He had already been getting in trouble in school long before and they coddled him through that. If that incident where they held him down and recorded his screams actually happened it was probably because they felt they had to prove Chris was a freak and they actually had to restrain him.
I always thought, as far as his school, college and work were concerned it was very "out of sight, out of mind" for his parents. If he was at any of those places he didn't have to be home with them so as long as he was there it was better than the alternative, someone else had to put up with him and it ceased to be their problem for a while. I wondered if perhaps Barb was okay with Chris barhopping for this reason. I used to wonder if she thought he'd meet a girl there and wind up moving out but now I doubt she even thought about it that far ahead, it was just 'well, at least he's not here.'

Like you said, if he was in school, at the gameplace etc they didn't have to deal with him. How else can you explain why they never denied him internet access. They had to know what was going on. Jesus trolls sent postcards of the julay video to the chandler house at one point. Bob confiscated Chris's video equipment for a time. But then he went right back to it a few weeks later. Maybe part of that was barbs influence. But i think the reality is the internet, like alot of things was a babysitter for chris. If he was online he wasn't bothering his parents. As many have said, no discipline, no accountability and 0 boundaries likely led to Chris's worse traits.
