Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Are there any good HDMI adapters for the Wii that don't introduce input lag?
...
that's a good question
I hooked some in-laws up with a wii recently and then we had to take a trip to the nerd store to get shit to hook it up to an HD tv that can't do rca jacks

I'll be hanging out with them in a week or few, I'll try to remember to check back if the crap we got actually works

Agreed. I'd like checkpoints and to fix the physics on the Chicargo jump. So many times I replayed that mission just for the jump physics to crap out, requiring a chapter restart. I want to say there was an optional bike jump in greece that would crap out as well.

I'd also like a way to increase the movement speed when you have those rare cases you're left without a car in the middle of nowhere.

I remember the fog being a pain on some levels as well, but I don't remember if that was a technical limitation.

Never heard of this. Will definitely have to give it a look.

Thinking of other decompilations. Episode 1 Pod Racing, Shadows of the Empire, Top Gear Rally, and Beetle Adventure Racing could be interesting ones. Resident Evil 2 never emulates right and had some exclusive features other ports didn't, but might not be worth the trouble for what amounts to some custom outfits and a randomiser.
Shadow if the Empire was on PC as well. It's even on steam right now.

It's incredibly stupid how those niggers at Namco set up Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
In short, if you want to unlock the extra characters, just limit yourself at the 01.01 update. Going any further (01.03) will lock the dlc characters again. Why? Fuck knows, and fuck you for playing the best tekken game.
While it's not a problem on real hardware, on rpcs3 it becomes annoying very quickly.
And don't bother with the version from NoPayStation, those simply won't work, you need to track down a CD Image, not the downloaded image.
Of course, the game is only on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.

Loving Abiotic Factor. It's the best SCP game we never got.

The only thing I don't like is the grinding you're expected to do for materials, the character maintenance with food drink and sleep, and some of the difficulty spikes early on. It's clearly designed with co-op play in mind.

That said, coming across the anomalies is fun. There's even a fun jab at the recent yellow paint discourse by having that be one of the SCPs (or IS as they're called in game). What's great is that most of these anomalies come from other dimensions, and better yet, you have to visit some of said dimensions. They also (so far) hit a sweet spot between over explaining things, while keeping them vague enough to keep some mystery.

Some of the scenes are well done too. Entering an area covered in posters saying "If you see it, report it!", and then you see it. Great stuff.

Pod Racing was on PC and was a decent game and looked better than the N64 version, even back then. There are some patches to make it run better though TBH I haven't messed around with them.
Shadow if the Empire was on PC as well. It's even on steam right now.
I had no idea these were a thing. Are they the same game, or is it like Indiana Jones where it was a similar game with the same name?

Related, loving the hell out of the Perfect Dark PC port. One surprise is that mouse and keyboard doesn't immediately trivialise the game as I thought it would. It's easier, sure, but I'm not curb stomping everything.

Noob question, but are there any good NDS emulators worth while for us PC slaves?
have you tried MelonDS? Seems to be the preffered choice over DeSmuME these days
Better yet, get MelonDSDS.
This has been around for a few months now, but it was recently added to RetroBat so I just switched to it. RetroArch has a new DS core called MelonDS DS, meant to be a more up to date MelonDS core that includes recent features from standalone plus some new quality of life additions that aren’t even in standalone. In addition to just running better than the normal MelonDS core, here are some of the highlights:
  • You can load DSiWare directly instead of having to swap between DSi NAND files that each have a few games installed
  • You can swap between screen layouts with a button press, and there’s a “turn the system sideways” layout for games like Rhythm Heaven
  • Microphone support
  • Nintendo Wi-Fi unofficial server support, almost fully preconfigured (you just have to go into your DS’s wifi settings and add an Internet connection created by the emulator)
  • I think there’s also software-based upscaling in addition to the old OpenGL option
  • The “an error has occurred” message when starting some rom hacks in DSi mode has been fixed as a far as I can tell

After playing the FF7 Nes demake and the Zelda Ancient Dungeon romhack, are there any really good romhacks or modern games made for older now defunct systems?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but nintendo nuked their games from our beloved vimm.net. Over 700 games.

I've seen rumors that it was a false flag dmca, but these are so far unsubstantiated.

For fuck’s sake, that was the best site for getting standalone roms.
But GameCube and Wii aside, you really have no excuse for not having full romsets of all pre-3DS cartridge systems for easy access. Those things are tiny.

At this point I probably should try to find some of those packs and see if I can burn those collections to a blank DVD as a back up

Sucks. Finding a complete set of UK roms has been tricky for me. Either they are bloated with shit like spanish/french/us/etc versions. Or they are missing key games (so many NES collections I've seen don't have Guardian Legend.)

I can't rate their quality personally. There's a few.

Xeno Crisis on Megadrive is a Smash TV style game.

There's a bunch of GameBoy games due to GBStudio. There's a YouTube channel called RetroBreak that goes into them. His Homebrew and Rom Hacks playlists might be of use.

SNESDrunk also has some romhack reviews.

I never bothered with any of them. Some are highly regarded though.

There is a series of YouTube videos by Kaze N64 that detail his Mario romhack. What's fascinating about these videos is that he goes in and makes fixes and code optimizations to make Mario 64 run way better on actual hardware.

Yeah, the full sets for the old consoles dont take up much space at all. I dont keep any full sets myself, I just have a highly curated collection of roms I've built since, no joke, the late 2000s. The zsnes days lol. Well over a 1000 games for various systems that are tailored to my very specific gaming tastes. So I undoubtedly have the all of the games I would personally enjoy from those 700 that the japs hit in their kamikaze attack.

But its still very frustrating that this happened. It's no doubt due to the Delta emulator on iPhone. That thing got downloaded over a million times in a very short span. Most of those newfags were using Vimm's site. It bears mentioning that no non-nintendo games were hit. Sega Chads win this one, I suppose.

I agree that a curated set is the way to go. But it’s also nice being able to pull from a downloaded fullset when you want to add something new instead of having to reach out to a rom site every time. Make your own rom site, basically.

I didn’t consider Delta, but that’s probably a good reason, especially since modern pirates have no sense of subtlety and were probably shouting at each other “HEY, VIMM HAS FREE SHIT!”. Between everything else Nintendo’s been doing though, it could also simply be them getting all the assholery out of their system “stabilizing financial weak points caused by piracy” before the Switch 2 is revealed and everyone goes full hype train.

Been playing the Perfect Dark PC port, and stuck on the 20s challenges. The single player has also been frustrating. There are a couple of reasons for this and I wonder if this has to do with the 60fps port, or the port requiring the ntsc rom instead of PAL.

First, there's some strange changes, like how enemies spam grenades. I'm willing to chalk this up to me forgetting, but only allowed to have 4 sims instead of 8 is definitely a change. I remember the PAL version allowed 8 because me and a friend would play 2 v 8 easy sims capture the case.

The challenges are basically impossible. The bots on 1 hit kill changes instant kill you the frame they have line of sight. Deathmatch based challenges have to be done perfectly because getting killed respawns you right next to the bots.

As for the campaign. Babysitting the AI was always a problem in PD, but I don't remember them breaking so much. Things like the cleaning bot getting stuck spinning on the spot, or Janathon shooting at the endlessly respawning guards instead of moving were softlocks. In Area 51, the guards carry grenades that are needed to destroy turrets and the mine field, but they throw them at you pretty much immediately, so rushing them down at the cost of taking damage is all but required. Speaking of which, the explosive crate used to destroy the warehouse wall vanished when I wasn't looking at it. Good thing there's an exploit where any explosive will work, but again I don't remember PD being this buggy.

It might actually be a patent troll
Wouldn't surprise me if it was. These kinds of take-downs happen all the time on Youtube where someone pretends to be a legit company just to fuck with people only for the actual company to come out and go "no we haven't done that".

And when it comes to Nintendo there are some stonch fans that will go to bat for Nintendo when it comes to piracy and act like that tattle-tale in school that everyone wants to beat up.

What, no :(
I have a lot of them archived but not all of them unfortunately. Vimm was my last refuge after emuparadise died. I dont want to depend on reddits gay ass archive.org collection. I also saw that they removed the translated Berserk Millennium Falcon PS2 game from their archive, I had to get that from CDRomance.

Ive been playing Links awakening and couple of SNES rpgs. The world exploration is a bit tedious because you have to fetch quest a lot and swapping items using pause is painful but the exploration still feels organic and fun which is surprising for a 30 year old game. I guess part of it is forcing you to pay attention to the map cause optimizing navigation and finding shortcuts feels fun, similar to the first half of dark souls.
