On the topic of polygamy, African countries where it's legal are rife with news stories of sister wives abusing each other, or worse, each other kids. For instance a woman burned the face of her sister wife with a clothing iron, this one stuck with me for some reason. Maybe I should search for some to post in this thread later. Could be gemmy asf.
There's also a correlation between polygamy, violence and even civil wars. It makes sense, all the excess males that get their potential wife taken away by men of higher social status are easily motivated to get their share by raping and pillaging.

I remember a news article about polygamy. They named some african country (nigeria?) as an example why it is a bad idea. Basically every generation a bunch of young adult guys join the militia terrorist groups to get wealth and pussy in raids. Since all the settled, wealthy, men are picking up the young women to add to their harem. When you're a 20 yo guy society doesn't offer you a lot. Protection and safety don't matter, while it restricts your ability to use violence to take what you want. Once a man is married, he suddenly has a wife and children he wants to protect. He needs a safe environment so he can leave for work without having to worry.

If nothing else, monogamy is probably one of the oldest wealth redistribution/wealth accumulation social contracts out there. The king agrees to not hoard all the women, and in return the young men keep their heads down and work hard. Women meanwhile all get their own man rather than having to share.The chinese imperial harem, or the ottoman imperial harem, were basically one big den of vipers. I don't blame them. The most beautiful and smartest women were recruited and locked in the harem. There was nothing to do but win the emperor's favor, and engage in court politics.
