Disappearances and murders, sure. I don't recall there being reports of giant spiders and snakes that drew them in.
That whole plotpoint is really stupid when you think about it, but it strangely fits with the atmosphere of the first game, the "haunted mansion" vibe it was going for. It's only now with the other games and the world more established that it looks really weird.
People had reported seeing "dog like monsters" in the area.

One thing I don't really like about the first game is the twist that Wesker was using STARS to test the tyrant and everything was planned.

You got to wonder what the plan for Resident Evil 5 was after RE4's grand success. The early drafts interest me, there was going to be not just a day/night cycle but you would have to hide in the shade during the day for example. The co-op ruined everything to be honest, the awful turret section across savanna would have taken place on foot and the temple section would have been a more puzzle heavy environment but both were cut due to co-op. It really shows the wasted potential in the game, there is nothing but shooting in the final game, along with babysitting your teammate if you're playing solo and that takes out all the nuance the game could have had without a partner. They really should have just focused on a single player campaign with an optional co-op one if they were that invested in it.
Speaking of which, I think the game drops off after the initial village section. Once you kill Irving and go to the caves, that's when the game takes a shit. The entire game should have just been Chris' and Sheva's wild African nigger safari, the atmosphere at the beginning of the game was top notch. Latter half? "Generic" is the only thing that comes to mind, at least Wesker is finally dealt with so the story can be concluded right here if you don't care about the other games.
I think this theme for the loadout screen/shop really summarizes what I think about this game: Really mixed feelings, a lot of "what could have beens" but ultimately the atmosphere and the gameplay keep you engaged even thru the bad parts.

I haven't actually played the Merc mode yet, which I've seen a lot of people praising. I completed it in Resident Evil 4...mobile, yet to do it in the proper PC/Console release. I've also seen that Revelations(1/2) and RE6 have great Merc modes, so I guess I am saving those for a rainy day.

This is why I think there would be a huge opportunity with an RE5 remake if they removed the coop and gave the game two interconnected Chris/Sheva campaigns like RE2 Chris/Claire. The chances of them doing this are pretty low though as they used noting from the RE 3.5 builds.

I picked up the 4 remake for black friday and just got to the castle.

Its crazy how much of this game rushed back to me as I played. It has made it a bit easier since I already knew how to fight all the enemies up to this point, and when the bosses would come in but I am still having fun playing. $30 bucks and it runs well on xbox, a good surprise. Pretty disappointed the title screen didnt say "RESIDENT EVIL" and there was no ballistics line from Luis though.

Agreed. Id prefer something new. Preferably in that timeline after 8 where Chris goes after the BSAA

Ironically 5 would be the most interesting remake though. Just to see if they can pull off something better or worse.
5 will 100% be worse as far as setting and atmosphere since they have to re-make the game for "modern audiences". If the game will just be a carbon copy of REmake 4, which was just a reskin of REmake 3 and 2, then I doubt it will be interesting. This goes double if they force co-op again.

I used to think co op was impossible to do in horror but I think they need to take some cues from lethal company

The funny thing about the Re story is that at first it's a mansion with an underground lab and some of the "unintended casualties" (the zombified workers and researchers as well as zombified dogs) walking through the woods killing wanderers.
Then S.T.A.R.S. gets deployed and most of them die. A few weeks go by suddenly the entire city is infected and NO ONE realized that? The blockading of the city comes later through the Outbreak files but at the time RE2 plays you can simply stroll into the city (like that poor truck driver who gets bitten in a diner) This makes it feel kind of unrealistic but also fun. Or if we take the RE2 Remake. Leon / Claire get attacked at a gas station miles ahead of Racoon city. And nobody around the city has realized how silent the city has become? Is it really way out there in the bumbfuck countryside? Then why is an Umbrella HQ there? So many plotholes

One of the little stupid things of the remake that bothers me is how Claire is basically walking around with a holster and gun even before things go to shit.

I know it's probably because her friend told her to be careful, but it still looks weird.

Best guess? It's bumfuck nowhere so some strange shit going down isn't likely to get noticed by the country at large. After all, where would you build a secret lab for conducting horrifically un-ethical experiments? In a huge busy metropolis where there are millions of eyes all around you or an out of the way podunk nowheres-ville where a missing person or two in the mountains isn't all that unusual.

It's always been confusing to me just how big raccoon city actually is supposed to be. I think in 1 and 2 its suppossed to essentially be smallish town of maybe 30,000-50,000k but RE3 introduces a sprawling downtown and subway. They also have their own SWAT team, yet have no back up during the mansion incident in the first game.

Most of this is rationalized by explaining how the whole Police department is essentially controlled by umbrella, but this is why I dont speculate much on the story of RE or stuff like if Rose will be in another game. This is one of the most shoot from the hip franchises in terms of story that is out there.

Tbf a lot of people in America carry guns in general.

She's also Chris Redfields sister and she's specifically looking for him. He'd probably flip a lid if she showed up to see him without a gun. Alpha dudes like that are very protective of their family.

Alright, but in a viewable holster?
I've been in the US and met people who carried, but the holster was usually concealed under a jacket or clothes.

I can’t speak for myself as I live in a blue area where there’s stricter gun laws, but I’m pretty sure some states allow open carry with the holster visible.
