"4chan is one of the worst websites I know of, and to make my own site less like it, I'm gonna remove any kind of reputation system and make (You)s the primary method of interaction."


There is popular site that I used to occasionally visit, and one day it made the decision to completely remove downvotes because it "fostered negativity in user interactions". That change resulted in genuinely interesting user-made posts being replaced by an endless stream of dumb twitter screencaps, JPEG-crusted Facebook memes and similar slop that couldn't be downvoted out of sight. The site gradually lost a significant chunk of the userbase, including its most committed and interesting posters, and now it's barely worth even skimming through.
Community policing (especially the negative kind) is the best way to keep the discussion quality up. When there's no positive or negative reinforcement for a person's behavior, they have no reason to change it. Are a handful of speds who complain about negrates worth implementing a change that would be very likely detrimental to the community and discussion quality in the long run?

All I'm saying is, KF is one of the few websites that I still genuinely enjoy using, and I really don't want it to repeat the fate of the previously mentioned site.
