Rory has talent. But it's clear their work has either plateaued or started to regress and I'd pay to be a fly on the wall for a critique session at their school. There's a chance their school work is leaps and jumps better than their for fun work, but the fundamentals are lacking in what they're posting on their tumblr.

The sinker for them is their attitude. The attitude they have is what the industry really doesn't fucking want. You don't want a spoiled brat on your team. You don't want someone who digs in their heels at criticism or crows about how much more amazing they are than other people. Industry would rather have a hundred mediocre artists than one talented egomaniac, because the mediocre kids are going to work hard to improve and the egomaniac is just going to sit there thinking they're better than everyone around them so they don't have to.

While her realistic shit is alright, her cartoony stuff is absolutely horrible and it's sad that the only reason she got into one of the most prestigous art schools in the US is because of money. But maybe I'm just a little salty considering that I have a bunch of friends who are great artists but don't have the funds to get into Calarts.

i like the realistic stuff--well, some of them. the faces are good, the bodies are meh

personally i only see art school as like... good resume content? (i guess one could argue any college is like that) but like, yeah i went to this school. hire me so i can work as some uncredited grunt on this show or movie. i'm expendable but at least i went to a good school!
but really as far as being A SCHOOL and teaching, i don't see the use in art schools. i'm an artist and i honestly feel that anyone could learn how to make good art if they never give up and always try new things and have awareness. something rory doesn't have.

Basically, yes. You can learn nearly anything you need with the internet and hard work. Though it could be argued the college experience of art class critiques or access to some art/animation tools is a benefit.

However, schools like CalArts are mostly just a huge bought foot in the door. It doesn't matter if you're good or not. You paid for important people to notice you, and that's more than poorer people may ever be able to scrape together just by their own efforts.

I subscribed to schoolism. It's wayyyy cheaper than any art school and I learn a lot. Who cares if you never went to art school if your art is great?

Advise your pals to go find an apprenticeship program and volunteer as an artist for community projects. They also should spruce up and create a strong social media pages and website showcasing their work. Companies values industry experience more than anything else nowadays. Art school is mostly valued for "connections" but since companies like Marvel are actively looking for new talent on social media platforms, there is hardly much of a point anymore. I would only recommend art school only if you are already an established industrial artist who want to learn new software and meet up with company recruiters in person. They are better off going to a state college and majoring in marketing/ business and minoring in art.

I know what the problem is with Rory's art she looks at the human body has being a series of symbols and instead of modular pieces that fit together. There are trends I have noticed in her work, in cartooning it's standard to have a templates but that for animation. Still images should have a wide variety to the designs. Having a style is great, but building your art from symbols rather than anatomy limits you. Her symbolism shows in her realistic art. It pretty clear she sees the nose as just being a triangle with holes rather than a series of planes. This transfers over to her cartooning where the only noses she draws are rounded triangle and pointy triangle. The nose is an easy way to add uniqueness to a character design but she drops the ball on this.

I hate to continue with this off-topic tangent, but does the quality of art school/college matter in relation to one's artistic skills? One can go to a mediocre art school and come out with an excellent portfolio, and vice versa.

Rory certainly does have promise based on her portfolio and her being a student of the pretentious prestigious CalArts, but if she doesn't get her shit together, she's gonna end up worse at graduation than when she entered.

Rory falls into 3rd example of art types, pretentious fucks who think they are all hotshit because they can pull lines and make at least somewhat decent art. She'll either have her ego crushed so badly she'll start rethinking her whole existence or in worse case she'll regress even further because of it. That part we have yet to see.

It does and it doesn't. If your portfolio shows you understand the very basics you can sneak in and then it's up to you on whether or not you listen the education you get.

The truth is that the reason people should want to go to a college with a recognizable name is because of the connections it has. Most big schools have a mandatory internship that you have to complete to graduate and they place students within industry thanks to alumni connections. Some of the instructors might also come with an impressive list of credentials in those schools but to be frank, there's no shortage of burnt out Disney animators willing to teach the next generation.

Going to school and having a degree is mostly shorthand for having x number of years experience in the field, since breaking into industry is the hardest part.

If the graduates I know are any indicator SCAD is basically a degree factory in disguise.

Back on topic though - Rory doesn't seem to understand any of this. Getting in to CalArts at their age is nothing to sneeze at and they have a right to be proud, but but it's clear from their figure drawing that they never really learned the basics of real world anatomy and that's why their designs look so deformed. You're supposed to dump everything you know from your brain and start from scratch so you can learn how to do shit right. Rory isn't and is stubbornly clinging to every bit of their design work that doesn't work and trying to jam it into what they're learning.

Art school is basically your way to buy connections. But not all studios require applicants to have degrees (particularly gaming studios) anymore anyway. Rory takes shit a lot for granted seeing how mediocre her schoolwork is. The first year will mostly be learning basics but I don't see her managing the next years where you have to do projects with the possibilty of her teachers turning down her work.

To make use of those connections you don't even need to be such a good artist (CN spawning shitty mediocre pilots these days proves that) but you need to be a decent person who can work well with others. Given Rcd's huge ego, she risks the John K effect.
