PS3, Vita, And PSP Stores To Be Permanently Closed In A Few Months - fuck game preservation lol - Sony

And yet it's still better than the literal nothing Sony is doing. Like I said before, it's not perfect, but the stuff they've been doing with it is impressive, especially when you factor in all the enhancements they've been giving to some of the older games. It does suck that the program is reliant on digital downloads but it is what it is I guess, though with how much MS has been leaning on the whole thing I doubt they'd cut it off anytime soon. And as far as the limited library goes, they've mentioned a few times they're going to be looking into adding more in the future, though of course licensing and technical problems will prevent some games from going through.

I'm just glad they actually seem to give a fuck about it at all, unlike Sony and Nintendo who as of right now seem outright hostile to people who want to play their legacy games.
Sony fans can never give Microsoft props even though they have been a better company than Sony for years now.

Nintendo isn't hostile to it, they just want you to pay 60 dollars for one.
Again, people keep saying this but the vast majority of these legacy games haven't been re-released at all... at least, not yet.
The one thing with backwards compatibility is that it will require the hardware to be tied down to something going forward and force a standardization. That itself can have pros and cons the longer it goes on. You could wind up putting yourself in a corner from a hardware design perspective if you have to consider 5 or 6 generations of machines. The OG Xbox and the PS3 were not standardized which is why they have so little support. They come from an era where they were both very unique hardware-wise, The PS1 and PS2 probably have the most chances at seeing actual re-releases, despite being earlier machines. They were much more simple to make stuff for compared to the later machines. If the PS3 ran on something else other than a cell processor it might have had a different fate and maybe the PS4 would have been able to run more games from it natively. But the internals are just very incompatible with modern set-ups.
For some reason I doubt Sony would give a fuck about it even if all the hardware was standardized. I'm sure you've seen the infamous Jim Ryan quote.
The Xbox had to make choices on what to cut as well, the Series X doesn't support anything Kinect related.
Frankly I couldn't care less. Kinect was shit and the beginning of Xbox's fall from grace in the Xbox One generation.

Making you pay 60 bucks for it is pretty hostile. The whole point of backwards compatibility is to make it so you don't feel like shit getting the next system. I agree Xboxs BC isn't amazing but it's better than Nintendo or Sonys by a mile and a half. There's absolutely no reason why the PS5 shouldn't be able to play PS1 and PS2 games, they had emulators for PCs in the fucking 90s (maybe you shouldn't have pissed off the emulation scene by trying to sue them into the dirt when Bleem got popular eh Sony?). I can understand not having PS3 emulation because the PS3 is a black box in terms of engineering but when your competitors console can play more God Of War games than yours can and you're the fucking owner of God Of War you have fucked up. At the same time I can't really fault Microsoft for having limited compatibility for original Xbox games because a shitton of those games are a licensing nightmare or are owned by dead companies. It's a miracle that shit like Breakdown is backwards compatible since you'd think it would be in limbo due to it being old as fuck, being developed before the Bandai Namco merger (iirc), and being obscure as all hell. I'll take that over literally nothing. I mean what are they supposed to do, find a way to make the Steel Battalion controller somehow work with the Xbone despite completely different ports, the controller having more buttons than some keyboards, and there being maybe 30 people who own both the controller and the game and have and Xbone.

You see the thing the big weakness about the Xbox compatibility is that currently supported games could have their rights taken away as well, and microsoft would be forced to delist them, so unless you would have downloaded it and added to your list before the date any and all future attempts to play the game wouldn't work since they're server reliant.

I mean we just witnessed a few large buy ups more will probably happen in the future or a company may split up and the rights get sent to the wind. Take Spike Chunsoft for example, they had publishing deals that expired and the games were taken off digital storefronts. Now if something similar happens to the xbox series x and it's a backwards compatible game, the disc won't even work and you'll need the original hardware in order for your disc to work if you didn't download it by the takedown date.

Meanwhile if everything backwards compatibility is hardware based that's not even an issue.

Xbox series X is going to suffer the same problem, the support they have for the OG Xbox is minimal (it's only 39 supported games) and if you put your disc in it needs to be connected to Microsoft servers to trigger the download.
That's not Microsoft's fault. Original Xbox games range from 2001 - 2009. Developers and publishers themselves have to approve their games for BC. Licensing issues for older games are tricky because some of those companies aren't around.
I'm just disappointed I never got to play games like Crimson Skies, Whacked!, Mechassault, DOA Ultimate online and download the DLC for Crimson Skies and Splinter Cell, but that's on me because I could have in theory done so when I had a 360 and Online, I was just too focused on what was current (other than playing Halo 2)

Just something about the original Xbox Live not even lasting a decade that bums me out.
Theoretically, you could still play some OG Xbox games online with XLink Kai. The official servers are down; but, players have found workarounds to preserve said online games.

Yes I know which is exactly why I take issue with it, backwards compatibility is to basically placate the autists among the group who have hung on to their games such as myself. But now you've put everything going forward on IP rights which could change for the future installments of Xbox, so say companies who initially gave their rights just flat out don't exist 5-10 years from now, or a competitor buys out the company. All future editions of Xbox lose out on the ability to play those games..

Like true crossgen compatibility would have the hardware suited to play it or have it on the software side do emulation which don't require needing legal permission. Leaving stuff up to digital downloads tied to rights is a bit of a band-aid solution. Like for the short term it will work, but for the long term flaws in the digital delivery system will definitely appear. Like the titles I see at most risk are mostly the Star Wars ones, if Disney ever sells the IP or it changes hands in some fashion those games will more than likely expire.

You're still going to need to primarily rely on the original xbox and 360 to play those games and can't rely on the series X to fully replace them.

So I heard recently that certain updates and patches are being pulled from the PSN Store well in advance of the official deadline for purchases...crippling some games that had performance or content patches.

Does anybody know if the Zone of the Enders HD Collection performance patch for PS3 is still up? I hear the second game plays like crap without that patch.

Nothing got pulled in terms of patches, this has been a routine occurrence with the PS3 where patches just go offline for no reason and then suddenly go back up again. The affected games are only from the EU for the most part and it's only like 30 games in total.

The same thing happened to the 3ds and other older game networks, they're not stable.

I'm currently going trough all my games to install patches and yes, the patch is still there(at least in europe)

What I notice though is that a lot of DLC is missing from games that had DLC, JoJo for instance has NOTHING, and South Park the stick of truth also is missing all of the DLC.

Yeah those are two along with Dante's Inferno where the DLC just up and vanishes only to appear weeks later.

Aaand... backtracked.

PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita Will Continue Operations

I really like the way the playstation division of sony is being run at the moment. Well-thought out, solid and determined choices, made exclusively by talented and dedicated executives, the best california has to offer. I foresee great things in the future for the brand and their products.

It's PlayStation of America is currently being run by Sony of Japan. Yoshida, the CEO of Sony is very much involved, moreso than jim Ryan is. His entire lynchpin is to have all these media properties tied to movie and games.

It's good they backtracked on it, but they still did not adress the problem of the internal battery dying making the PS4/5 into a brick.
That's not really a problem, you need it to connect to a time page. Every company has a page like that for devices.

If (and this is a big fucking "if") they offer a solution, it will be in the form of either
1) standalone New superslim PS4 that they'll retail for $149.99
2) tie all of your saves and DLC content to PSNow/PSplus subscription (which is what everyone else is doing) so you can "upgrade" your stuff or let it hang hostage in an escrow server, ala nintendo.

They're upgrading the PSNow network and the general network in the coming months. So changes are expected to happen.

"Not a problem" for now, but later down the line, it does not even need to be that sony shuts down the server, but can be anything that disconnects it from the server.

Not really, network workarounds already exist and have been documented. The Archstones which is a fan run Demon's Souls server and Gonespy(which is what the defunct games on Gamespy's network use) gets around the PSN network without any outside modifications. Worst case scenario is that you have to emulate a webpage and have the PS3 connect to it by changing the internet settings.

People also already use programs like Charles to force downgrade digital games. This requires zero firmware fuckery with the console itself.
