Raya and the last dragon - A half decent trailer for most likely a mediocre film that will still get a billion dollars

Just end it

So this Raya movie is quite boggling. This new movie looks like pure Chinese market bait and even looks like it was made in China, right down to stolen designs and weird faces, but the dragon in the film is incompetent and stupid which is a definite no-no for the Chinese standards alongside no ghosts. So why is it okay to have a dumb silly dragon for this movie but not for Mulan?
This movie...apparently doesn't have influence from China, but rather the general Southeastern Asian culture (Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, etc.). I doubt they're sucking Chinese dick with this one.

This is what the dragon looks like, apparently.

Haha, I get it. The animal sidekick is a seadragon, which is a fish and not an actual mythological creature, such as you might expect from a film purportedly set in SEAsia. Very inventive, Disney, and how subversive, too. Your committee should be proud, because this pun is such a creative and whimsical way to play off the "aquatic dragon" theme. I'm sure the audience will appreciate it too, once you spend the last third of the film explaining it to them by means of a contrived identity crisis where Awkwafina finds out that anyone can be a dragon on the inside.

Fucking kill me.

There's some other movie studio making an animated wisecracking dragon movie right now. It's called 'Wish Dragon' or something. It's really weirding me out because the animation somehow manages to look more like Disney than what Disney is doing now.

Regardless of whether or not this will even be a good film (prob won't), I commend them for actually having a pretty cute dragon design.

This thing looks way more plush and cuddly than....this.

What I hate most about current Disney is that the era of compelling character designs is over. Everyone suffers from sameface syndrome with Elsa eyes and toned-down colors. Part of the charm of the Disney renaissance is that the designs of the characters in all the different movies have unique, distinguishable designs to make the style of each movie feel fresh and new. Pocahontas doesn't look like Beauty and the Beast, which doesn't look like Tarzan, which doesn't look like Lion King, etc.
The big red guy is pretty adorable. Reminds me of an asian Pete's Dragon/Elliott. By comparison the one on the bottom now just looks creepy.

Are we ever getting a cartoon with occidental, not Barney-styled, talking, sapient and not catlike dragon, I wonder. It is like magical triangle, only "pick three of five" for most of the part.
There's Spirited Away, but it's an anime, and Haku spends most of his time in human form. He's not a creepy human either.

Haku's dragon design was quite beautiful, even from an animation standpoint as well as a design. Plus his human form is equally appealing and not this weird quirky messy racist caricature they have going on. Disney collabs with Studio Ghibli quite frequently and you think they'd have taken some notes.

Yes, that's why I prefaced it with "anime" ie Asian dragon not western. Because so far there is literally nothing else.

But for real, the character designers should've looked at Haku's normal and dragon forms to get a real idea of what they should be going for with Sisu. He's even a river spirit to boot.
Even Falcor would've been good inspiration, though I admit I thought he was a dog when I was a kid.

His dragon form was actually based on dogs, funny enough.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was somewhat tied into Princess Mononoke, maybe they had some unused reference stuff for facial animation of their divine wolves lying around?

Also, never mind me, best dragon design coming through:

Grisu. The dragon that wants to become a firefighter when he's grown up. Now that's just an adorable design with a funny premise.
