They aren't really fun unless you have a taste for them and aren't using them for their intended purpose. I think most junkies say this because even they know outright admitting to being a dope fiend is still not socially acceptable outside dope fiend circles.
Doctors can get royally fucked over by the feds if they're merely suspected of running a pill farm. I needed a root canal a few years ago and the dentist treated me like a fucking meth junkie even though his assistant did the preliminary x-ray on my teeth and could see what was bothering me. I eventually had to tell him "Look, I don't care if you give me painkillers or not. Just fix whatever's going on."
You’re right, opiates when used only for severe pain don’t result in addiction. They basically just help someone endure through terrible pain without losing their mind. You couldn’t do surgery without them because most people could not tolerate the post-op days without some.

When I was a junior in high school I had a kidney stone that put me in agonizing 24/7 pain and I was prescribed Oxycodone. I took it as prescribed and felt the exact way you did why do people ruin their lives over this shit? Then one day I was bored and decided to take one more then I was prescribed because fuck it and within 40 minutes or so I felt intense euphoria. Just the best I had ever felt no worries just complete serenity. I knew from that point on why people got addicted to the stuff and why it was extremely important not to abuse it. There is a 0% chance Ralph is not using it to get high btw.
