You know what, I'm not sure how unpopular of an opinion this is, but after all this really depressing shit that's been going on, it's frankly kind of nice to see something a little more benign even if it has been done before. That Magi-Chan DM was one of the more entertaining pieces of Chris content I've seen in a hot minute IMO.

Why did Chris-Chan become the definitive name people refer to him by? He always used CWC as his main identifier. It’s either that or “the Sonichu guy” for people less in the know.

I don't know, but if I had to guess I'd say it was started when he went up to Lucas an Mimms and said something and followed it with "I bet you didn't know that about this Chris Chan" when he was trying to figure out who posted his pic on 4chan.
