Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Been watching a lot of old Cinematechs recently since they get the nostalgia really going for me.

Neat, a Vectrex, that's a cool system, don't see the box anywhere though. Like a lot of old systems and games having the box really drives up the price.

You can tell people about the screen and they think they get it, but unless you see it you don't get it.
My cousins had this, they got it in a yardsale or something with a bag of games.

I remember playing it back in the 1990s when I came to visit.

Most if not all games had this plastic screen overlay that you were supposed to put in front of the screen to give it 'color'

It also had a build in game

Anyone else here go through old demo discs? Went through Playstation Underground's E3 2001 disc and really enjoyed it.
Oh shit

ps2 jampack summer 01.jpg

I actually had this one before I had any PS2 games. Shit, I'm sure if I try it now the nostalgia will hit me like a fucking freight train.

I kinda miss demo compilations now, it was a great way to get me to try games I'd only otherwise overlook. Downloading demos just isn't the same, since you don't just get a bunch of random games thrown at you that you can try right now. I know they had a stigma, like "lmao who would PAY for DEMOS?!?!?!?!", even back before you could download them, but fuck it, I'd pay five bucks for a disc full of random playable demos. It's a curated sampler collection I can just pop in my system. It's nice to have something that pushes me to try games I'd never otherwise consider.

(I didn't actually end up buying any of the games on that Summer '01 disc, though I had a lot of fun with Red Faction, ICO, and MX 2002's demos)

The Turbo Grafx-16 mini, Core Grafx Mini, and PC Engine Mini really became coveted collectors items less than a month after release.

Like holy shit the average going rate is 200 bucks for any of them. And here I was wanting a Core Grafx mini just because I have this really cool small CRTV(that was part of an old video editing setup) that it could have aesthetically matched with.

I thought nobody gave that much of a shit about the PC Engine shit in America and Europe.

The PC Engine/TG 16 was never in demand until ten years ago when people start to discover the library and demand for the library shot through the roof. Up till the late 2000s you could order NOS games and systems from Turbo Direct before it was liquidated. Best bet is to get a japanese Duo with a everdrive or a basic unit with Super SD System 3 if you want to experience the system without investing in games.

I had a great time replaying demos over and over, there was quite nothing like getting a free demo disc with your game or in your mcdonalds bag, knowing you'd never buy the full game.

For those who have a current obsession with PS1 games but want more than the ps1 classic and something more reliable than the PS1 system itself, i'd recommend looking into jail breaking a PSP and downloading your PS1 favorites. PSPs go for fairly cheap and PS1 files work really well with the controls, plus its small and portable.
I forgot how hard parappa the rappa goes.

I wanna hack my 3DS so I can play DS roms. Can anyone confirm how well the instructions on this site work?

My firmware is Ver. 11.10.0-43U.

It had buzz for the serious game nerds, so I can see how it would translate to the Tiny Emubox crowd

Been a hot minute since I did mine but yes that's the best guide out there.

After you finish that guide look up robz twilight menu.

I hope it leads to more physical releases of shit. I'd really like a release of the original Ys 3:Wanderers and Ys 4: DOTS. I think the TG16 Mini includes all the best of RPGs for the system. Not a whole lot of worthwhile ones are missing that I can think of.

The fact that Konami OK'd Snatcher(at least in some form) makes me hope we get a comprehensive re-release. Preferably I'd love to switch between versions since the Sega CD one is different from the other releases.

Makes me wonder if they'll bother finishing Policenauts translation if a company like Sega asks for the rights to make a Saturn mini or something.

>oh boy gonna play some old vidya
>found my MGS2 Substersiveistance, PS2 slim flip top, controller, memory card, Document Of Metal Gear Solid, and... fuck where's the cords
>oh hey here's the PSP-to-TV cord wait I flipped that thing for an easy pirate PSP years ago and my toaster can emulate PSP

yeah fuck things that aren't already running on my computer, imma go play arkanoid for a while
at the moment I have a DC VGA box and a DC Controller trying to form their own voltron as sort of a race between the two. That only needs to find my DC and some games because the DC has that easy normal power cord, but I got bored looking, maybe I'll dig around more later.
I'm pretty sure a long time back I made sure my TV can handle ancient DC vga output

You'll also want to look into this too, it's made my life a million times easier.

There's a patch/repackager for DS games that might be worth looking into as well. My save games in Order of Ecclesia never survived a reboot until I repacked the ROM, another game just hung the system with a black screen until I repackaged that one as well. Can't remember what it is called though.

Update if anyone gives a fuck. I have a new beefier PC now, I've been meaning to get to Demons Souls via emulation. You cannot play it via mouse and keyboard like I prefer to play my Souls games. I thought I had an Xbox One controller but did not. So I ordered a new one and I'll hopefully get to it by next Thursday.

Also, I tried the Cinders mod on Dark Souls 3 but I have a pirated copy and it did not work. So, I now have a reason to purchase Souls 3 because Cinders looks awesome but I will wait for a sale.

I decided to play around with this today on my Thinkpad x230 with an i5-3320M. Holy shit, I can't believe how far people have been able to take Dolphin. Like how the fuck can this dinky laptop run Resident Evil 4 and hold it steady at 30fps?

Meanwhile those asshats at PCSX2 can't even make a default GUI that doesn't look like shit.

The internal hardware of the Gamecube/Wii (the latter is effectively a souped up version of the former) is surprisingly weak. It's a testament to how well it was designed it produced games as high quality as both systems did when both are in many ways laughably inferior to their equivalent competitors.

Also, the PS2 is a weird beast that even Sony themselves have trouble emulating perfectly, early PS3 models had to include all the original PS2 internals for perfect backwards compatibility.

The new memories of Celceta PS4 release includes a shitload of music from Ys 5 on the pack-in CD that comes with it.

But Ys5 still doesn't have a US release in any form. Supposedly Konami may be partially to blame because they published Ys 6 and a few of the earlier games in the series and 5 may be tangled up in that.

It's kind of the reason why 6 has not gotten a widespread revamp,

I'll be happy if I can get it to run Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door. It just instacrashes Dolphin for me. (:_(
