In the US, you are assumed to be fit to own a gun until you prove otherwise. In the UK, you have to prove that you are fit to own a gun and are assumed to be unfit until you do. People are allowed to have them for hunting or shooting sports because those are considered valid reasons to own a gun. If you can't provide a specific purpose for what the gun will be used for then that obviously makes your motives more suspect than someone who can. I'm not sure why you wouldn't consider shooting sports to be a valid reason to own a gun.

For the most part I like our laws as they stand, they filter out most of the crazies while still allowing people who have a genuine reason for them to have them. As it is the responsibility of the police to vet applicants for suitability, the responsibility for this unfit individual getting their hands on a gun lies on them.

If the system worked as it should do then there wouldn't be a problem. But it seems for years now we have been hearing how incompetent police forces are. They can't catch paedophiles because they are too scared to seem racist, they don't bother turning up to burglaries anymore, but call someone a bad word online and they will be at your door. I just don't trust an institution like that to be capable of deciding who gets to have a lethal weapon.

Which makes me wonder what the solution is. Continue as we are, setup yet another agency to do it which will no doubt be a cluster fuck of lost records etc, or just put everyone on the naughty step and say no more guns for anyone.

In the States, some people have a gun for each room, kitchen rifle, bathroom 12 gauge pump action, coat closet sig p226, & the classic bedside .38 revolver. Some kids get their first guns when they hit primary/ elementary school age. I see a lot of British things concerning gang-lads with guns, & there’s other reasons (which are commonly known) as to their availability & frequency in the UK. Other countries (esp certain Asian ones) w/ a dearth of guns, end up with more knife & poisoning crimes, comparatively speaking.

How many times can I say "he should have done this, he needed help, it's this person's fault, if only this happened, blah blah blah" before I realize that I have no answer at all? These events seem like being forced to witness natural disaster from afar and say to myself "Well, at least it didn't happen to me." And that's good, I guess. But it doesn't teach me anything, and frankly, I have never seen anyone able to make sense of it or turn these tragic (tragic in the sense that technically it was avoidable) events into something to learn from.

Having associated with some dark and shady people it is piss easy to get a gun in the UK for crime purposes if you move in those circles. You can literally rent them for the duration of your crime off some gangster with ammo included. It's not even expensive. In the 90s you could get hold of a serious gun for £35. Dont know the going rate now. Not many crims own them and hang onto them. They circulate, get loaned out a few times and destroyed or are collectively owned by a gang.
