I am curious about playing the Resident Evil Games. Should I go for the action horror ones or the survival horror?

I checked this comparison on Resident Evil 6 vs. Resident Evil 7, and it looks like the action based sequels look to be more fun than the horror sequels.

From the gameplay that I have seen, Resident Evil 9 looks to have a fair amount of action.

Classic titles (1996-2000)
These are all survival horror focused, and don't have any modern releases as in steam or current gen, most of them do have windows ports.

  • Resident Evil: Director's Cut (get the directors cut, NOT THE DUALSHOCK VERSION!)
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (get the version that has the X at the end, this one does not have a native PC port unfortunately, so emulating is likely your best bet)
Transitory titles (2002-2005)
Going from here all of the games have modern steam releases which I recommend, this is the period where Capcom started experimenting with the series identity and RE4's success establishes the gameplay for most of the titles going forward.

  • Resident Evil 1 Remake
  • Resident Evil Zero (not recommended, unless you use an item box mod)
  • Resident Evil 4
    • Separate Ways
Action titles (2009-2012)
These titles take the series more in the action direction that RE4 experimented with, some may argue about RE5, but RE6 is about as far away from a RE game as you can get.

  • Resident Evil 5
    • Untold Stories
  • Resident Evil 6
Revelations (2011-2015)
A spinoff series, haven't heard much about them honestly besides that they take an episodic approach to their design, and Revelations was released originally on 3DS.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations
  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2
First Person titles (2017-2021)
in the wake of RE6's critical failure, the series went through somewhat of a soft reboot and Capcom went back to the series roots via a new perspective, these games are mostly self contained and while RE7 takes the traditional survival horror approach, RE8 goes with the action horror approach like RE4.

  • Resident Evil 7
    • Banned Footage Vol. 1 & 2
    • Not A Hero
    • End of Zoe
  • Resident Evil Village
    • Shadows of Rose
Remakes and Current titles (2019-now)
I'm grouping RE9 and the modern remakes here as all of them have a similar design philosophy in mind, basically if want some modern & new, this is the place to start.

  • Resident Evil 2 Remake
  • Resident Evil 3 Remake (sort of not recommend, buy on sale, cuts out way too much of the orginal)
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake
    • Separate Ways Remake
  • Resident Evil Requiem
Future/possible remakes rumored in development
  • Resident Evil 1 Remake 2 (yes really)
  • Resident Evil 0 Remake
  • Resident Evil - Code Veronica Remake

I see. I take it that the Chris DLC of Resident Evil 7 is the best part?
I suppose if you're looking for more action oriented gameplay than yes. But End of Zoe also fills that area and, funnily enough, is pretty close the bash 'em ups you said you liked.

Focused shots do in fact increase weapon damage by aprox. 17%

so yeah, the feature isn't there just for show

It's been this way since Evil Within btw, which RE Engine games all kinda borrow the mechanic from.
"Yeah, someone pissed in my mouth, but it was only 3 TIMES, BISH! Post hands, pure aryans love lobotomy arrows and handholding in video games"
crapcom fans are pathetic
The yellow paint is so you don't have to think. It's obnoxious so you can move without thinking and keep constant forward momentum. It's why normies love these games to begin with. You're always cruising along because the game makes it obvious. The problem is in RE4 Remake when the thing went from just the beaten path and item crates to all environmental obstacles, most secret pathways, and other things off the beaten path. The entire point of it is to keep you moving forward subconsiously, which is fun, but in RE4 remake specifically it was carrying you every direction, RE9 actually does it the best since RE2 Remake, where only required areas are marked. Leaving anything optional to be less obvious to the player. The entire point is it's a game to have fun, and schmooving is more fun than sitting still not knowing what to do. It's a game meant to be sold as one might say. Yes subconsciously the game is holding your hand on what you have to do. And only optional shit is hidden away like it should be. But puzzle games that are actually complex like portal aren't as popular as candy crush (with over a billion players) for a reason. Games that are mindless dopamine are more fun and thus will sell more copies.

Hence your complaint that they're slop will never matter. Absolutely, it's slop, it literally has the most retarded shit from anime all over this game and it is memed on by the very people praising it. But so is campbells soup. Is campbells chicken noodle better for you than grandmas homemade noodles made with flour rolled up and cooked while a pot boils chicken bones and all the best herbs and spices? No, it's literally poison even, but Grandmas recipe takes like 24 hours to cook while Campbells microwaves in 2 minutes. This is coming from someone who cooks pastries and pasta fresh just like my grandma taunt me for fun. But most people don't like sophisticated fun. And that's just the sad truth. Everyone wants original, until Scream 1507 comes out. Then we just want the same shit but more. And that's what RE9 is, you get a nice dopamine rush of things you know and the game keeps you moving forward subconsciously. It's also why the detonator section is so boring. Because even though you're constantly schmoving it doesn't feel like you are. And that's why so many games have yellow paint. Because it makes traversal fun. Dying Light has yellow paint everywhere as well. And that game is one of the most fun games to play. Because you're constantly moving. It's something you notice a lot when you turn your brain off. Moving around and fighting is a lot of fun. And that's what these games ultimately learned. Players don't like being stuck doing nothing.

Hence why so many people eat Campbells chicken noodle. Because they can put in in the microwave and leave and come back. With real soup you got to sit there, spinning your spoon, kneading the flour into the right shapes. Sprinkling things in delicately. It's something most people aren't going to enjoy doing. People would rather eat a can of poison than real soup because real soup is slow and doesn't have momentum. Humans are naturally supposed to be on the move. Basically what I'm saying is the games are designed to tell you that going outside for a jog is healthy and you should do it because it's fun and the more you do it the more you will be able to turn your brain off and just enjoy shit. And then instead of complaining the puzzles in a video game are too easy you'll solve actual puzzles and improve your brain. Which, ultimately means enjoying slop makes you smarter. Just, when the slop is an entertainment product and not a can of liquid poison and plastic meat. Swallowing that slop actually makes you dumber.

If you aren't interested in the slower fixed camera games play the remakes. 1 is fixed camera but you can make it super easy with the free movement controls. Then go through remake 2-4, RE5, 6 is.. questionable. then 7 8 9. The originals are still good games and in many ways better than the remakes. But if you want shooty bang bang with horror elements, just do the remake series.

RE6 is the dead space 3 of the series and wouldn't be a good start to RE at all. only play 6 with a friend to suffer with.
Re2 remake and 7 are both solid starts to ease your way into the series. both giving you a tiny taste of what classic RE was, and modern era shit.

I was checking in on the lolcow community of Dead by daylight to see what was happening with them and there's some Resident evil cross over news.

Wesker was one of the strongest killers for a while. The game has major balance issues where only the best killers are playable due to developers constantly buffing the survivors. With Scream 7 just coming out and RE9, you would think the developers would want to make the most of their franchised DLC killers. Well this is DBD so no. Ghostface is one of the worst killers in the game and countered constantly by player perks. Wesker, who was strong.. just took a major nerf bat to the face. So any one wanting to play as Wesker in a multiplayer game or buy the RE DLC just lost a reason to do so.

Here is a video on how bad Dead by daylight is. It will help you understand why nerfing Wesker means he's basically unplayable. If you're not top tier, you're not good enough even in casual play. And even by the devs own metrics the best performing killers are closer to 50% kills per game rather than the intended 60% (which they consider to be a fair balance due to the 4 v 1 nature).

Are the OG Resident Evil 2-5 bad? They look to be the free movement games. Also, from what I have seen Resident Evil 6 looks actually like fun gameplay, but the story is long.

I have to confess that I played a bit of Resident Evil 7 in a friend's house and didn't fully enjoy the gameplay. On the other hand, the bash em up games like Dead Rising were more fun. It seems that RE4-6 (both original and remake of 4) are closer to the fun action genre.

I guess I will have to endure Resident Evil 7 if I have to finish the RE series. The DLCs look more fun.

no, they are just old as fuck, 2 is arguably way more important to the genre than 1 was beyond its groundbreaking nature, and way more horror/body horror than 1, its just a slow ass tank control game that, despite what people with nostaliga goggles think, is piss easy, you get more ammo than you know what to do with in 2, but as a kid shit like Lickers and all the G-mutants were terrifying.
3 is an incredibly solid game, Code Veronica is about as solid as 3, but way longer, and I'd say its the toughest of the tank control games.
4 is one of the best video games ever made.
5 is a step down but its co-op baby, if you have a friend it was fun.

Only if you insist that Chris and Piers need a makeout scene in the remake.
I dunno, I feel like if RE6 is/was supposed to be the big "everyone's here" globe trotting moment in the series at that point, they really need to lean into that more.

I know not reusing character when they should or having every character besides protags be one-offs is part and parcel for the games, but it'd be nice to like, actually see how this big worldwide terrorist attack would affect the characters.

No. I think RE6 is the only bad mainline RE. Why not get the emulator out and try them all?
Am I gay for wanting them to remake 6?
If they cut content it might improve that one..

The animated movies do that.

No its the base game.

RE6 is amazing don't listen to this nonsense.
Amazing? Funny, it was the best selling game in the franchise, but the feedback was so bad they rebooted the entire series.

Doesn't seem very amazing when you consider that does it?
