paper puns as long as the battle system and other gameplay is fun. I like the ring aspect, I just really really hope this game doesn't have the stupid sticker system and you can perform a normal attack without an item.

As much as i like we getting partners slightly disappointed they look completely normal it's a small grip.

On the other hand SHY GUY PARTNER HELL YEAH. Shy guys rule.

This announcement is just upsetting. The partners is a step in the right direction but I'm still not playing it.

Nah, Thousand Year Door was better. The antagonists were great in SPM but there was just something special about seeing that damn door and learning about the ruins over the course of the game.

I’m concerned about that affecting the gameplay, actually. You had the partners look different from the enemies to differentiate them from one another. Now you can’t even tell the difference if you’re surrounded by a flock of goombas, or a bunch of Bob-ombs.

You mean aside from the fact that all the enemies appear to have an origami aesthtic?
